NHS: Taking steps toward LEADING the world! Southland College Prep Charter High School Volume 7, Issue 1 National Honor Society Summer Newsletter Contact Us: Reporter- angelica.ferguson@yahoo.com NHS Advisor- Bwales@scphs.org NHS Asst. Advisor- Ebartley@scphs.org NHS s Groundbreaking Summer Our members were not afraid to use a little bit of elbow grease this summer! During the summer season many of our members volunteered for the Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that assists in building homes for those who are less fortunate. While volunteering, Delisa, Jayden, Jordan, and Kené dug up trash to clean the areas to assure the community was a clean and clear environment.
Kitty Care with Olivia This summer, Olivia was not afraid to go volunteer with her cuddly friends. At the South Suburban Humane Society, located in Chicago Heights, IL, many volunteers have the opportunity to get to know some of the animals and care for them. Olivia got a chance to build relationships with numerous animals at the shelter. With this fostering bond, she was able to walk the dogs and be knowledgeable about each and every one of them. Along with the puppy play, she also committed to assisting with the cats. Although she stated that she is not fond of cats, she rose to the occasion and tackled it head on! Olivia didn t limit herself to handing out puppy chow. She decided to push herself outside of her comfort zone and try something new. This decision lead her to broaden her horizons and demonstrate a true leader never backs down from a challenge.
Ready. Set. Pack. Armanti makes an effort to feed senior citizens in poverty at an event hosted by the American Association of Retired People. Many volunteers came together to achieve one goal. An assembly line approach was used to efficiently produce numerous meals for elders in poverty. The stations consisted of scoopers, baggers, weighers, and sealers. After packing 48 meals to a box and various volunteers working for five 90-minute shifts, they reached their goal of packing 1 million meals for the elders. Who knew that you could pack 1,000,000 meals in a matter of hours? The man power shown through the service of all the volunteers justifies the reason why service is a highly valued pillar in the National Honors Society.
Pantry Frenzy Volunteering at a place that helps those in need is extremely beneficial to the organization, the community, and the volunteers involved. The Rich Township Food Pantry depends entirely on volunteers to package goods to be given out every Saturday morning. Janell, Malik, and Savannah were consistent volunteers this summer and made sure the Rich Township pantry received all of the assistance they needed!
Helping for Health Making a difference in your community can even consist of going to events where those who have served in the U.S. military are praised and the everyday citizens are informed. The Post Traumatic Stress Disorder event held by Chicago International Social Change Film Festival provided information for those who experience PTSD as well as other opportunities for them including the ability to get a service dog! Angelica assisted in making sure this even could happen to ensure that this event could be executed to its greatest potential.
S mores and More! A summer without a bond fire what is that? These girl scouts could not go on if it wasn t for their annual summer bond fire filled with joy and most importantly, smores. This event hosted by the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana could not be held if it was not for their beloved volunteers. Armanti worked to set up the bond fire and supervise the children to ensure that everyone was safe and happy. Although Armanti is not a girl scout, he still earned his badge because he clearly did a great job of ensuring happiness of the children!
Feeding Our Starving Children Once again, our members take extra steps to help feed those in need. Feed My Starving Children provides meals to children in developing countries that are not as fortunate to have a meal ready on the table everyday. Laniah and Trinity packed potato-w packs, packets specifically made from 6 to 12 months old infants. While volunteering, they were informed on the facility in Haiti. This organization not only helps to feed the people, but they also work to educate the people to give them opportunities to pursue a better life overall.
Zipping and zooming through the streets of Chicago is a great way to get exercise! The Lakefront Boulevard Tour hosted by the Active Transportation Alliance made that desired bike ride through the city possible. The ride consisted of 12, 22, and 32 miles routes. Each of these paths had many turns that needed on-course guidance. That is where many of the volunteers were needed. Janell and Angelica were Course Marshals that stood out on their assigned corners and directed the traffic to make sure the riders stayed on path. Carissa also volunteered back at the start and finish line with anything that was needed during the race. Overall, our members were a great help played and an essential role in keeping those bikers active!
