1 May 2018 Hello Residents, Families & Friends, I hope everyone is enjoying the start of this spring. We have an exciting and busy month ahead of us! Starting with National Nurses Week May 6th through May 12th, the Memorial Day holiday, and the start of our annual Live More Week, May 28th through June 1st, we are sure to be engaged throughout the month. I want to extend a thank you to all of our nurses for all they do everyday! Their dedication to their craft is a gift we are grateful for at The Hearth. We are very fortunate to have the care of these amazing Licensed and Registered Nurses. Thank you ladies and gentlemen for your compassion, dedication and caring! What would we ever do without you? Enclosed is the Live More Week specific calendar for you and your families to plan visits and event attendance accordingly. 2 Message from Marketing Happy Spring! This month in addition to our monthly Parkinson s and Alzheimer s support groups, we will be holding a Tea Party Honoring Mothers in the Café on May 10th, This is a way for us to show our appreciation to all the moms out there. We will also be hosting an educational session during Live More Week on Tuesday, May 29 th at 2:30pm in the Main Dining Room. The session will be facilitated by Patty O Brian, a Dementia Specialist at Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging. When someone has short term memory loss, their lives are made up of moments, making it challenging to create a wonderful day. In Patty s session, Creating Daily Moments of Success, she will provide care givers and family members tips and advice on how allow people with dementia to create wonderful moments and encourage them to enjoy those moments. Lastly, on Thursday, May 31st at 10:30am, we will be working with the activity department to assist residents in making thank you cards for Glastonbury s First Responders. Later in the day, we will go deliver these hand made cards with a treat to give back to the community we call home. Wellness Tip from VP of Clinical Services A Little LIVE MORE in the Month of May! By Janet L. Haynes, RN Vice President of Clinical Services Brain Health is a hot topic seen in the news and in many advertisements on TV and social media today. The diagram, below left, illustrates the webbed intricacy how socialization, safety, nutrition, physical exercise, sleep, hydration, stress management, treatment of disease, and mental activity/stimulation are all tied together to obtain optimal brain health. You can definitely tell when you have not had enough sleep and/or adequate sleep that your brain function is sluggish or diminished. The reverse can be said when you perform physical activity your brain can feel sharper or more alert. Our Live More Philosophy closely aligns with brain health through a multi-faceted concept. As illustrated in the Live More Wheel, above right, when we address our spirituality and emotional needs, engage in socialization, have good nutrition, get physical activity and address our environment, vocational and intellectual needs, we will have better over-all health while Living More. Come join us at The Hearth, starting May 27 th for a fun filled week of events to celebrate Live More and National Senior Health and Fitness Day on Wednesday, May 30th. Different activities and sessions will be held for residents and staff to learn, have fun and participate in some friendly competitions. While Riekle joined our Hearth family only a few months ago, she has demonstrated her compassion for our residents and guests in the way she serves each meal with a smile, going out of her way to meet requests. We are very lucky to have her as a part of our Hearth team and family. Here s to you Riekle for all that you do! Thank you! Page 3

4 Community Updates The Hearth s annual Live More Week will be this month, May 28th through June 1st. There are a variety of additional activities planned each day for residents, families, staff, and guests. Each of these activity programs represents one or more of the areas on the Hearth s Live More Wheel. In this Newsletter you will find a weekly calendar with the specific date, time, location, and name of the activity taking place. If you have any questions please refer to the activity department. Monday morning we will kick off the week and celebrate memorial day with a visit from the Glastonbury Eagle Scouts at 10:30am. They will lead us in saying the Pledge of Allegiance and then assist us with the proper retiring of the flag at the front entrance. Following, will be a Community wide BBQ from 11:301:30pm and we invite you and your families to attend. Be sure to wear something patriotic. Families and guests attending please RSVP to the front desk by 5/21/18! Wednesday is National Senior Health & Fitness Day. We will kick off the day with resident and staff Tai Chi in the courtyard followed by a healthy yogurt bar during lunch. There are 3 Olympic games scheduled to take place to compete against other Hearth communities. Each day, we are encouraging residents to compete in the NuStep challenge. The goal is to travel the most miles on the machine through the week. We will be giving prizes to the residents with the 3 top totals! Please see India, the Wellness Aide, with any questions. Other activities planned include an Omelet & Smoothie bar, card making to give back to our local first responders, learning about the history of ice cream (and then having some ice cream), a visiting petting zoo, and a craft to decorate our courtyards & gardens with Paula. We will close the week on Friday with a presentation by Frank from Connecticut s Notable Trees and then planting our own tree here on the facility in the spirit of living more! Friday at 3:00pm we will announce the Olympic game, nu-step challenge, and raffle winners followed by a social hour closing ceremony. Be sure that if you attend and participate in an event you receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of three exciting prizes. We hope you and your families are all as excited as we are!
