1 Kansas Lions District 17-A Carleen Rajala, District Governor Shawnee Lions Club (h) /(c) September 2015 Volume 1, Issue 3 Kansas Lions District 17-A Spirit & Service Report A MESSAGE FROM DISTRICT GOVERNOR LION CARLEEN RAJALA Never let it be said that Lions of 17-A do the same old thing time after time. Notice the variety of activities from all over our district. We are preserving Dignity, creating Harmony and serving Humanity with creative ideas and interesting partnerships. Read on and be inspired!! Abilene Lions start every meeting shaking the hands of fellow Lions. Salina Sunflower Lions team up with the Assaria Lions to earn money by counting the number of certain types of vehicles that travel the inter-state on a given week-end. Clay Center supports a youth recreation program by purchasing T-shirts for participants. Wetmore Lions have taken recycling to a new level by using a semi-trailer. Hiawatha Lions support the local school by sponsoring a New Teachers Breakfast. Minneapolis Evening Lions don t worry about a lack of chickens for a Chicken Plop, they sponsor Cow Patty Bingo instead. Holton Lions prepare and serve a meal at the Sheriff s summer youth camp. Olathe Noon Lions furnish large print books for the library. Leavenworth Lions assist with the annual Buffalo Bill Day s Outhouse Race. Salina Noon Lions manage a local blood drive. Wakefield Lions sponsor a free community meal and also a teen dance. Brookville Ell Saline Lions enlist the help of the fire dept. and families to sponsor the annual Haunted House. Topeka Sunflower Lions earn money by working concessions at a sports park. Auburn Lions collect school supplies by sponsoring an ice cream social. I have to admit that one of my favorite activities is a new Junction City Lions drive to collect spaghetti, purchase local hot dogs and personally serve a meal to youth in the Phillipines. They have truly listened to Dr. Yamada s request that Lions reach out and help children of the world! 3 ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE? The Centennial Service Challenge Goal is to serve 100 million people by June As of July 16, 2015, 42 million people have been served: Youth 16M, Vision 7M, Hunger 8M and Environment 11M. These stats are updated weekly for all LIONS to view on To assist with the counting process, all club secretary s are being asked to report your clubs youth, vision, hunger, and environment projects in MYLCI service activities. Most clubs in our district completes at least 3 out of the 4 initiatives, so keep up the great work, and step outside of what you have always done and try a new project. Teamwork is of utmost importance. Along with completion of the four initiatives come recognition banners for those clubs who successfully complete their projects within the timeline given. Each club is eligible to receive four banners. All are different and distinct to each year of accomplishment. Download the information from the Lions Club International website and share with your club members. Knowledge is Power. In the next several months most, if not all, clubs will be participating in vision screenings in the local schools of their community. In November, many clubs will begin their hunger projects, and in the spring clubs will begin work on their environmental projects. If your club is looking for new/different projects related to the four initiatives go to the Lions Club International website. You will find projects listed that may inspire you to consider replacing what you have always done. As mentioned above, you may want to implement a new project it will energize and motivate YOU. Your leadership is the key. The logo below really identifies LIONS across the world: Where There s A Need, There s a LION. A single act of service can change a life. Together, all 1.4 million LIONS, we can change the world. Are you ready? If As in years past, the Kansas Lions you look ahead at the calendar, Sight Foundation will ask Governor Brownback to proclaim that you will see that both October 8 week as Kansas Lions Sight Week. Any activities that your club plans during that week can use the governor s proclamation as part of your publicity. There are White Can Day resources on the LCI website as well as other places that can be found on the internet. These and October 15 fall on Thursdays, resources provide a way to convert and you may consider it a little odd from the old Candy Day to a White to have Sight Week beginning and Cane Day. Other activities that ending on those dates. There is a might be planned during this week reason! October 8 is designated as are a drive to collect used eyeglasses or a vision screening activity. World Sight Day (a worldwide recognition) and October 15 is The creativity of Kansas Lions will White Cane Day (observed mainly undoubtedly result in many different ways to serve during this week. in the United States). 5 CHILDREN HELP WITH EYEGLASSES Grandchildren of Past District Governor David Hentges and Lion Diane Hentges of the Kansas City, Kansas Downtown Lions Club help to count and sort collected eyeglasses. Pictured are Nathan, Audrey and Leo. More than 300 pairs of eyeglasses were received at the first District 17-A Cabinet Meeting held in Junction City, August 20. (Photo courtesy of Diane Hentges) LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL CODE OF ETHICS To Show my faith in worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit reputation for quality service. To Seek success and demand fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to not accept profit or success at the price of lost selfrespect due to unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part. SIGHT WEEK, CONTINUED As a point of information: The Kansas Lions Sight Foundation has voted to discontinue focus on Candy Days because the cost of Lions candy through private vendors has become prohibitive. District 17-A has a limited supply of fruit-flavored and peppermint sugar free candies. If you would like to purchase a case of either of these types of candy, please contact Lion Beverly Nichols at taximath@aol.com. Funds that have been raised through Candy Day efforts go to the KU Department of Ophthalmology, and it is important that Lions continue to provide support through some fund raising mechanism, even though Candy Day as such may be phased out. News in Brief Does your club have a project that you need some help with? Then, you need the Miami County traveling Lions Club. Send your request to: miamicountytraveling@outlook.com (this is a special address for RE- QUESTs ONLY do not send any other correspondence to this address). Kansas Lions directories are now available. All Past District Governors, Cabinet Members, Program Chairs, Club Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers should have their copies in hand by the end of September. Please contact DG Carleen Rajala if you do not have one by October 1. Extra directories are $3 each. Topeka Sunflower Pancake Breakfast will be held October 24, 7-11 a.m., Highland Park United Methodist Church, 29th & Michigan. Cost is $6. Free vision screening will be available for all. Proceeds benefit vision projects. To Remember in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another s; to be loyal to my clients/customers and true to myself. Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself. To Hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given. Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, state, and community, and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means. To Aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy. To Be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy 5
