Assessment Report Physical Education Part I Assessment SUMMARY (AY2006) A. Program/Discipline Mission Statement Mission: To provide accessible, pertinent, and current health and fitness education for all students by instilling the values of physical activity, and promoting the practice of health related fitness components during activity. Purpose: Knowledge and use of these health related fitness components will enable a lifetime of physical, mental, and emotional health and well being. B. Intended Outcomes 1. Students will exercise for the proper amount of time, and at the proper exertion level, to achieve cardiovascular/cardiorespiratory fitness. 2. Students will execute proper stretching techniques to improve overall flexibility. 3. Students will improve muscular strength and endurance through controlled strength training sessions following specified sets and repetitions of exercises. C. Benchmarks No outcomes were identified in Consequently, there are no benchmarks from to use for comparison. D. Assessment Results 1. Historical Context No assessment was carried out in academic year due to the uncertainty of the continued offering/requirement of a physical education credit, as well as the uncertainty of the continued existence of the Fitness Center and Swimming Pool for an educational setting for physical education for ACC students and Police Academy students. Prior to the academic year, there was a change in the directorship of the Fitness Center and the Physical Education department, and no assessment was carried out in earlier years Physical Education Assessment: 06S 07P Page 1
Currently, the plan is to see what progress is being made by students in the: PED110, PED111, PED210, and PED211 Life Fitness classes in order to assess the effectiveness of how the class is conducted and administered since these classes are arrangement type classes Physical Education Assessment: 06S 07P Page 2

3. Analysis Comparison with Benchmarks Students will exercise for the proper amount of time, and at the proper exertion level, to achieve cardiovascular/ cardiorespiratory fitness. The benchmark of 80% of students retesting will improve on at least 3 of the 5 fitness evaluation components is measured by the percentage of student improvement for the Cardiovascular component. Student improvement occurred at an overall level of 54.4% in this area. This is the lowest percentage of all 5 components when examining student progress. Interestingly, it was revealed that when comparing male/female progress, females improved more and males regressed more from the beginning assessment in this area. 1. Students will execute proper stretching techniques to improve overall flexibility. The benchmark of 80% of students retesting will improve on at least 3 of the 5 fitness evaluation components is measured by the percentage of student improvement for the Flexibility component. Student improvement occurred at an overall level of 67.7% in this area. This is significant due to the fact that most individuals flexibility levels fall below average. Both male/female groups improved fairly equally, with the male group improving slightly more than the female group. 2. Students will improve muscular strength through controlled strength training sessions following specified sets and repetitions of exercises. The benchmark of 80% of students retesting will improve on at least 3 of the 5 fitness evaluation components is measured by the percentage of student improvement for the Muscular Strength component. Student improvement occurred at an overall level of 70.6% when combining Upper Body Strength and Leg Strength results. Both male/female groups improved more in leg strength than in upper body strength. In counting raw numbers of students who improved, 53 or 68 that retested improved in at least 3 of the 5 categories, which is 77.9% Physical Education Assessment: 06S 07P Page 10
3. Students will improve muscular endurance through controlled strength training sessions following specified sets and repetitions of exercises. The benchmark of 80% of students retesting will improve on at least 3 of the 5 fitness evaluation components is measured by the percentage of student improvement for the Muscular Endurance component. Student improvement occurred at an overall level of 79.4% in this area. When comparing male/female groups, the female group improved more in this area than the male group. Comparison with previous year s data is not possible since no assessment has been conducted in the past. Discipline Strengths and Weaknesses Strengths include the following: 1. Complete pre assessment/testing at the orientation at the beginning of the semester to gather baseline data. 2. Flexibility of the workout arrangement for students to focus on areas identified as weak areas during the initial assessment. 3. Individualized help students can receive from the professional fitness center staff on duty at the time of a workout. 4. Individualized printout results from both the pre test and post test, and a comparison report printed for each student, which helps each identify strong or weak areas and suggestions on how to improve. Weaknesses include the following: 1. Few students retesting to determine progress achieved during the semester. 2. Few male students retesting compared to the number of female students testing, and compared to the overall number of male students enrolled in the course. 3. Low percentage of improvement in the cardiovascular/cardiorespiratory component area Physical Education Assessment: 06S 07P Page 11
E. Use of Results 1. Current year s results will be used to emphasize the fitness components in the following ways: Use the current year s statistics to illustrate the current success rate of students, and challenge the students to achieve higher levels of cardiovascular fitness by refining the aerobic circuit protocol during orientation sessions. Encourage all professional staff to work more closely with students as they follow the exercise routines to ensure proper exercise protocol for the circuit. Monitor training heart rate ranges during cardiovascular workouts to encourage proper exercise intensity. Reward students who are achieving higher levels of fitness based upon improvement in the 5 fitness components. 2. Use the current year s results to guide staff in the selection of periodic topics/presentations to provide for students in order to emphasize each component of fitness and to encourage a lifetime of fitness and wellness. 3. Provide intermediate assessment tools for students to use throughout the semester for continued feedback during the semester, as opposed to only a pre and post test. Part II Assessment Plan (AY2007) A. Intended Outcomes (revised from AY2006) 20% or more of students participating in the Life Fitness classes will retest on the 5 components of health related fitness as assessed in the Evaluation at orientation and also in a Re Evaluation. Students will exercise using the recommended amount of time and intensity to achieve improvement in the following areas, and at the desired percentage of improvement per category: 1. Cardiovascular fitness at an overall desired level of improvement of 60% or higher. 2. Flexibility at an overall desired level of improvement of 70% or higher 3. Muscular endurance at an overall desired level of improvement of 85% or higher Physical Education Assessment: 06S 07P Page 12
4. Muscular strength at an overall desired level of improvement of 75% or higher. Of the students retesting, 80% will improve in 3 or more of the 5 categories of health related fitness. B. Identify Assessment Procedures/Methods (same as AY2006) All students in PED 110 are assessed at the beginning of the semester during the Physical Education orientation class. These assessments cover the 5 components of health related fitness: 1. Cardiovascular fitness 2. Muscular strength 3. Muscular endurance 4. Flexibility 5. Body composition. The first means of assessment will be to re test the students who wish to be retested to show potential improvement in these 5 categories. The same tests and protocol for testing that will be used during the administering of the post test. A comparison will be made of the pre test results and the post test results. The second means of assessment will be to determine what percentages choose to be re evaluated to measure any improvement they may have accomplished. This will simply be a tabulation of how many pre tested, and then how many post tested, to give a measurable number of students that are concerned about their fitness levels and have desire for improvement. C. Benchmarks 35% or more of students participating in the Life Fitness classes will retest on the 5 components of health related fitness. Student improvement is desired at the percentages below, per assessment category: 1. Cardiovascular fitness at an overall desired level of improvement of 60% or higher. 2. Flexibility at an overall desired level of improvement of 70% or higher. 3. Muscular endurance at an overall desired level of improvement of 85% or higher. 4. Muscular strength at an overall desired level of improvement of 75% or higher. Of the students retesting, 80% will improve in 3 or more of the 5 categories of health related fitness Physical Education Assessment: 06S 07P Page 13
