8 Speaker biographies David Charles Linehan M.D., F.A.C.S. David C. Linehan, M.D. is the Seymour I. Schwartz Professor and Chairman of Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College and his MD from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Linehan did his surgical training at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, at Harvard Medical School and completed a Research Fellowship in the Laboratory of Biologic Cancer Therapy at Brigham and Women s Hospital under the mentorship of Dr. Timothy Eberlein. After completing his General Surgery training Dr. Linehan served as the Kristin Ann Carr Fellow in Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He joined the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine in 1999 and was Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Section of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic and Gastrointestinal Surgery. Dr. Linehan s clinical expertise is in the multi-modality treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies. He served as the Director of the nationally acclaimed HPB Surgery Fellowship Training Program and is a dedicated teacher to residents in the operating room and in the research laboratory. He is a past recipient of the Evarts A. Graham Teaching Award, an honor bestowed by the surgical residents in appreciation for excellence and dedication to teaching. Dr. Linehan is the author of many basic science and clinical manuscripts and he directs an NIH-funded laboratory whose focus is on the tumor microenvironment and the cell-mediated immune response to pancreas cancer. In addition, Dr. Linehan is an active translational researcher, serving as Principal Investigator on several, ongoing multi-modality clinical trials. 6
9 Professor Michael Goggins Dr. Goggins is a Professor of Pathology, Medicine and Oncology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was born in New York City and moved to the West of Ireland as a teenager. He received his Bachelor s degree and medical degree from Trinity College Dublin in 1988 and completed his internship and internal medicine training ( ) and gastroenterology and internal medicine fellowship training (1991-5) in St. James Hospital, Dublin. He was a lecturer in Clinical Medicine at Trinity from He then completed a research fellowship in Pathology and a clinical fellowship in gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins University and joined the faculty in He was promoted to Professor of Pathology, Medicine and Oncology in He has directed the Pancreatic Cancer Early Detection Research Laboratory since He is also an Attending Physician at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the Department of Medicine, the Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology and member of the Division of Gastrointestinal Pathology and the Oncology Cancer. Dr. Goggins has written or co-authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications. He was recognized a few years ago by Essential Science Indicators as the 6th-most highly cited pancreatic cancer scientist over the previous decade. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Sol Goldman Pancreatic Cancer Research Center at Johns Hopkins University. He has served on numerous national advisory committees on pancreatic cancer. He has been a National Institute of Health grant reviewer for over 10 years and serves on the NCI Cancer Oncology Trials and Specialized Programs in Research Excellence (SPORE) study sections. He is a member of the GISPORE, and the PACGENE and Panc4 consortia. The goals of these studies include to identify new genes and markers of pancreatic cancer susceptibility and diagnosis. As a member of the pancreatic cancer research team at Johns Hopkins University, he was awarded the 2012 AACR Team Science award. He is PI of a Research Acceleration Award from the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to fund a multicenter study (Cancer of the Pancreas Screening-5, CAPS5). His early detection research focuses on evaluating the potential clinical utility of measuring markers of early pancreatic cancer in pancreatic fluids and blood. The ongoing CAPS5 study is measuring mutations in the pancreatic fluid of patients undergoing pancreatic screening using next-generation sequencing. 7
10 Speaker biographies continued Professor Richard Schulick Richard D. Schulick, MD, MBA, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He also holds the Aragon/Gonzalez- Giusti Chair in Surgery. Schulick came from the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions where he was Chief of the Surgical Oncology Division. He is, currently, in charge of the Department of Surgery which has seven clinical divisions (Cardiothoracic; GI, Tumor and Endocrine; Pediatric; Plastic; Transplant; Urology; and Vascular) with 155 full-time faculty / 39 research faculty / 73 part-time faculty / 123 residents and fellows / and 68 staff. He oversees multiple lines of research with successful National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, private foundation, industry, and internal support. In 2014, the University of Colorado School of Medicine Department of Surgery was ranked 19th out 141 medical school departments in terms of National Institutes of Health funding ($6.1 million). As the son of a U.S. diplomat, Schulick grew up around