2 Chronic Oral and Facial Course Description Chronic orofacial pain causes significant suffering and disability. An accurate diagnosis of chronic pain is very challenging but critical considering its impact on the path towards pain resolution. This course reviews the spectrum of chronic pain conditions presenting in the oral cavity, face and head, with emphasis on the co-morbidity of headaches with temporomandibular disorders. Evidence based diagnostic methods and management strategies are presented and illustrated via case studies. Educational Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: Recognize that chronic pain is multi-etiologic Describe the differential diagnosis of chronic oral and facial pain, and headaches Identify the evidence based chronic pain management strategies Registration Fee and Credit The registration fee is $350 for DDS/MD/DO and $225 for all other attendees. Registration fee includes course materials, continental breakfast and lunch. The UNC School of Dentistry designates this course up to 7 hours of continuing education credit. A discount is available if you attend both courses. All non-dental professional attendees will be issued a "letter of attendance". Time and Location The program will be held at the UNC School of Dentistry, Koury G411. The UNC School of Dentistry is located at the corner of Manning Drive and South Columbia Street. 3 Pain - FRIDAY, MAY 4, 2018 Speakers UNC FACULTY: Dr. Pei Feng Lim, Dr. Massimiliano Di Giosia, Dr. Daniela Vivaldi, Dr. Hanzara Panol, Dr. Scott De Rossi (This program will be team taught via case-based learning) Dr. Pei Feng Lim received her Dental degree from the National University of Singapore in 1995, and her Master of Science and Certificate in Orofacial Pain at the University of Kentucky in She is an Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, where she serves as the Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Pain Program. Dr. Lim is the Co-Program Director of an NIDCR institutional K12 award and the Program Director of the Orofacial Pain Graduate Program. Dr. Lim has published numerous book chapters and articles on Orofacial Pain. She has also lectured extensively locally and internationally. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and serves as an Executive Director on the Board. She is also an investigator on several NIH research grant awards. Her research interests include pain education, pain pharmacogenomics, and widespread pain. Dr. Massimiliano Di Giosia is a graduate of the University G.d Annunzio, School of Dentistry - Chieti, Italy. He completed a residency program in Orofacial Pain at the University of Kentucky in 2007 and an Orthodontic residency program at the University of Cagliari, Italy, in He has also completed an advanced diploma in headache medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and is certified by the European Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Di Giosia is an Assistant Professor at UNC. He is a clinician, a faculty and attending of the UNC Orofacial Pain Residency Program, and a clinical pain researcher. He lectures extensively both locally and internationally. 4 Diagnosis and Management of Acute and C Course Description Many dental patients present with symptoms of acute and/or chronic orofacial pain. Some also experience postoperative pain and flare-ups. The dentist is frequently involved in managing sleep problems for the patient. The degree to which the dentist can effectively diagnose and manage these conditions can make a substantial difference in the success of dental office. Educational Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: Recognize the regulatory changes for opioid prescriptions in response to the overconsumption of prescription narcotic analgesics Identify the most effective approaches to pain control during and after the dental appointment Identify the most effective approaches to managing endodontic emergencies Discuss contemporary diagnosis and management strategies for chronic orofacial pain Define the dentist's role in the management of patients with sleep problems Recognize the role of bruxism in the pathogenesis of chronic orofacial pain Registration Fee and Credit: The registration fee is $350 for dentists and $225 for Team Members. Kenan Distinguished professor in the Department of Dental Ecology at the School of Dentistry and adjunct professor in the Department of Epidemiology at UNC. Dr. Claire de la Varre, is a consulting hypnotist in the School of Dentistry Comfort Center where she works with a wide range of patients for issues, such as dental anxiety, bruxism, sleep, and pain management, as well as medical referrals from UNC medical school departments. Dr. Massimiliano Di Giosia is an Assistant Professor at UNC. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and is certified by the European Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He is a clinician, a faculty and attending of the UNC Orofacial Pain Residency Program, and a clinical pain researcher. Dr. Raymond Dionne is currently a research professor at East Carolina University in the Department of Pharmacology at the Brody School of Medicine and the School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Ashraf Fouad is the Freedland Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Endodontics at UNC. His research is on endodontic microbiology, pulp regeneration, clinical outcomes and the link of apical periodontitis and systemic disease. Dr. Asma Khan is an Associate Professor in the UNC School of Dentistry Department of Endodontics. Her research interests include pain mechanisms and management as well as regenerative endodontics.
