8 Passion and Commitment to Dental Public Health Deok-Young Park, DDS, MSD, PhD Professor, College of Dentistry, Gangneung-Wonju National University, Korea Ever since I was shocked by stark reality of dental health inequity in the rural area of Korea where I worked as a Public Health Practitioner in my late twenties, I have dedicated to the general public. I have been pursuing a specialized career as researcher, educator and administrator in dental school, clinician in dental hospital, and activist to advocate oral health promotion for past 20 years. I have achieved success in legislation of Oral Health Act in Korea, launching and expanding water fluoridation, and reducing nationwide dental caries of children by almost half. As I believe reliable data is critical in evidence-based dental public health, I have been focusing on nationwide monitoring of oral health status during last 10 years. My commitment to oral health promotion was not limited within Korea. While I was serving as dean of dental school and director of voluntary service center, I have actively managed voluntary dental care service programs to Cambodia, Indonesia and Mongolia. I have also participated in the exchange programs with Japan and Russia. Based on my experience and successes in Korea, I would like to extend my commitment to oral health promotion for all the people suffering around the world. I know that in Asia alone there are billion people suffering. I feel privileged to be a dentist and strongly believe that dental profession in the 21 st century has a special mission to accomplish as manifested in the FDI Vision Dental public health remains as one of the most serious challenges in pursuing life with optimal health both in developing and even in developed countries. As a dental professional with a track record of commitment for dental public health, I would like to contribute to bringing FDI closer to Asia and developing dental public health programs both for developing and developed countries. I hope to have the opportunity of serving Public Health Committee of FDI and would like to count on the support of all distinguished members of FDI.

Prof. Park has actively involved himself in various academic researches, lectures and writings as mentioned in his CV enclosed and his enthusiasm and diligence have influenced the Korean dental education a lot. His propulsive leadership and friendly personality have also received approval from his colleagues worldwide. All the KDA members and I have come to a decision to strongly support Prof. Deok-Young Park for the election of the members of the Public Health Committee in order to give him a golden opportunity to use his experiences and abilities in the international dental fields.
