1 American Herbalists Guild Mentor Directory 1 The following herbalists, professional members of the American Herbalists Guild, have expressed their willingness to participate in the mentorship program, furthering the ability of herbal students to gain access to clinical training experiences. The AHG in no way makes any specific referral to mentors, nor does the AHG take responsibility for any aspect or outcome of student-mentor relationships. 7 Song P.O. Box 6626 Ithaca, NY Background: Founder/Director of Northeast School of Botanical Medicine, 7Song has been informally practicing for over 20 years since beginning "formal" studies in 1983 at the California School of Herbal Studies. He attended classes and taught botany at the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine (Michael Moore), and has taught at numerous schools and conferences throughout the United States. A "diligent lay botanist," 7Song has gathered and prepared most of his herbal medicines (over 200). Prerequisites: Educational background must include "Herbology 101." Must have an understanding of differential diagnosis, including TCM (8 principles), Ayurveda, and specific indications (Eclectic). Must have a reasonable Materia Medica. Interest in gathering and preparation of plant medicines, and commitment to community-based herbalism are highly valued. 7Song would like to meet with prospective students for an in-depth interview in person, or by phone if necessary, to determine if there is a good fit. Areas of Specialty: "I look to mentor students in clinical herbalism with emphasis on botanical identification, wildcrafting, clinical first aid and trauma care, men's health care, and a focus on community herbalism. Diagnosis, constitutional evaluation, formulation and treatment are the crux of clinical herbalism along with educating our clients." 2 Chanchal Cabrera 3636 Trent Road Courtenay, BC V9N 9R Background: Chanchal has been a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists since 1987 and practices as a medical herbalist and clinical aromatherapist. She has served two consecutive terms as a council member of the AHG, with special responsibility for educational issues. She publishes widely in professional journals and lectures internationally on herbalism. Chanchal is associate editor of Medical Herbalism newsletter and serves on the board of advisors of Bastyr University and Dominion Herbal College and the board of directors of WellSprings Center for Natural Healing, a non-profit cancer and AIDS center. She is also the founder and coowner of Gaia Garden Herbal Dispensary, a full-service herbal store and clinic in Vancouver, BC. Prerequisites: Minimum of 3 years study of clinical herbalism or the equivalent. Students must attend a Clinical Herbalism Intensive (50 hours) at WellSprings Center (CT). It is also recommended that students attend a week-long intensive in clinical examination skills at DreamTime Center for Herbal Studies (VA) if this has not already been studied. Harder practices at 143 Northampton Street in Easton, Pennsylvania. His practice incorporates a system of formulation based on the herbal systems of Chinese and Western cultures. He also uses diet and nutrition to address his client s health concerns. He was graduated from David Winston s Herbal Therapeutics School of Botanical Medicine in 1992, studied with Michael Moore at the National College of Phototherapy and received nutritional training from Bastyr University. David and his wife Linda have owned and operated Nature s Way Market in Easton, PA since As an extension of his enthusiasm for the plant world he is a wild crafter, gardener, bee keeper, and photographer and has raised two healthy sons using herbs as medicine. Kerry H. Adams is a clinical herbalist and educator with over 30 years of experience and the founder of Herbally Yours Inc, in She is a 1993 graduate of David Winston s Center for Herbal Studies and currently an instructor for his two-year program. Kerry also graduated as a Charter Herbalist from Dominion Herbal College, Burnaby B.C. She is an Adjunct Professor at the Tufts University School of Medicine, and has a busy practice out of her home in Marblehead and at AtlantiCare Hospital. Author of "A Practicing Herbalist" (1999). Prerequisites: Serious interest as a medicinal practitioner. Must have served in an apprenticeship with 1-2 practicing herbalists or comparable study. A gifted teacher, he has lectured on natural healing throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia. Besides herbs, his specialties include iridology, muscle response testing, energetics, and emotional healing. Prerequisites: Students must have training in the Tree of Life Institute's Four Elements Model, iridology, tongue and pulse diagnosis, glandular body typing, and applied kineseology prior to mentorship. He is currently the director of the Professional Herbalists Training Program in St. Petersburg, founder of Acupuncture & Herbal Therapies, a clinical herbalist and acupuncturist, supervisor of the student herbal intern clinic, the president of the Florida Chapter of AHG and the creator of PACO (Pinellas Acupuncturists Co-Operative.
