3 Course Descriptions The Value of Interprofessional Oral Health Practice This course will provide background on the paradigm shift in health care which has heightened interprofessional care models as a means to achieving Triple or Quadruple Aim goals of reducing per capita costs, improving the health of populations, and improving the experience of care for provider and patient. Oral health integration and coordination models will be discussed and the impact oral health can have on patient care and patient systems will be highlighted. The overall aim of the course is to raise basic understanding of opportunities with oral health integration and coordination of care while presenting on the financial and policy implications of true team-based, person centered health care. Understanding Dysbiosis Oral Disease Development from a Commensal Point of View Polymicrobial infections are caused by a change in the microbial composition (dysbiosis) of the residential microbial biofilm and therefore a problem of microbial ecology. The microbial flora is influenced by several factors, includingenvironmental perturbations due to dietary choices of the host. Current understanding of caries etiology a polymicrobial infection: o Consortia formed by multiple microorganisms acting collectively (synergistically) to initiate and expand cavities o Shift in the microbial profile leading to dysbiosis o Functional output (e.g. lactic acid production) of a microbial community is more important than its taxonomic composition o Koch s postulates do not adequately describe polymicrobial infections like caries and periodontal disease Methods to treat mono-infections of invading species are not useful to treat dysbiotic communities Promising approaches to combat polymicrobial infections include the remodeling of a dysbiotic community to a healthy community Conversations About Change: An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented method of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen an individual's motivation for a movement toward a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person's own arguments for change. In this interactive session, Dr. Allen and Ms. Carlson will provide an introduction to this evidenced-based method of patient communication, specifically tailored towards oral health professions interested in managing caries as a chronic disease process. In their own unique style, they will help participants experience both the spirit and the core skills of motivational interviewing, with exercises designed to speak to both the head and the heart. Finally, participants will receive practical tips on how to start incorporating motivational interviewing into their workplace -- which can be revolutionary for the patient, the dental team, and ultimately, our profession.
