2 Goals Mission Statement To Promote and sustain the quality of life and resilience of Army National Guard children and youth by providing secure, timely, flexible, high quality, support services and enrichment programs. Our Youth, Our Lives, Our Future Infuse resilience standards into all programming. Provide life-skills education to children and youth of the Army National Guard. Provide equal access to federal and state benefits that support children and families such as counseling, education, childcare and other resources. Create opportunities for participation in programs and activities. Create an opportunity to network Build and sustain contact with military and civilian networks Master Resiliency Teen Training 38 youth trained in FY18 11 Skills Trained- Hunt the Good Stuff, Goal Setting, Activating Events, Thoughts Consequences (ATC), Energy Management, Avoiding Thinking Traps, Detecting Icebergs, Problem Solving, Put in in Perspective, Mental Games, Assertive Communication and Active Constructive Responding (ACR). 4 Events throughout the year, 3 Youth Leadership Forums and 1 Tween Training Event Hazel, one of our loyal volunteers, helps out at the Radom Acts of Kindness Event during RAK week! What did the AAR s Capture? Volunteers! The Connecticut Army National Guard Child and Youth Services had 223 gratuitous volunteers that assisted with 28 events this year totaling 1,123 hours of volunteer help! Having these volunteers afforded the Child and Youth Program to host larger events that support our families, which in turn provided an opportunity to provide important resources and making meaningful connections. The Child and Youth Program has provided such great opportunities for my children, they enjoy meeting other military kids who can relate to their situation. Having a place for them where they feel connected will help my husband continue out his mission with the CTARNG. - Mrs. Andrea Lathrop Spouse of SFC Jamison Lathrop Assertive communication will help when communicating with people. ACR was well received by many as they became aware they were not looking at their relationships. The social media portion of Assertive communication was given positive feedback because they felt it was relevant to their lives.
3 Community Partners The 1st Company Governor s Horse Guard has always been an important partner with the CT National Guard. We have worked together for several years, in recent years developing the Horses for Little Heroes club. This year we branch out a little more and had a mini equine camp! During this camp they taught military kids responsibility, compassion and equine education! The Hartford Wolf Pack is a New York Rangers Franchise player development affiliate local to Hartford and they continue to be a great partner here in the state. They come out to teach street hock to 3 day camps teaching the fundamentals of hockey to our youth. Additionally they host many events in support of our military families along with volunteering their time during the Holiday Season! Nourish My Soul is a new partner to the CT National Guard Youth Program for FY18. This organization is dedicated to improving the food system through community based agriculture, nutrition education and youth empowerment. Through their mission they received a grant to provide Jr. Chef Boot Camps for military youth across the state. Nourish my Soul provided 2 week long camps at no cost tor our military kids, empowering them to cook and make healthy choices! Resilience Grows Here (RGH) is a veteran s mental health initiative centered around a community garden that creates an environment that builds and supports relationships between veterans and families, while building resilience. This year RGH wanted to do more with the youth of our Service Members and Veterans, it began with them coming to the Region 1 Youth Symposium to speak to the youth about how to tap into resiliency skills post high school graduation. Child & Youth Program 2018 At-A-Glance 20- Youth Council meetings 3- Yellow Ribbon Events providing programming and resource tables 4- Camps in Partnership with Channel 3 Kids Camp, (2)Jr. Chef Boot Camp and Camp Sloane 4- Large State-wide events (Resource tables): - Operation Embracing Lonely Families (E.L.F.) 4 Deployment Discovery Day Connecticut will be seeing an increase in deployments and it was important to have our military youth try to understand what deployment is so that they may better relate to their parent during deployment and also be made aware of the programs and resources available In partnership with the Airman and Family Readiness Program Manager we came up with the Deployment Discover Day event. Youth were placed in units with Commanders, experienced MREs, PT, and deployed to different areas on base, i.e. the fire house, a C-130, LMTV s all before returning home ot their parents complete with Welcome Home signs! JR. CHEF Boot Camp In FY18 the CTNG Child & Youth Program partnered with Nourish My Soul a local non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the food system through community based agriculture, nutrition education and youth empowerment. Nourish my Soul brought two week long camps to our military youth at not cost to them. During this camp, youth worked along side professional chef s and learned about the importance of home grown foods, healthy eating and cooking skills. Along with some friendly competition. This event culminated with a cooking competition similar to the show Chopped. Each youth working with their mentor Chef developed a healthy meal with mystery foods!
5 CT NATIONAL GUARD YOUTH COUNCIL (CYC) The CYC has been very busy this year! Connecticut has a very active council with 12 members that come together twice a month! In FY18 they were very hands on in the planning and execution of the Region 1 Youth Symposium. This was Connecticut s first year hosting and they were vital in the success of the training. Some of their accomplishments include putting their leadership and resiliency training in use by acting as youth mentors at two of the MCIT day camps and being a peer leaders at the Youth Leadership Forums. They led icebreakers and activities which helped them practice public speaking and leadership skills. Many of the CYC members have been through the full MRT curriculum and are very familiar with the skills, so this year they took on the role as a youth trainer. Training along side the LCYPC offering their knowledge as a youth who put their resiliency skills to the test. Finally, they have volunteer at many of our state wide programs and continue to work on raising awareness about military children in our state along with marketing the program. CYC talking to CT s Lieutenant Governor about the Program Youth Leadership Forums Quarterly Youth Leadership Forums (YLF) have been a great tool to reaching out to military youth across the state. Each YLF training objective is geared toward resiliency skills, leadership and life skills. By focusing on character strengths, goal setting, communication and other skills youth that participated in YLF will be prepared to develop into success young adults. The CYC plays and important role in the planning and executing of the YLF, they provide their input as to what skills we should train on. Additionally, members of the CYC lead an icebreaker or energizer that directly ties into the skills we are training. By having them be a part of the training process this helps build upon their public speaking and mentoring skills.
