Dear Friends and Colleagues, As summer winds down and our kids are transitioning back into school, we look back at what s important in our lives. The camaraderie and friendship over the years is what makes our study club unique. Our unique study club allows us to break away from the monotony of private practice and share our everyday problems with like-minded friends and colleagues. Of course, the unparalleled education our club provides is also something we can all be proud of. Having gone through the fundamentals of dentistry over the past 6 years, I think it s time we tackle more advance and cutting edge topics in dentistry today. This year, we hope to examine the (controversial) management of inflammatory peri-implant disease, speech pathology associated with complex oral conditions, latest technologies available for caries detection and non-verbal communication strategies in dentistry. We are also proud to have Professor Karen Baker come back to our study club on Friday, January 13 th, 2017 to discuss oral homecare products. Based on her past presentations, this is one meeting we are really looking forward to attending. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for being a member of this study club. By participating in this unique study club, you have shown your dedication to enhancing patient care through continuing education a quality we should all be proud of. Once again, Lisa, Heather and I are only stewards of your study club, and as stewards, we welcome any feedback and suggestions on how we can make your study club even better. Sincerely, Edwin Leung

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES - INFLAMMATORY PERI-IMPLANT DISEASE Date: Friday, September 15 th, Time: 6:00pm to 8:30 pm. CE Credit hours. Location: Heathman Lodge, Vancouver, WA. SSC Symposium Video by Dr. Paul Fletcher with presentations by Drs. Greg Boice and Edwin Leung. Join us for an informative discussion into the world of peri-implant diseases. Management of periimplant disease is a controversial topic and different surgeons have different management strategies. We will be reviewing a SSC Symposium Video by Dr. Paul Fletcher and Drs. Boice and Leung will also share their perspectives on how to manage this problem. Dr. Fletcher received his degree in dentistry from the University of Maryland. After a two-year general practice residency at the Veterans Administration hospital in Portland, Oregon, he joined the Veterans Administration Medical Center, in New York, where he trained for two years and received his specialty certificate in periodontics. Dr. Fletcher is now an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, where he teaches post-graduate periodontics and implant dentistry.
SPEECH, LANGUAGE AND COMMON ORAL CONDITIONS. Date: Thursday, November 10 th, Time: 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. CE Credit 2.5 hours. Location: Heathman Lodge, Vancouver, WA. Featured Speaker: Barbara Erskine, MS, SLP. Barbara Erskine, MS, SLP specializes in Speech and Language therapy for children, teens and adults who have communication difficulties associated with conditions like Myofunctional Disorders, Tongue Thrusts, Thumb and Pacifier Habit, Cleft Palate, Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Voice Disorders, Feeding Disorders, etc. Ms. Erskine graduated from the University of Oregon with a Masters of Science degree. She has 25 years of experience as a Certified Speech Pathologist and as a Certified Orofacial Myologist and her presentation will be very useful in our everyday practice.
ORAL HOMECARE PRODUCTS: WHAT WORKS??? Date: Friday, January 13th, Time: 7:30am to 1:00pm. CE Credit 5 hours Location: Heathman Lodge, Vancouver, WA. Featured Speaker: Professor Karen Baker, MS. Most of us have heard her speak last year. From your very positive feedback, we are excited to have Karen Baker, MS, come back and give us a presentation on Oral Homecare Products: What Works??? As you may know, Professor Karen Baker has been on the Dental College faculty at the University of Iowa for 34 years and occupies a unique role in dental practice and education. She is a clinical pharmacist with a master s degree in clinical pharmacology and therapeutics and is focused on patient-specific dental drug therapy. Her dental education-based pharmacy and drug therapy consultation center is the only one in the U.S. She has authored more than 50 articles and abstracts and lectures extensively in pre-doctoral and graduate-level courses at the University of Iowa.
CARIES DETECTION TECHNOLOGY FACE OFF Date: Thursday, March 16 th, Time: 6:00pm to 8:30pm. CE Credit 2.5 hours. Location: Heathman Lodge, Vancouver, WA. Product Presenters: 1. Diagnodent by Kavo USA. 2. Soprolife by Acteon. 3. CamX Spectra by Air Techniques. Diagnodent by Kavo USA, Soprolife by Acteon, and CamX Spectra by Air Techniques will present their caries detection products and equipment, and then try to convince you, why their product is the superior one While having 3 different company representatives in the same room can sometimes be a little awkward, this meeting format will allow the type of interaction that a single presenter cannot provide. Ultimately, our goal is to enhance your educational experience and I hope you will find this evening useful too!
MASTER YOUR SIXTH SENSE: UNDERSTANDING THE ART OF PERSUASION, BODY LANGUAGE, AND HUMAN DECISION MAKING FOR IMPROVED TREATMENT ACCEPTANCE Date: Friday, May 19th, Time: 7:30 am to 1:00 pm. CE Credit 5 hours. Location: Embassy Suites Hotel near Portland PDX Airport. Joint meeting with SSC doctors and staff. Featured Speaker: Christopher Ramsey, DMD. Hailing from Jupiter, Florida, Dr. Ramsey has pioneered a unique way of understanding a dental patient s body language into an easy-to-understand lecture. We were impressed at how intuitive his program was at the SSC Symposium and we hope you will be impressed with this information as well. This program has changed lives in many ways, learn how to better communicate with others, verbally and nonverbally. The keys to understanding how and why people make decisions are reviewed. In addition, the elements of nonverbal communication are shown to help people better understand the people they are looking to serve. As professional individuals continue to improve technically in their respected fields, understanding the elements the M.A.S.T.E.R. program has shown to be extremely beneficial in their long term success.
