PROGRAM INTRODUCTION The Atlas Pilates Teacher Training Program is designed to train students to effectively teach the original system of corrective exercise created and refined by Joseph H. Pilates. We re committed to advancing the overall quality of Classical Pilates instruction through skills-building, knowledge-sharing and elaboration on the sound fitness principles upon which the Pilates Method is based. Our experienced, knowledgeable, and practical Pilates Teacher-Trainers inspire and encourage students. The challenging, knowledge-rich, and supportive studio environment is geared towards the development of autonomy in new Pilates teachers and we strive to prepare new instructors for future professional success. Why train with Atlas Pilates? In today s competitive fitness industry, many companies seek to capitalize on the popularity of Pilates and the demand for new instructors by quickly and indiscriminately certifying large numbers of new teachers. We feel that by their very nature, those types of programs merely skim the work, dilute standards, and do a disservice to earnest students in search of quality training. Our program adheres to a traditional immersive approach to classical Pilates teacher training and requires up to a year of intensive study and testing. Atlas Pilates has earned a devoted following of Pilates teachers and clients who choose to take lessons in our studio. Our reputation is rooted in our fierce adherence to Classical Pilates principles and to our conscientious and sensitive employment of The Method to achieve transformative results. Over the years, we have been frequently approached by Pilates enthusiasts and studio owners who seek the sort of high-quality and practical training that can produce teachers of the caliber found at our studio. In 2014, after much careful consideration, we opened our studio to the next generation of Classical Pilates instructors because we strongly believe the world needs more well-trained instructors who share our passion for this remarkable vocation. Director of Education: Lori Coleman-Brown Beginning in the early 1980 s, our Director of Education Lori Coleman-Brown began learning Pilates directly from Joseph Pilates protégée Romana Kryzanowska. Under Romana s tutelage, Lori learned not only the exercise forms and rhythms, but also how to get results for clients by meeting individual needs with Romana s unique approach to the work. Lori began teaching Pilates in New York in 1986, 3
and relocated to Seattle in 1993 to open the first Pilates teacher training center in the Pacific Northwest, which she co-owned and directed for over 16 years. Lori has trained instructors locally, nationally and internationally, and continues to be a leading educator in the Classical Pilates world. Lori s Pilates education and her decades of experience, combined with her successful Physical Therapy practice, have earned her prominence in her field and the respect of her peers. In addition to managing our Teacher Training Program, Lori maintains a regular Pilates teaching calendar, gives presentations and facilitates workshops/workgroups, and teaches lessons at other studios and training centers. She is also responsible for developing our educational materials and maintaining the curriculum. What Makes Atlas Pilates Different? We are results-driven and focused on helping clients reach their goals through careful tailoring of their individual Pilates workouts. We avoid being dogmatic and formulaic. We re unabashed Pilates traditionalists, but find a satisfying amount of creative space within The Pilates Method. We never feel the urge to resort to the latest exercise fads or Pilates fusions. Our business has high standards. We pay attention to the details, we strive to be well organized, professional, and sustainable. We work hard to provide excellent customer service. We endeavor to exceed our clients service expectations and to help them to discover the joy of Pilates. Our approach is modern, specific, scientific and efficient. We find meaning in the work. It s rewarding, and we are inspired and energized by the amazing personal transformations we ve witnessed. What You Can Expect from the Atlas Pilates Teacher Training Program A traditionally patterned hands-on apprenticeship-style training with veteran instructors who were trained and certified by Joseph Pilates protegee Romana Kryzanowska. Immersion in a busy working studio with professional dedicated colleagues and a steady stream of clients with real issues and goals. Training in the ancillary skills important to a successful Pilates career, such as customer service, sales, scheduling, tracking and billing. Mentoring by Lori Coleman-Brown and feedback from other Atlas Pilates Staff Instructors who are readily available to answer questions. Exposure and opportunities to actively participate in our many educational, community and industry events. Maximum class size is 6 and the student/teacher ratio is 6:1. Atlas Pilates Staff In our busy working studio, Atlas Pilates experienced Staff Instructors teach Classical Pilates lessons daily to clients from all walks of life. Students enrolled in the Teacher Training Program observe the Instructors as they go about their work, and take weekly lessons with them as part of a Practicum. In addition to Lori Coleman-Brown, Staff Instructors currently include Teresa Shupe, Danielle Begorre, Liesbeth Robison, Danae Montreuil, Elana Jacobs, and Ginny Haley-Kanigel. A currentl ist of active instructors is always available on our website at Our Facilities 4
