We are happy to inform you that the 14th International Workshop on Campylobacter, Helicobacter and Related Organisms (CHRO2007) is scheduled for September 2 nd - 5 th, 2007, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The structure of CHRO2007 is set with 9 plenary lectures, 8 thematic symposia, and two interactive workshops. Besides the traditional opening reception on the first evening, there will be the conference dinner on the second evening and a social program on the last evening to meet your friends and colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere. Rotterdam is the largest port in the world, the second largest city and the industrial heart of The Netherlands. The city is the economic, social and cultural center of the Rijnmond ( Rhine Estuary ) region. Rotterdam is also well known for its contemporary architecture, events, leisure and recreation. More than one million people from 162 countries live in the Rotterdam region. The venue of the meeting is a top location, the Beurs-World Trade Center Rotterdam. The city of Rotterdam has its own airport with connections to many European cities. Rotterdam can easily be reached from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, by a 45 minutes train ride. 10 Satellite meetings Several satellite meetings will be organized before or after CHRO2007. Please check the website ( for an overview and up-to-date information. Workshops CHRO2007 The meeting will feature two interactive workshops, aimed at discussing recent developments. Workshop chairs and the scientific committee will select participants in the debate from oral and poster presentations, who will be invited to plead for or against a thesis. What is (not) known, what is controversial, how to proceed? The audience will be invited to actively participate in the discussions. Two topics have been selected for the workshops: Workshop 1: Full-scale interventions to control campylobacteriosis In recent years, different countries have implemented control programs to reduce the contamination of chicken meat with Campylobacter. The best known and probably best researched example is Iceland, but also countries such as Norway have made considerable efforts. Other sources of information may be natural experiments that temporarily reduce the supply of chicken meat such as the dioxin crisis in Belgium in 1999 or animal disease epidemics (e.g. avian influenza in The Netherlands in 2003). Interventions aimed at reducing exposure to Campylobacter by other sources than chicken meat are also of interest for the workshop. The workshop will also discuss the role of DNA fingerprinting in studying Campylobacter epidemiology. The goal of the workshop is to discuss the lessons that can be learned from such fullscale interventions, both the impact on the food chain and on public health. Workshop 2: Pathogenesis of post-infectious complications Helicobacter and Campylobacter infections have been associated with a variety of other diseases such as adenocarcinoma, MALT lymphoma, auto-immune based polyneuropathies and reactive arthritis. In recent years, the interaction of CHRO s with the innate and adaptive immune system has gained more attention. The role of molecular LPS mimicry, strain variation, the innate immune system and host variation as determinants of the post-infectious complications are of interest for the workshop. The goal of this workshop is to discuss progress that has been made in this area and its consequences for diagnostics, epidemiology and vaccine development, to separate facts and fantasy, and to identify future research trends.

14 General Information Location The conference will be held in the Beurs-World Trade Center, located in the heart of the city of Rotterdam next to the city hall and is easily accessible. The building has its own metro station Beurs, only 2 stops from the central railway station. Beurs-World Trade Center is a modern building with a historical past that dates back to 1598, when the first Rotterdam Beurs (stock exchange) was founded. In 1941, the Beurs on the Coolsingel was opened. This building, with its many functions, housed not only numerous exchanges, but also shops, conference halls, a bar and offices. Grants European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) supports CHRO2007 by making a number of grants available to young researchers (born 1967 or later) working in the field of Campylobacter. The grant covers the registration fee. Applicants should send an application letter (ESCMID members should indicate their membership number) and their CV (including list of publication) to the conference secretariat by latest May 1 st, If we receive too many applications preference is given to ESCMID members. Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) supports CHRO2007 by making a number of grants available to young researchers (younger than 36 year at the closing day of the meeting) working as microbiologists.
