1 Journey's Journal SEPTEMBER 2018, VOLUME 4 Volunteering with US Hello All! What a wonderful three months it has been since the last newsletter! Several things have happened since we last connected. This newsletter will cover all of the events we have shared, all the up coming needs, and welcoming new members to the team! I hope everyone has had a great summer. I know the volunteer team has! Hospice of Chattanooga's volunteer department is always looking for new opportunities to grow in size and in activities! As coordinators, we are all working to recruit volunteers for all 600 of our patients! If you have any family or friends who would like to volunteer, Please send them our contact information. 2 J I M Z I D A N A Warm Welcome! We would like to welcome Jim Zidan to our hospice family. Jim is a new Volunteer Coordinator with the Mountain View team. Jim comes to us after spending the past thirty years working in a local church. Jim spent a lot of his free time volunteering for different organizations and received the volunteer of the year award in Jim has a lovely family including a wife and four children. There is a time for the traditional medical care model and then there is an appropriate time for hospice care. I love being a part of the process of informing people of the unique opportunities and benefits of hospice care. I believe in hospice care and I am excited to be a part of helping people learn about and utilize this tremendous resource. In my new role I am excited to help people; give back, volunteer, and actually become a vital part of our community s hospice care team.

4 Lunch and Learn Volunteer Events! July 10th Hospice of Chattanooga's volunteer department provided a Lunch and Learn for our veteran volunteers. This luncheon was to help educate new volunteers and refresh the procedures for existing volunteers! The group enjoyed a nice lunch and a fun time learning veteran pinning procedures from Patty Parks and Jim Zidan. Up Coming Events and Volunteer Needs Hospice Care Center We have a need at the Hospice Care Center for either individuals or groups to adopt us 1 x month by bringing a meal or snacks. Since there are no vending machines here, it fills a great need for families visiting, especially those that are traveling from out of town. Please spread the word!!! For more information please contact Julie_devlin@hospiceofchattanooga.org Heart to Heart Touch Program When you think I am asleep, your gentle loving touch has taken me to a place of peace where my disease does not exist. Barbara, ALS patient A compassionate presence. A comforting touch. The essence of human connection. It seems so simple. Yet many are not sure how to deepen their connection with someone dying or experiencing pain. Our goal at Heart to Heart Touch is to facilitate more meaningful connections between caregivers and the dying. Compassionate, comforting touch can play an integral role in a patient's quality of life by easing depression, anxiety and the individual's perception of pain. If you would like to become a volunteer with this training please contact Pam Dent: ; there is a fee, however, scholarships may be available.
