1 Mission & Goals The Women s Section has been a strong presence in CCCBA for over 25 years and welcomes men and women practicing in all areas of the law who work or live in Contra Costa County. The goal of the section is to further the advancement of women in the legal profession and the judiciary. To do so, the Section offers frequent networking opportunities, such as Power Lunches and happy hours, MCLE classes with notable and relevant speakers, and fundraising and community events, such as the Honorable Patricia Herron and Honorable Ellen James Scholarship, and an annual Awards Dinner. OCTOBER 2018 NEWSLETTER Welcome to the October 2018 Women s Section Newsletter! Thank you for taking time to learn about our upcoming events, awards, and members! ANNUAL AWARDS NIGHT DINNER Join us for a wonderful evening of food, awards, and education! Our annual dinner is October 18, 2018 at Scott s Seafood. We will announce the recipient or recipients of the Hon. Patricia Herron and Hon. Ellen James Scholarship and the Section will honor Audrey Gee as the recipient of the First Annual Outstanding Woman Lawyer Award! Our keynote speaker, Santa Clara Deputy District Attorney Alaleh Kiarnerci, was the prosecutor in the high-profile Brock Turner rape case. Among other things, DA Kiarnerci will discuss gender inequity in relation to the media, victim blaming, and criminal sentencing in that ground-breaking prosecution, as well as the importance of leadership supporting and championing women. This promises to be a dynamic and engaging MCLE!

Power Lunch Tender Greens, 1352 Locust St., Walnut Creek November 13 th 12:00PM 1:30PM MCLE Spectacular The Women s Section, in connection with the Tax Section, is cosponsoring a program titled: Demystifying Tax and Business Issues for Women Entrepreneurs and Lawyers. This dynamic program will be led by Christina Weed of Mendes Weed, LLP and Robin Pearson of Pearson & Schachter. The program will consist of a 2018 Tax Update and discussion of business and tax issues that women lawyers should be aware of Research shows that approximately 80 90% of women will be solely responsible for their finances at some point in their lives. Many women, however, report lower levels of financial/tax/business knowledge confidence than men. Women lawyers/business owners have the added stress of running their law firm. This program will summarize the new tax changes, how they affect individuals and law firm owners and discuss some of the top business and tax issues you should be aware of. Courtney O Brien, John Burke, and Carol Healey of Bishop Barry, PC represent Rudolph and Sletten, Inc. (R&S) and filed a demurrer on R&S s behalf which the Court of Appeal, First Appellate District, recently sustained in Allen & Pamela Rudolph v. Rudolph & Sletter, Inc., agreeing with the trial court that plaintiff s complaint against his employer for mesothelioma injuries was covered by workers compensation, and his separate exposure at home did not create a separate injury outside workers compensation coverage. The contribution of plaintiff s home exposure to asbestos by the same employer prior to his employment did not create a divisible, separate injury and thus plaintiffs complaint was barred by the Worker s Compensation Act.
