2 Solo Night Come one come all!! A fantastic line up is planned for this year s Solo Night. We encourage everyone to come along and support those that are performing. We would like to ask for some baked goods even from those who can not attend the night. Please either bring to the MPC from 6.30pm or drop to Linda Lesslie at 7 Seymour Close, Wahroonga. International Tour 2019 time is running out to register! Don t miss out! Registrations are now open for the 2019 THS International Band Tour to the USA for all band students. This is going to be an amazing experience so register now so your child does not miss out! Position available BSG notes co-ordinator Hi everyone, It has come time for me to step down as notes co-ordinator and hand over the reigns to someone else! It s a really easy job. Collating relevant information from the committee and band managers. Updating the database at the start of the year (with the year 12 s leaving and new kids joining). 3 AGM. Tuesday 20 th November At this AGM the roles of President & Secretary will need to be filled. Please contact the current incumbents to find out more about the roles before the AGM. The Annual General Meeting of the THS Band Support Group will be held on Tuesday 20 November in the Staff Common Room. Drinks and nibbles will be provided from 7.00 pm for a 7.45 pm start to the meeting. All band families are asked to send along one parent representative to the AGM where reports for the year will be provided and discussion of plans for 2019 will take place. Please consider seriously taking on a role in the Band Support Group to continue to provide the great opportunities to your children that they have experienced to date-international Tours, Regional Tours, performance opportunities, master classes and development of their musical interests. Remember that many hands make light work and a program such as ours cannot be run by only a handful of volunteers. Your Children NEED YOU!!!!!! Have your children been enjoying the wonderful benefits of being a part of the Turramurra High School Band program this year? Making new friends from different classes and different year groups, developing their musical skills and interests, performing at interesting venues and travelling the country and the world?? For these opportunities to continue, evolve and improve we need new members of the Band Support Group!!! Please find below a more detailed description of all of the roles that make up our Band Support Group and think about how you can be involved. In short, the below two Executive positions need parents with the following strengths: PRESIDENT-this position is great for someone with good interpersonal skills, who is an organised person and who is enthusiastic about the band program at our school. 4 SECRETARY-this position would suit someone who is a good listener, an accurate record-keeper and who is prepared to send and receive s. Positions in brief: Please note: None of these positions is particularly onerous! The Exec: President: The president takes on overall organization and leadership of the BSG. This includes: overseeing all Committee activities on behalf of the BSG; chairing the monthly BSG meetings; liaising on band matters with Jeff Lambert (representing the school) and Mark Barnsley (our Band Master); preparing reports for BSG meetings and for the P&C; and representing the BSG at school functions. The President is someone who will get to know the parents of the band members and be available to answer questions they may have or direct them to the people who can answer them. This position is great for someone with good interpersonal skills, who is an organised person, and who is enthusiastic about the band program at our school Vice-President: Principle role is to support the President. Shares duties with the President (responsibilities are split as agreed). Prepares entries for festivals and eisteddfods for the bands. The Vice-President is responsible for spear-heading administration and organisation for events involving more than one band. In particular, for ensuring that festivals and eisteddfods are entered within time and that parents, band members and band managers are aware of the arrangements. Also, the Vice- President is historically responsible for organising the arrangements for the endof-year concert at Darling Harbour, encompassing all bands. From time to time the Vice-President will chair meetings and deal with committees. Once again, good interpersonal and organisational skills and a real enthusiasm for the band program are needed. Secretary: The Secretary is the minute taker at the monthly meetings, prepares agendas for meetings and deals with correspondence as appropriate. The Secretary is also the main point of communication for the Executive of the BSG in regard to the day to day running of the band program (primarily by )! This position would suit someone who is a good listener, an accurate record-keeper and who is prepared to send and receive s. Page 4 of 8

5 Non-Exec positions: Band Managers: The are the first point of contact for band members. Mangers communicate any relevant Band-specific information to the band via . They are available to assist when their band performs (or find a responsible parent to perform this role), including being responsible for music and hand-held percussion instruments, or organising the relevant band members. Possible organization of appropriate gigs for the band managed is encouraged! Band managers are also encouraged to attend BSG meetings so that their knowledge of gigs and performance opportunities is up-to-date. This is a great position for someone who is interested in the program and enthusiastic about supporting their child. Database and band notes co-ordinator: This person records all registrations at the beginning of the school year and maintains the membership database through the year. They assemble and distribute the Band Notes weekly. This is a great job for someone who works from home as the majority of the work is data entry and gathering of information. It is a chance to be involved and would suit someone with small children who stays at home. Publicity co-ordinator: The Publicity Co-ordinator seeks to raise the profile of the Band Program, both within the school community and externally (e.g. local newspapers). They act as a point of contact for the media. They also support the Vice-President and the band managers in finding and setting up performance opportunities. This is also a position which involves s and telephone calls and would suit a stay-at-home or working from home parent. Band camp and tour committees: These roles are specific to organising Band Camp (for years 7-9 generally), Regional Tour (annually) and the International Tour (once every 3 years or so!). Roles within these committees are varied and include organization, co-ordination, finance, fund raising etc etc. There is no ideal number of parents for these committees, but the more who are involved, the easier it is to get everything sorted out. It is not necessary for committee members to attend camp or tours, but it is essential that they be enthusiastic and supportive. Music Librarian and Instrument Coordinator: Responsible for ensuring that originals and copies of all the current music are up to date (what we can copy is strictly governed by copyright laws). Also ensures that the school s instruments are maintained and the instrument inventory is up to date. This is a job for someone with a penchant for administration and an orderly approach. It is a help but not essential if the person is familiar with band music and band instruments. It is also not essential for these tasks to be performed by the one person and in the past, that was the case. The position will also suit people who want to attend rehearsals and have close contact with the band members, but, once again, this is not mandatory.
