2 FMD incidence The Directorate of Animal Health conducts annually many surveys but there are no cases have been detected. All ( PCR Ag Det NSP ELISA Tests ) were negative An annually serological surveillance is conducted to evaluate the antibodies of the adopted and used vaccine strains in Syria ( A Iran 05 O Pan Asia 2 - Asia1 ) after vaccination. 3 The undertaken procurers to prevent the entry of this disease to Syria * In Syria there is a developed lab in the Directorate of Animal Health divided into three Departments as the following : - Serological Department (Ab Det ELISA Test Ag Det Elisa Test NSP ELISA Test ). - PCR Department. - Cell culture department. * A national contingency plan have been prepared to protect, prevent and control this disease and all the required procedures have been undertaken in case of the diseases entry to the country. * There is a developed epidemiological unit. * Vet. Quarantine and disinfection strict procedures have been applied on border points and the smuggling have been banned. * Central committees conduct visits to Al Badia and the provinces to acknowledge with the health status of animal wealth herds. * The Animal Wealth protection law No. 29/2006 determines the required legislations concerning animal wealth protection.

4 Description of FMD control strategy An immediate notification system is available as well as periodically,monthly, quarter, half annually and annually reports. Scientific brochures, symposiums and lectures of this disease have been prepared to increase vets and breeders awareness. Slaughter houses control and immediate notification of any suspected cases have been done within these slaughter houses. Follow up the healthy status in the neighboring and region countries.

5 Vaccination * Cattle vaccination is applied twice a year, but sheep is vaccinated one a year only and this vaccination is obligatory and free of charge. The used strains in vaccination are as the following: ( O Pan Asia2 - Asia1- A Iran 05). * Strains are determined according to the healthy status of the country, the international organizations and the reference labs. * Serological surveillances for cattle and small ruminants have annually conducted to determine the level of the antibodies after vaccination.

7 Description of FMD surveillance results In 2012 a NSP ELISA surveillance have been done on 5000 sera samples 3000 cattle sera samples and 2000 sheep sera samples. All samples were negative for nonstructural FMD protein.

8 in 2012, 1500 sera samples were collected from vaccinated animals in days post vaccination. Sera were tested by LP ELISA. The results of LP ELISA have Shown that 80% of animals were protected against FMD infection.

9 Description of FMD control measures vaccination program is applied obligatory and free of charge for all cattle and sheep. In 2012, cattle were vaccinated by 2 million doses and sheep were vaccinated by 10 million doses. Vaccination covers all Syrian areas. The vaccination campaigns are applied by the governmental veterinarians with cooperation with the private veterinarians.

10 In the days after vaccination. The stuff of central laboratory takes samples from vaccinated animals in order to check the efficacy of vaccination. Central committees follow up the process of vaccination and samples collection. Control procedures are applied to prevent Animal movements between provinces without health certification. A contingency plan to control FMD is approved by all country concerned authorities.

11 Critical assessment on if strategy is achieving the goal No FMD cases have been detected in 2012 under our control procedures. we are looking for FMD Eradication with vaccination by Using vaccination strategy and continuous surveillance.
