1 Beaver Lake Middle School Physical Education Syllabus Mr. Skinner (425) Welcome to Beaver Lake Physical Education! Health and Physical Education teaches our students that good health and safety principles can lead to a lifetime of healthy practices, resulting in more productive, active, and successful lives. The purpose of physical education is to develop physically literate students students who acquire the knowledge and possess the skills needed to engage in meaningful and health-enhancing lifetime physical activity. We will work to establish the concepts and skills necessary for safe and healthy living, and in turn, for successful learning. Course Objectives: To achieve and maintain a desired fitness level To obtain a skill level that will enable students to remain active in sports either recreationally or competitively throughout their adult life To understand sports rules and strategies well enough to be an educated participant, or spectator To display good sportsmanship and teamwork in individual, group, or team activities To gain the knowledge necessary to live a healthy and active lifestyle. Course Description: Activities in this class include individual, group, and team activities encompassed in one week units where students participate cooperatively, competitively, or recreationally. We will focus on fitness Workout Wednesdays one day each week. Units will depend on the trimester and season. Fitness days are dedicated to educating and improving individual fitness levels and provide a variety of fitness activities to participate in. These days include exercises, games, group fitness, etc. Some examples of these activities include: Running (Timed and Pacer), Rope Jumping, Relays, Aerobics, Circuit training, Cardio Machines, dynamic and static stretching, Wi-fit, cooperative games.

2 Middle School (Grades 6 8) Topics STANDARD 1: Students will demonstrate competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns. Throw, Catch, Pass and Receive, Dribble, Strike, Forehand and Backhand, Shoot, Serve, Volley, Offensive Skills, Defensive Skills STANDARD 2: Students will apply knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance. Invasion Games - Offensive Tactics, Defensive Tactics, Transitions, Net/Wall Games, Create Space, Net/Wall Games, Tactics and Shots, Field/Strike, Offensive Tactics, Field/Strike, Defensive Tactics, Target Games, Movement and Rhythm, Outdoor Pursuits STANDARD 3: Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness. Benefit of Physical Activity, Engagement in Physical Activity, Components of Fitness, Health-Related Fitness, FITT Principle, Phases of Exercise, Engagement in Fitness Activities, Body Systems, Nutrition, Goal-Setting, Physical Activity and Nutrition Log STANDARD 4: Students will exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others. Personal Responsibility, Rules and Etiquette, Receive and Provide Feedback, Work with Others, Safety STANDARD 5: Students will recognize the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction. Challenge, Self-Expression and Enjoyment, Social Interaction CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS Physical Education is a class that has a lot of movement and requires a great amount of cooperation from our students. It is very important to us that your child remains safe and enjoys a fun, productive learning environment. Below you will find a list of expectations established for PE. *Be respectful and kind to all *Be helpful and courteous *Be responsible *Dress appropriately for activities *Be ready to be active *Be a positive participant *Have good sportsmanship *Be safe and treat equipment safely & with care *Follow classroom rules and guidelines *Be a good listener and follow directions

3 CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS Participation in Physical Education shall require clothing appropriate to the activity, such as, athletic shoes, shorts, sweatpants (optional) and t-shirts. Appropriate clothing promotes freedom of movement, safe participation, and builds good hygiene. Research and experience show us that students who wear uniforms are more comfortable trying new activities and feel less competition from their peers. BLMS P.E. shirt or plain light gray T-shirt (small manufacturer s logo ok.) Navy or black elastic waist athletic shorts (solid color) (no baggy/sagging shorts, no zippers, snaps or buttons (small manufacturer s logo ok) PE clothing shouldn t be put on over clothing worn to school or the clothing shouldn t be altered in any way (ie: cut off sleeves, additional writing). Yoga pants are not allowed. Athletic socks that are preferably not worn to school Athletic shoes an athletic shoe (non-marking with laces tied securely) preferably used only for P.E. A slip on shoe is not acceptable. Black sole shoes must not make marks on the gym floor. o When classes are held outside, students are encouraged to have sweatpants, sweatshirts, and/or a jacket to keep them warm and dry. These items must be worn over the required shorts and t-shirt. o The P.E. teacher will put the student s first name and last name initial on the front of the T-shirt. I encourage you do the same on the shorts. This will help us return lost clothes to their owner. o All P.E. clothing is to be taken home to be washed on Friday and brought back on Monday. Having clean PE clothes is considered being prepared for class (under the grading criteria) and appropriate personal hygiene. PARTICIPATION Participation is a term used to describe student performance in all phases of Physical Education class. The five categories that define the concept of participation are student-controlled behaviors; so any and all students have the opportunity to be fully successful, regardless of their ability level. The quality of any student s daily participation can be measured in the following five categories: Effort, Attitude, Sportsmanship, Attention, and Preparedness. For a detailed description of each of these areas see the document: The Five Components of Participation located on my website under class information. Everyone is expected to change into the PE Dept. specified P.E. clothes and participate in class activities every day unless ill or injured. If a student is ill or injured, a note from home will excuse him/her from some or all participation for that day. The instructor will exercise the best possible judgment as to the amount of participation permitted. Depending on the activities of the day, some form of participation may be possible. If a student must be excused from physical activity for more than three days in a row - a written excuse from a medical doctor

