2 Welcome address from Dean Dr Padraig Sheeran MB ChB, FFA RCSI, FRCS Ed., FFSEM, DTM&H, FJFICMI Consultant Anaesthetist - Our Lady s Children Hospital, Crumlin Dean of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, RCPI & RCSI Dear Delegates, Following on from our very successful SEMSEP 2015/2016 programme, on behalf of the Faculty Board, I would like to welcome you to RCSI today for the second module in our Sports and Exercise Medicine Structured Educational Programme (SEMSEP) 2016/2017. The objective of the SEMSEP programme is to provide additional educational opportunities in the new specialty of Sports and Exercise Medicine to our Fellows and Members, but also to medical practitioners and other allied healthcare professionals who are interested to learn more about Sports and Exercise Medicine. The modules will be delivered during the academic year, and will address a number of topics. Our first module this year was dedicated to In Practice Olympic Games Update, and was well attended. We hope that today s module, In Practice Concussion Update, as well as the next two modules later on in the programme, In Practice Nutrition for Sports & Health/Anti-Doping Update & In Practice Managing Chronic Illness in Sport, will be as popular. On behalf of the Faculty Board, I would like to welcome you to RCSI this morning for SEMSEP Module 2 on In Practice Concussion Update. This is our second SEMSEP Module on this in light of ongoing developments in the research and knowledge on Concussion, and in particular the recent 5th International Consensus Meeting on Concussion in Berlin which will deliver it s findings in May 2017 with an updated Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport, to follow on from the 4th Zurich statement. In the pre-hospital, pitch-side environment, it is the doctor who is ultimately held responsible for decisions made regarding player welfare. One of the areas of acute concern is Concussion in the Paediatric Patient/ Athlete. The faculty will set up an expert group of Paediatricians to examine Concussion in the Developing brain closely - this will involve a self funded trip to our recent Honorary Fellows Facility in Childrens Boston, Dr Lyle Michaeli. This morning s programme has been created to update you as to our current knowledge on concussion which is still an evolving science, add clarity where needed, and highlight what is important so that the doctors on the field of play can make the right decision with the best interests of the player being his absolute priority. This is the role of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine; to provide the education, training and support for our sports doctors in the challenging environment of competitive sport. I hope today s SEMSEP answers more questions than it creates. We look forward to the various modules being delivered by our team of SEM experts and guest speakers, and we value your feedback after each module. Dr Padraig Sheeran Dean of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, RCPI & RCSI
