1 Columbus State Community College Construction Sciences & Engineering Technologies Department Landscape Design & Management Program COURSE: LAND 2590 Landscape Operations CREDITS: 3 CLASS HOURS PER WEEK: 6 (1.5 Lecture & 4.5 Lab) PREREQUISITES: BMGT 1111 & LAND 2160 COREQUISITE: LAND 2560 DESCRIPTION OF COURSE This is a comprehensive course for the landscape program and students will receive an overview of the business principles for a landscape contractor. Students will work on projects simulating the operations of a landscape business. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Identify basic landscape business principles, operations, and estimating procedures. Prepare project schedules for mobilization, equipment allocation and material acquisitions. Prepare quantity take-off proposals, with job costs, pricing and overhead recovery. Prepare estimates for landscape design services, installations, and maintenance proposals. Present both in written and oral form a bid package presentation. Utilize sales presentation techniques to present, sell, and install a landscape design and maintenance project. Prepare an employee handbook including business forms and operations procedures. These will include, but are not limited to: Lecture, Power Point presentations, Studio Exercises and Presentations (both individual and group), Classroom Discussion, and Blackboard. ASSESSMENT Columbus State Community College is committed to assessment (measurement) of student achievement of academic outcomes. This process addresses the issues of what you need to learn in your program of study and if you are learning what you need to learn. The assessment program at Columbus State has four specific and interrelated purposes: (1) to improve student academic achievements; (2) to improve teaching strategies; (3) to document successes and identify opportunities for program improvement; (4) to provide evidence for institutional effectiveness. In class you are assessed and graded on your achievement of the outcomes for this course. You may also be required to participate in broader assessment activities.

3 STANDARDS AND METHODS FOR EVALUATION Assessment for LAND 2590 will be based on the following: EXERCISES & PROJECTS PERCENT Class Exercises & Assignment Submissions 30% Class Safety Presentation 05% Class Group Projects 15% Employee Handbook Project 10% Final Group Sales Project 10% QUIZZES & TESTS Quizzes 05% Mid-Term 05% End-Term 10% INSTRUCTOR'S EVALUATION Attendance & Classroom Policies 05% Class Group Discussions & Participation 05% TOTAL 100% LATE WORK All assignments are due in their entirety at the times designated by the instructor. No work will receive credit for partial completeness. Assignments are either submitted at the designated time due or they are counted as being late. The instructor will stamp the assignments with the turn in date on all documents. Any work submitted late, but within a 24- hour grace period will automatically receive a 10% reduction of points for the project. Work submitted within the 48-hour grace period will receive a 20% reduction of points. Any work submitted within the 72-hour grace period will receive a 30% reduction of points. (Includes Weekends and Holidays) Any assignment submitted after the 72-hour grace period will receive "0 points" for that project. Should unforeseen circumstances prevent a student from 1) completing a project on time, or 2) taking an examination, the student should contact the instructor at their earliest possible convenience prior to the due date or examination date. Quizzes and group projects will not be made-up or given at a later date. 4 INCOMPLETE (I) - When circumstances beyond the control of a student or an instructor prevent the completion of course requirements during a Semester, an "I" (incomplete) may be recorded. The incomplete work must be completed within six weeks after the beginning of the next semester; otherwise a final grade of "E" is automatically recorded. WITHDRAWAL (W) - Withdrawals through the th calendar day of the semester are not recorded on the permanent grade transcript. Withdrawals after the th calendar day of the semester through the th calendar day of the semester are recorded as "W" on permanent grade transcripts. Failure on the part of a student to follow withdrawal procedure will result in an "E" (failing grade) being recorded for the course or courses on the grade report. th (Monday) is the last day to withdraw from classes for Autumn Semester COURSE DROP / WITHDRAWAL PROCEDURE Each individual student is responsible for his or her course schedule. Dropping and adding courses must comply with college deadlines. Instructors/Advisors will not drop and add courses for you. In the event that you feel that it is necessary to drop a course, please inform the instructor of that decision. The problems or circumstances leading to the student s withdrawal perhaps can be addressed by the instructor and resolved without course withdrawal. To withdraw from a class, it is necessary for the student to notify the College by submitting a completed Schedule Adjustment Form to the Records and Registration Office; call telephone registration, (614) , during business hours; use CATS (Computer Automated Touch tone System) registration at (614) or use SITE (Student Information Terminal) system. Receipt of the revised schedule, either in person or by mail, is the student s verification of registration transactions. Failure on the part of a student to follow withdraw procedures will result in an E (failing grade) being recorded for the course(s) on the grade report. RETENTION OF WORK Submit all drawings/documents in the form of prints; blacklines or bluelines, (no originals, plots or sepias). Exams, quizzes and exercises will be returned according to College procedures. All drawings/documents will have grade sheets returned for the designated project. All work submitted by the student will normally be returned within a reasonable amount of time; i.e. (drawing projects that require at least a two weeks to prepare for submission will take a minimum of two weeks to complete grading). However, the course instructor reserves the right to retain any student work for display and teaching resource purposes. Any student work that is retained will be made available for student review and documentation upon request. SPECIAL COURSE REQUIREMENTS