4 and check in with our health room before school. The note should state how long the student will be out and in which activities the student should be limited to. The following system will be used for unexcused non-participants and those who are not in appropriate PE clothes. A student is not allowed to participate unless he/she has changed. *First time: a loss of daily points and a warning *Second time: a loss of daily points and a 101 slip (not prepared for class) requiring a parent signature *Third time: a loss of daily points, 101 slip, a parent phone call, and referral to the V. Principal. MAKE-UPS Any excused absence or non-participation must be made up for credit and will be entered in the gradebook as a zero until the make-up assignments are complete and graded. Students have multiple options for make-ups that include: Outside PE Make Up activity (1-3 days missed due to excused absence) Sport PowerPoint Project (Extended injury/illness) The directions, instructions, and templates for these make ups can be accessed on my teacher website. GRADING Your grade in Physical Education will reflect your ability to meet the self-responsibility goals of the Level 4 Grading System criteria and the quality of your participation measured in 5 categories. This information is provided in two documents found on my website in class information under general documents. Each level in the Level 4 grading system corresponds with a point value. You earn 4 points per day recorded as a weekly grade (5 days) of 20 points. OFF CAMPUS ACTIVITIES On an occasion, classes will walk/jog on the surrounding pathways and sidewalks adjacent to campus, Challenger Elementary, and the King County Park. We are fortunate to have these areas to enhance the enjoyment of exercise and activities. PUNCTUALITY/TRUANCY Tardiness into the locker room for changing and/or the beginning of the class in the gym (squad lines) will be considered late and may result in a loss of a daily grade point. Multiple tardies may result in a 101 slip. Leaving the locker room early before class is over is truancy and will be dealt with accordingly. Everyone is expected to be in the locker room at the start of class and ready in 5 minutes to go to the gym. Being late to the gym and getting into your squad line is a tardy. Five minutes are allowed for changing at the end of the class.

5 PERSONAL HYGIENE Students are encouraged to keep a small towel (to dry off when it rains) and deodorant in their P.E. locker. Aerosol, glass, and spray perfume/cologne items are not allowed. Showers are not required. LOCKERS A small square locker and combination lock will be assigned for P.E. clothes and personal belongings. A tall locker is provided and must be used only during class time for school clothes. Use the lock to secure it. Do not leave the lock and belongings in a tall locker for more than your PE class period. You are required to use a school lock that has been issued to you and you are responsible for it. A lost lock must be paid for and then a new one will be issued. Locks from home are not to be used. All valuables should be left at home or in your hall locker. The school is not responsible for items not locked up. Please keep all items safe - use the lock!! Items that are found marked with identification can be returned to the student. SAFETY/ACCIDENTS Safety is an important aspect of the P.E. program at BLMS. All students are expected to contribute to a safe learning environment by following safety guidelines and using common sense. ALL accidents/injuries should be immediately reported to the instructor in charge. Students having an illness or an accident/injury arising at school may be sent to the school nurse/office. EQUIPMENT The equipment is highly durable and manufactured for excessive use. In the event a piece of equipment is broken or lost, notify the instructor immediately. If the equipment was broken due to the improper use by the student, he/she may be responsible for the item. Print the below form (page 4 only), sign it, and return. We have read the syllabus and discussed the Physical Education guidelines and expectations. I give permission for my child to participate in off campus activities as noted in the syllabus.