Washington, DC, and in Burma, Thailand, and India. He received his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering in 1985, medical school degree in 1989, and master in business education in 2010, all from Johns Hopkins University, and completed a residency in General Surgery there in He completed fellowships in clinical pharmacology and immunology at the National Institutes of Health both in 1993, advanced gastrointestinal surgery at Johns Hopkins in 1997, and surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Schulick, who was on the Johns Hopkins faculty for 13 years, before coming to Colorado, is a recognized leader in the fields of pancreatic, hepatic, and biliary surgery, as well as other areas in cancer surgery. His scientific interests are in the area of tumor immunology. He has held numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health to study vaccine therapy of cancer. He has pioneered the use of genetically engineered bacteria as well as genetic modifications of cancer cells to treat human cancer. He has also received recognition as a highly effective educator. 8 Schulick serves on the editorial boards of several journals in the field of surgery. He has authored or co-authored more than 270 peer reviewed scientific papers, invited manuscripts, and book chapters. He has obtained funding from both corporate and government agencies, including K23 and R01 funding, and has served on study sections of the National Institutes of Health. Schulick is a member of various organizations including the American Surgical Association, Society of Clinical Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, Americas Hepato-pancreato-biliary Association, Halsted Society, Western Surgical Association, Southern Surgical Association and James IV Association of Surgeons.
11 Professor Kenneth Fearon MBChB(Hons), MD, FRCS (GLAS) Professor Fearon obtained his medical degree from the University of Glasgow, UK in He was the CRC Clinical Research Fellow in Medical Oncology at Glasgow University between and was awarded his MD Thesis entitled Mechanisms and Treatment of Cancer Cachexia in He obtained his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians in He then joined the Department of Surgery, Edinburgh University, UK and was appointed Honorary Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in 1993 and Professor of Surgical Oncology in Professor Fearon is an expert in cancer cachexia. His research interests include human nutrition and metabolism, nutritional pharmacology, mechanisms of cancer cachexia, and novel treatments for cancer cachexia. Several translational studies have been conducted by his group to examine the relationship between inflammation and cancer cachexia. His research also focuses on development of early biomarkers (genome, transcriptome and proteome) and novel outcome measures. Professor Fearon has led several prospective, randomized intervention trials in cancer cachexia. Professor Fearon has published more than 200 original articles and more than 60 chapters and reviews. He has received awards from the Nutrition Society, SCWD and ESPEN for his work on cancer cachexia. 9
12 Speaker biographies continued Dr Christine O. Menias Dr Christine O. Menias is a Professor of Radiology in the Abdominal Radiology section at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Arizona, USA. She joined Mayo in 2013 and has been a Senior Associate Consultant in the Department of Radiology since that time. Prior to this she was Professor of Radiology at Washington University, and director of Body CT and Emergency Radiology, in addition to being the assistant program director of the radiology residency at Washington University Born in Cairo, Egypt, she received her M.D. degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. She completed her Residency and Abdominal Imaging Fellowship at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Cooky who was on the Washington University faculty for 15 years, before coming to Mayo Clinic is a recognized leader in the field of Abdominal Imaging, with special interests in oncologic, transplant, gynecologic and emergency radiology. Cooky is nationally recognized for her service and contributions to the field of abdominal radiology and Oncologic imaging, and is an active member in many prestigious radiology societies including the Radiological Society of North America, American Roentgen Ray Society, American Society of Emergency Radiology and the Society of Abdominal Radiology. She is considered an expert in the field of abdominal imaging and oncology; invited many years as faculty to many national and international prestigious radiology conferences. She serves on the editorial boards of several journals in Radiology and is an Associate Editor of the Abdominal Imaging Journal and for Radiographics. Dr Menias is a Diplomate in Radiology for the National Board of Medical Examiners, and has been an oral board examiner since She has published 4 books, multiple book chapters and over 130 peer-reviewed manuscripts. She prides herself with being an educator, and has received numerous teaching awards from the residents and fellows in her past years at Washington University including multiple Teacher of the Year honors, and was awarded Educator of the Year by the Department of Radiology at Mayo Clinic in the two years she s been at Mayo. 10
