1 WICORMEDIA Number 6 February 2017 Don t forget to follow school life via twitter (@minihorts) or our blogs; Wicor Grounds, Old Joe s Blog, Buzzin and Cluckin, Wicor Poets and Wicor s World All of these can be accessed via our website wwwwicorhantsschuk A single crocus blossom ought to be enough to convince our heart that springtime, no matter how predictable, is somehow a gift, gratuitous, gratis, a grace David Steindl-Rast Dear All Sometimes things just catch your eye The crocuses opposite caught mine as I took a short stroll in the orchard one lunchtime It s not that I have never seen crocuses before but something just struck me about their beauty; a perfect beacon of light, hope and colour amid the dark, curling decaying leaves of a passing winter I love this time of year when nature starts to bring out its spring collection; same as last year but timeless and tireless Our orchard in particular is starting to show spring; our native bulbs are poking through, their leaves collecting as much sunlight as possible to fuel the burst of energy that is to be their flower After what I feel have been a grotty few months, it s heartening to see the signs of spring coming to the fore Crocuses in Wicor s orchard Congratulations to Sophia Brewer in 5C on winning the Wicographer of the Year 2017 completion, with this stunning photo of a toad Sophia cleverly changed the hue which has given the toad an almost bronzelike effect A fabulous effort and welldeserved winner Well done to all of the entries; they were a delight to look at The Magic Toad in my Garden

2 From our own correspondents Myla Darwin (2K) proudly showed me her karate medal Great demo of moves and asked if I would like to hear her count to ten in Japanese Needless to say I said yes and was treated to a display of not only Japanese counting but accompanied by actions Great stuff And to cap it all I got a bow (no not bow but bow!) I always feel a tad nostalgic when I see fossils claimed from the cliffs of Lyme Regis It evokes memories of fossil hunting with my own children Isabelle Barr 3M proudly showed me an ammonite she had knocked out of a cliff in Lyme Regis I asked Isabelle if she had heard of Mary Anning and she had, which I find heartening and inspiring I never quite know what s coming round the corner as is the case with Enzo Draper in 3M Enzo told me he had been looking through some CDs and found some vinyl I ve chosen to show you this as it s one of my favourites I could not help bursting into song as he showed me I m in the Mood for Dancing by The Nolans Ah, those were the days Whoops almost went into the Mary Hopkins number (bet that s lost most of you now) I had to laugh at Enzo s parting comment Mr Wildman, when you were young you must have found lots to do outside because you didn t have much inside True, but we were good at using what we did have! Enzo returned a few days later to continue my education about ice hockey He clearly has a passion for the sport and shared data about his favourite team and the various teams competing in the two American leagues It s a good thing to develop a level of knowledge about a subject beyond that of most people Makes you feel good

3 Dear Mr Wildman, Molly Slee wanted to share with you that she had her first ever hair cut in January, a couple of weeks before her 7th birthday! She had a massive 10 inches cut off, which she was able to donate to the Little Princess Trust It will be used to make real hair wigs for children that have lost their hair due to medical treatment We are very proud of her I think you will agree she looks very different! I have to agree Molly your haircut has given you a very different look Wish it would work for me! Well done on your initiative here; a great way to raise funds and I am sure the money raised will be very much appreciated Well done to Casey Callear (5C) on her recent success at the Portsmouth Music Festival Casey tells me she plays the saxophone (how did I miss that?!) and was the first person to play at the festival nerve-wracking She then played another piece towards the end Casey tells me she hasn t been playing for long and was up against Grade 7 and 8 performers, which I imagine was really good experience You can see from the photo, Casey gained a cup the Sunburst Trophy and the Winifred Woodwind Shield for her efforts A good day at the office as we say!

4 Sports Desk The hand proudly displaying these gymnastics medals belongs to Emma Pratley in 5C Emma recently gained a bronze medal in the floor competition and overall silver on the day The person proudly clutching this medal is Tilly Dance in 2M Tilly earned this medal at a recent gymnastics competition Dear Mr Wildman I have got exciting news On Friday 24th February I competed in my first swimming competition - the Portsmouth Northsea Novice Club Championships I swam in eight events and at the end I was awarded a bronze medal for the 25 metre backstroke, silver for the 50 metre breaststroke and GOLD for 50 metre backstroke!!! It was lots of fun and I can't wait for my next competition The next day I took part in a fun gala Our club competed in a variety of different races against seven other swimming clubs My team came fourth place and I received a green ribbon award It was an amazing experience From Jasmine Cotton 6NA Not content with snowboarding and ice skating Eliza Collins from 5C has embarked on skiing lessons at La Plagne in the French Alps Having gained proper instruction at Chrismas Eliza has already made progress and she tells me she can ski backwards on one leg

5 Quirky quips It s lovely seeing Year R getting in on #showthelove They have created a fabulous wild heart in the fairy area We also produced a whole school heart, using the camera obscura to try to photograph it This was an ambitious plan and the results were pretty good Next time a drone would be useful Anyone got a drone?
