St Patrick s Day and my grandmother. Now you say, what does one have to do with the other? St Patrick s Day brings me back to my roots and thoughts of my grandmother and her trip to America. My grandmother was born in County Waterford, Ireland in 1898 and, at the young age of 16, she embarked on the trip of a lifetime. She boarded a ship with all of her belongings in a steamer trunk. As a young adult, my grandmother gave me that trunk and today, as I sit and write about her, I have so many questions: What was in that trunk? ow did you decide what you would bring with you to America? Were you coming for a visit or did you plan on coming to live in America? ow many days did it take to arrive on American soil? Was someone there to meet you at Ellis Island when you arrived? ow did you get to Butte? So many questions that I don t have answers for! I have asked my mother some of these questions and sadly she didn t have all of the answers either. It reminds me of how precious memories are and how important it is to document those memories as they are an important part of who we are. March 2018 I can still hear my grandmother s voice in my head today, as I loved listening to her talk. As faint as it may have been after all her years of living in America there was still something warm and magical about her Irish Brogue. I only wish now that I had asked all of those questions and more. hese thoughts that have come flooding back are a reminder that each of you should share stories and information about your lives with your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Let them video or record you telling stories of your life. Some day they will be so thankful they did. It s hard to forget someone who gave us so much to remember. 6 7 aving the Conversation Neighborhood Irene celebrated her 101st birthday in fashion! appy our with Dan Battleson. Losing the independence driving provides can be upsetting. It is important to acknowledge a person s feelings and preserve his or her independence, while ensuring the person s safety and the safety of others. Starting the conversation: Initiate dialogue to express your concerns. Stress the positive and offer alternatives. Address resistance while reaffirming your unconditional love and support. Appeal to the person s sense of responsibility. Reinforce medical diagnoses and directives. Ask the physician to write a letter stating that the person must not drive. Or ask the physician to write a prescription that says, No driving. You can then use the letter or prescription to reinforce the conversation. Consider an evaluation by an objective third party. Understand that this may be the first of many conversations about driving. When the conversation does not go well: Some people give up driving easily, but for others this transition can be difficult. Be prepared for the person to become angry with you, due to the memory and insight issues that are part of Alzheimer s. Be patient and firm. Demonstrate understanding and empathy. Acknowledge the pain of this change and appeal to the person s desire to act responsibly. Ask a respected family authority figure or your attorney to reinforce the message about not driving. If the conversation does not go well, do not blame yourself. he disease can impair insight and judgment, making it difficult for people to understand that their driving is no longer safe. Also, the disease can cause mood and personality changes that make reactions more pronounced. As a last resort, take away the car keys, disable the car or remove the car completely. When you do any of these things, be sure to provide safe, reliable alternative transportation.
