1 T N D H A H Y S P Y A letter from our President Rooted in Advocacy, Service and Education I am deeply humbled to once again serve as President of the Tennessee Dental Hygienists Association. What can I say, Let s Do It Again! I vividly remember those days; talking with you, learning about you and encouraging you to embrace the challenges of this profession. Well, I m back in the saddle again traveling the road of professional stability while also navigating unchartered territory. You may not see or hear about our work behind the scenes, but, rest assured TNDHA has been engaging in conversations with other organizations to educate; to learn and to generate collective actions to improve access and ensure the future of our profession. This year, our goal is to bring you fresh and exciting ideas to keep you rooted in the profession and encourage others to ride the wave of involvement and success. Why not connect with us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn and see what information is out there just for you! It s not too early to get excited and start planning to attend our 90th annual session. Can you believe it? Our 90th!!! Once again, we will be hosting our annual session at the Inn at Opryland. Join us for a fun filled, educational and rewarding weekend. You will not want to miss this celebration!! Finally, trust that your organizations efforts are always rooted in advocacy, education and service; but most importantly, in YOU! Reach out to me anytime at chinds4me@gmail.com or (901) I m looking forward to a challenging and fun year. Let s make this year one of our best! Yours in solidarity, Carmen Hy-lights 1. 2 Annual Conference 2018 The TNDHA 89th Annual Session was held at the Inn at Oprlyand this year and ran from April 19th to the 21st. It was a great success. The TNDHA Board of Trustees and delegates met Thursday night for the first house of delegates to take care of some business followed by a welcome reception Luau. Friday was filled with CEU s, which included vendors and ended with the HYPAC event at Miss Jeanne s Dinner Theatre. Saturday finished the weekend out with the Second House of Delegates which included voting for our new officers. The Awards luncheon and Officer installation is always a nice way to honor those who work so hard in our profession here in the state of TN, as well as our schools and students. Then we finished out the the last CE course of the weekend. The speakers this year included Patti DiGgangi, Amber Auger, Amy Kinnamon, Shirley Gutkowski They were all very informative!

5 ADHA SR Delegate Report The ADHA 95th Annual Conference was held In Columbus, Ohio, June 20-25, Next year ADHA 96th Annual Conference will be held in Louisville, Kentucky, June 21-25, This will be a new format-the conference will be starting on Friday. Tennessee Dental Hygiene Association was represented by 3 Delegates and 3 Alternate Delegates. Susan Melton served as a Page during the House of Delegates. We all attended a private meeting with ADHA Legislative person Ann Lynch. We discussed how to get the rules and regulations written by the Board of Dentistry. We also discussed how to get Direct Reimbursement under written protocol. Ann Lynch suggested getting as many Tennessee RDHs to sign up for a Individual NPI number. There is no cost and it is a tangible, powerful statement. As a member, you can go ADHA s website under member and get step by step instructions. 18 States have direct reimbursement. Carmen Pinkston attended the CODA meeting. All Delegates and Alternate Delegates attended the Mega Issue Forum, Membership/Leadership Workshop, Advocacy Update, District Discussions, and House of Delegates. The Resolutions that Passed in the HOD: PR#1 The ADHA supports elimination of the patient procedure-based, single encounter clinical examination for candidates who are graduates of Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited dental hygiene programs and who are eligible to take the National Board Hygiene Examination. PR#2 The ADHA supports the dental hygienists ability to prescribe, administer and dispense all evidence-based preventive and therapeutic fluorides. PR#3 The ADHA supports interprofessional advocacy of public and social policies that promote health. PBY#1 Article V, Section 7c. of the Bylaws be amended to read: c. All terms shall begin at the conclusion of the installation of the Board of Trustees during the 3rd House of Delegates Meeting. PBY#3 Article IX, Section 3 of the bylaws were amended. This was a restructuring of the Nominating Committee and there was a lot of discussion. PBY#4 Article XVI of the Bylaws was amended to add Section 4. To read: Amendment without notice. Prior to the end of the Second House of Delegates, bylaws may be considered for amendment without notice, by a vote of three fourths of the House of Delegates. Adoption of these amendments would require a three fourth vote, In conclusion, we worked hard and studied hard. We came back better prepared to serve TNDHA. BUT, we also had some fun and I want to thank all of the Delegates, Alternate Delegates and TNDHA for the opportunity to serve you. Respectfully, Cindy Godfrey, RDH,BS
