Pulse Activity Find your carotid artery and feel for your pulse. Count your pulse for 10 seconds Multiply that number that you got by 6, and that is your resting heart rate. Record this information on your guided notes. Normal Range Children and teenagers (ages 6-15) beats per minute Adults (age 18 and over) beats per minute
Pulse Activity Now, run in place for 30 seconds like you were trying to pass Hussein Bolt in a race! Then take your pulse for 10 seconds again as you did before and notice the change. Record your information on your notes.
Circulatory System Circulatory system- circulates blood through the body consisting of the heart and blood vessels. The system transports oxygen throughout the body and circulates carbon dioxide out of the body.
CFU Why is the circulatory system important? a) It produces hormones for the body b) It transports oxygen and nutrients in the body through the blood c) It is responsible for structure in the body d) It produces chemical/electrical signals to send messages to your body
What is the Flow of the Blood? There are two types of blood vessels (tubes that carry the blood) in the circulatory system. Arteries-vessels that carry oxygen rich blood away from the heart (arteries, blood flows away from the heart) Veins-vessel that carries oxygen poor blood to the heart. (veins, visit the heart) In the capillaries, the smallest veins and arteries meet and exchange oxygen, CO 2 and other nutrients.
How does the flow of blood work? The heart is a muscle (about the size of our fist), that acts like a pump causing the movement of the blood in the body. Oxygenated blood Deoxygenated blood
Anatomy of the Heart Hearts of mammals have 4 chambers. Here the anatomy of the human heart.
The Respiratory System Respiratory System - exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Made up of the lungs and airways, (trachea and alveoli).
How Does the Respiratory System Work? When you inhale, your diaphragm contracts (tightens) and moves down and your chest expands. This gives your lungs space to expand and sucks air in. Capillaries in the alveoli (tiny air sacks in the lungs) take the oxygen from the air, and release CO 2
Circulatory/Respiratory Working Together When you exhale, your diaphragm relaxes, forcing CO 2 out from your lungs, trachea (windpipe), and mouth or nose.
CFU The respiratory system and circulatory system: a) always work independently from one another b) work together to keep blood pumping to all parts of the body c) work together only when we are active, and never when we are resting or sleeping d) work together to deliver oxygen to cells and remove carbon dioxide from the body. See Notes for online lab
6.6 Muscular & Skeletal System 1. What are the structures of the Skeletal system? Muscular system? 2. How do you think the Skeletal system functions based on its structures? 3. How do you think the Muscular system functions based on its structures?
The Muscular System Allows the body to move Helps major organs work (Ex. stomach, uterus) Produces heat to maintain the body temperature when cold.
The Muscular System is made up of three types of organs: Skeletal muscle that help move your bones Smooth muscle form hollow muscular organs (Ex. Stomach, Bladder) and allow them to move Cardiac(heart) muscle pump blood throughout body.
The Skeletal System Supports body and gives it its shape Protects internal organs (Ex. heart, lungs) Produces red blood cells in bone marrow Help muscles move
Skeletal System Function Which would best explains how the following cells work together so the body maintains homeostasis? A. Bone cells allow for transportation of blood cells for keeping the organism warm B. Bone cells create new blood cells, and blood cells allow for gas exchange by transporting oxygen/co2 C. Blood cells provide bones with nutrients and help them become stronger D. Blood cells help the bones move and lift objects Bone Cells Blood Cells
The Skeletal System is made up of one organ: Bone, rigid organ two tissues: Ligament connect bone to bone Tendon connect bone to muscle many connections: Joint connection place of two bones
Turn & Talk 1min 1. What is the system made up of? 2. What is the difference between the tendon and the ligament based on the diagram?
Independent Practice Answer questions all question starting at Independent Practice Work must be done silently and independently. No Talking. If you have a question or request raise a silent hand and be patient. For independent practice, today we will be working silently and independently for 6 minutes.
Group Practice Review the questions answered during Independent practice. Go over each question. Each table member should explain why they selected their answer. Work must be done at a level ONE volume, which means I should not be able to hear you from my desk. Remain in your seat and only talk to people at your table. Make sure to keep conversations on topic. If you have a question or request raise a silent hand and be patient. For group practice, today we will be working for 10 minutes.