Atlas Pilates is located in Seattle s Belltown neighborhood. The studio equipped with a full array of authentic Gratz Pilates apparatus and other modern studio props and amenities. In addition to training equipment, our purpose-built studio uses sensor-controlled high efficiency daylight spectrum lighting. We take our indoor air quality seriously and use HEPA air filtration to remove dust and allergens, zero-voc finishes, and low emissions Ecosurfaces flooring. Job Placement Atlas Pilates does not provide formal job placement to graduates of our program, but graduates will have acquired the necessary skills and be qualified to begin working in our studio, other Pilates studios, Fitness Centers, Dance schools, College and University Pilates programs. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION There are Four Basic Components to the Teacher Training Program: A. Seminars B. Practicum C. Classroom and Tutoring D. Testing A. Seminars Expected Time Commitment: Approximately 42 Hours In three progressive weekend Seminars we explore the Classical Pilates exercise forms, practice the exercises, discuss the Pilates Method, and discuss underlying theory and philosophy. We logically and progressively arrange all Pilates exercises into useful toolkits from which a skilled instructor can construct effective exercise programs for individuals. Seminar Descriptions: Basic Systems Seminar Learn the Basic Pilates exercises on the Reformer, Cadillac, Mat, Chairs, Barrels and other apparatus. Explore the Pilates exercise philosophy and approach, with focus on the basic functional movements and relevant structural anatomy. Practice standard alignments, posture, muscular actions, and rhythms, in order to assist and challenge the body in action. Review and explore preparation for Pilates exercises and other breakdowns. Work on Fundamentals, employing the Principles of Pilates: Centering the 5
Powerhouse, Control, Concentration, Precision, Breath, Rhythm/Flow. Intermediate Systems Seminar Learn the Intermediate Pilates System exercises on the Reformer, Cadillac, Mat, Chairs, Barrels and other small apparatus. Work on better balance, awareness, and control in the body. Begin to develop power, endurance and release in proportion to what the body needs. Discuss the 5 parts of the mind- intelligence, memory, will, imagination and intuition and the powerful influence they have on developing the human potential. Review normal joint ranges of motion in the exercises and how they relate to functional postures. Put together combinations of exercises into workouts. Learn how to determine what to avoid for injuries and conditions. Learn to stand, move and provide assistance with your own powerhouse integrity. Advanced Systems Seminar Learn to see and do the Advanced System Pilates exercises on the Reformer, Cadillac, Mat, Pedi-pole, Guillotine, Chairs and Barrels and other small apparatus. Deeper understanding mentally and physically of the powerhouse for use in all directions and endeavors. Maximize the body s ability to exercise while employing all of the Pilates principles at the same time. Employing the Five Parts of The Mind. Break down Advanced Exercises in order to practice the parts, then reassemble. Decision making skills development, when to push, and when to refine in order to make progress. Practice transitions between exercises. B. Practicum Expected Time Commitment: Approximately 600 Hours In order to develop expert teaching skills, the practicum consists of 600 Hours, combined of required regular Pilates workouts, observation, assisting and practice teaching. Practicum hours must be finished within 12 months, unless a written extension is approved by the Program Director. Practicum Components: Pilates Workouts Observation and Assisting Practice Teaching Pilates Workouts: The regimen is approximately 150 Pilates Workouts (150 Hours) at the rate of approximately three workouts per week over the year of the Program. 6
Qualifying Workouts include: Workouts with Lori Coleman-Brown (1 per week) Self-directed Personal Workouts (1 per week) Workouts with Atlas Pilates Staff Instructors (1 per week) Workouts with Visiting Teachers (students are expected take advantage of these opportunities) Workouts need to be documented by the student in a Workouts Diary. Determination as to the sufficiency of frequency and total number of workouts is at the discretion of the Program Director. Observation and Assisting: During the course of the training, the student will focus on developing body literacy, the ability to read bodies and determine individual needs. Students are expected to practice the material, and to carefully observe experienced teachers who are body literate, fluent in the Pilates Method, and who employ the Method with their own styles to get positive results. Students are expected to unobtrusively observe real clients of varying ages, fitness levels, occupations in the Classical Pilates studio setting. Practical teaching skills development begins when instructors feel comfortable inviting students to regularly assist with clients. Practice Teaching: At an appropriate point during the course of the program, the student will transition from assisting teachers to practice teaching Pilates to other students and other healthy bodies. Teaching in the studio with experienced instructors nearby, is a safe way to accelerate skills building by repeating in practice what has been observed and studied. C. Classroom and Tutoring Expected time commitment: 40 Hours Classroom sessions are held at regular intervals throughout the program. These meetings give students the opportunity to ask questions and review comments from Observation & Assisting hours. Students also receive individualized help with problems, and private office hours with Lori Coleman-Brown are made available on occasion to discuss issues. D. Testing Completion of Program Hours is not sufficient to complete the Program. Successful completion also requires students to demonstrate a mastery of the material by passing three multi-part exams administered in progression over the course of the program. A student s failure to pass any of the tests in the timeframe allotted by the Program Director may result in dismissal from the program. Students may be permitted to make additional attempts to pass tests, in whole or in part, within the allotted time frame at the discretion of the program director. Basic (Fundamentals) Test (200 Hour Test): A practical assessment and a written exam 7
based on the Beginner System material. This test must be passed by Hour 280. Intermediate Test (400 Hour Test): A practical assessment and a written exam based on an Intermediate System material. This test must be passed by Hour 480. Advanced Test (600 Hour Test): A practical assessment and a written Exam based on an Advanced System material. This test must be passed within 80 hours of reaching Hour 600. The Practical Assessment component of a Test is generally 2-3 hours in length and consist of doing a workout at the prescribed level and teaching a client. Each level of assessment may also include a group mat class at that level. The Written Exam component of a Test is 2-5 hours in length and consists of a case study and a question and short answer portion.