5 COURSE RESOURCES All classroom resources; supplied textbooks, periodicals for review, zoning guides and specifications, or other additional materials provided for class enrichment shall remain in the classroom at all times. Resources provided are copyrighted and copying of items without permission of instructor is prohibited. All materials reviewed by students must be returned to the location they were obtained from. Failure to do this will result in a grade not being issued at the end of the grading period. ATTENDANCE POLICY The school policy will be followed and attendance will be noted each class period. A percentage of your grade is based upon your attendance. Three unexcused absences will automatically reduce your final grade by one letter grade. An additional grade percentage will be related to your class participation in projects, presentations and discussions. STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT As an enrolled student at Columbus State Community College, you have agreed to abide by the Student Code of Conduct as outlined in the Student Handbook. You should familiarize yourself with the student code. The Columbus State Community College expects you to exhibit high standards of academic integrity, respect and responsibility. Any confirmed incidence of misconduct, including plagiarism and other forms of cheating, will be treated seriously and in accordance with College Policy and Procedure AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) POLICY It is Columbus State policy to provide reasonable accommodations to students with documented disabilities. INCLEMENT WEATHER OR OTHER EMERGENCIES In the event of severe weather or other emergencies that could force the college to close or to cancel classes, such information will be broadcast on radio stations and television stations. Students who reside in areas that fall under a Level III emergency should not attempt to drive to the college even if the college remains open. Assignments due on a day the college is closed will be due the next scheduled class period. If an examination is scheduled for a day the campus is closed, the examination will be given on the next class day. If a laboratory is scheduled on the day the campus is closed, it will be made up at the next scheduled laboratory class. If necessary, laboratory make-up may be held on a Saturday.

6 INCLEMENT WEATHER OR OTHER EMERGENCIES Students who miss a class because of weather-related problems with the class is held as scheduled are responsible for reading and other assignments as indicated in the syllabus. If a laboratory or examination is missed, contact me as soon as possible to determine how to make up the missed exam or lab. Remember! It is the student s responsibility to keep up with reading and other assignments when a scheduled class does not meet, whatever the reason. In the event the college is forced to close during Final Examination Week, exams scheduled for the first missed date will be rescheduled for (date), in the same location at the same time scheduled. Exams scheduled for a second missed date will be rescheduled for. Thus, our final exam is scheduled for (date) at o clock. If the college is closed that day, the exam will be held on (date) at o clock. If our exam is the second day the college has been closed, the exam will be held on (date) at o clock. FINANCIAL AID ATTENDANCE REPORTING Columbus State is required by federal law to verify the enrollment of students who participate in Federal Title IV student aid programs and/or who receive educational benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs. It is the responsibility of the College to identify students who do not commence attendance or who stop attendance in any course for which they are registered and paid. Non-attendance is reported quarterly by each instructor, and results in a student being administratively withdrawn from the class section. Please contact the Financial Aid Office for information regarding the impact of course withdrawals on financial aid eligibility.

7 UNITS OF INSTRUCTION Week 1 Unit of Instruction: Landscape Industry Operations Overview -Students will gain the foundational overview of the operations of a proficient landscape firm. -Students will discover the basic business terminology and principles associated with managing a profitable landscape business. -Students will review the financial tools necessary for them to comprehend the factors associated with attaining bottom line profit for a landscape firm. Assignment: Planimeters Introduction & Area Measurements Assigned Reading: Chapter 1 Structuring for Accountability Assessment Methods: Week 2 Unit of Instruction: Accounting Principles for Landscape Operations -Students will gain an understanding of accounting methods, distinctions, function and applications -Students will evaluate accounting systems infrastructures -Students will create a chart of accounts with guidelines, classification, terminology and accountability -Students will observe the use of Planimeters for area and linear measurement -Students will tabulate area measurements and calculate the conversion of area to units for construction implementation -Students will present to classmates a safety presentation for the landscape industry Assignment: Class Exercise - Planimeters (Manual & Digital) Student Safety Presentation Class Exercise Critique Assigned Reading: Chapter 2 Budget Development Assessment Methods: Supplementary Class Exercises
