2 EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN What exactly is an Emegency Action Plan (EAP)? It s a systematic pocess ideally completed pio to the stat of a spot season that maps out how to manage cisis situations and identifies chain of command duing each situation. It establishes policy and pocedues that fits the needs of a specific oganization. It nomally coves but not limited: Sudden Cadiac Aest Exetional Heat Stoke Bain and Neck Injuies Inclement Weathe ( i.e. lightening and heat index) Consensus statement ecently published in the Jounal of Athletic Taining titled The Inte-Association Task Foce Document on Emegency Health and Safety: Best Pactice Recommendations fo Youth Spots Leagues. This document is a geat place to stat when developing you oganizations EAP. Who wites the EAP? Youth Oganization Committee Medical Pesonnel (Athletic Taine, Physician, EMS, Nuse etc.) A epesentative fom the facility whee fields ae located A coach fom each age level and field location. Whee does it go? In you Fist Aid Kit and Coaches Bag On Youth Oganization Website In Paent Packets Stategic locations thoughout the site When should it be completed o updated? Should be completed pio to the stat of spots, eviewed yealy and afte each spot season How do you implement it o even get stated? Utilized the suggested documents you league has povided. Pactice the management of each policy and pocedue. Once the coaches feel comfotable they should then eview with the athletes as well as the paents. Why is an EAP impotant? When and if a catastophic injuy does happen eveyone will know how to eact and the focus will be placed on the appopiate steps to save the athletes life. It takes the guessing out of who, what, when, whee, and how.

8 FIRST AID ESSENTIALS In spots, injuies ae inevitable. Having a basic fist aid kit available can eally come in handy fo quick and effective elief of mino bumps and bangs. MUST HAVES: - Band-aids - White spots tape - Pe-wap - Gauze - Zip-loc bags (fo ice) - Non-latex gloves - ACE waps - Scissos - Hand sanitize - **Juice box if any diabetics** OTHER USEFUL ITEMS: - Insect Sting elief - Tiple antibiotic - Eye wash - Tweezes - Antiseptic wash - Multiple size bandaids (stips, knuckle, patch, 4-cone, bliste) - Mole skin - Electolyte tablets - Sun sceen - Tums - Chap stick WHERE TO FIND THESE PRODUCTS: Any local spoting good stoe Any geneal stoe ( CVS, Shop Rite, Walmat, Taget etc)
9 HEAT Condition Symptoms What to do Heat Camps Camping (usually in legs), flushed, moist skin Stop activity, est, move to cool aea, dink spots dinks (suga and salt is impotant) and wate, gently stetch camps Heat Exhaustion Heat Stoke Life Theatening Emegency Camping, pale, moist skin, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, feve Wam, dy skin, headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, apid head ate, seizue Stop activity, move to cool place, use cold towels, dink cool spots dinks, if unable to dink o no impovements, take to emegency oom immediately Move to cool place, call 911, emove excess clothes, use ice packs in goin and ampit, IF ALERT athlete may dink spots dinks Heat Illness Pevention: Acclimatize athletes in hot seasons Make sue athletes have plenty of wate and fluids available duing games and pactices Povide enough beaks duing games and pactices in elation to heat Go to a shaded aea duing beaks
10 LIGHTNING SAFETY If you see lightning, flee it. If you hea thunde, clea it. In geneal, a significant lightning theat extends outwad fom the base of a thundestom cloud about 6 to 10 miles. Whee should you go fo safety? Any lage stuctued building will make a good shelte. o Refe to safe locations in you EAP o Note that small outdoo buildings including dugouts, ain sheltes, sheds, etc., ae NOT SAFE. If a building is not available, a vehicle with closed windows will povide good potection. When should activity be esumed? Outdoo activities should be esumed 30mins afte the LAST thunde/lightning witnessed. Tacking thunde and lightning apps:
11 RETURN TO PLAY - CONCUSSION Once the athlete sustains a concussion, it is impotant fo them to be cleaed by a tained physician befoe etuning to activity. They cannot etun to spot unless: 1. You have a cleaance note fom a physician stating they ae able to etun to full activity. 2. They have completed Steps 1-3 pio to thei fist pactice. a. An example of this pocess is outlined below. i. Each step of this pocess should be done 1 day afte the last. If signs o symptoms etuning, the athlete should est until symptom fee, then etun to the pevious stage. If the athlete is unable to move past a step, they should etun to thei physician. It s impotant to emembe an athlete MUST have a FULL contact pactice pio to playing in a game. Step Execise Light Aeobic Activity Goal: Initial movement and incease heat ate Restictions: No jogging/unning; no esistance taining Activity: Stationay bike, walking, minutes total; Spot Specific Execise Goal: Add multidiectional movement, head movement; Restictions: No spinting, esistance taining, contact execises Activity: body weight execises; jogging; Non-Contact Taining Dills Goal: complex taining dills, coodination, cognition Restictions: NO CONTACT, no heading Activity: Running dills, footwok dills, cadio stations and agility dills; Begin Resistance Taining; Full Contact Pactice Goal: Restoe confidence and assess functional skills by coaching staff Restictions: Fist pactice back- allow beaks as needed Activity: nomal taining activity Game Day/ Continue full pactice Goal: integate athlete back into game play Restictions: None Activity: Game Play; If 6 th day is not on game day, continue with unesticted pactice.
