2 Our Mission / Diabetes Statistics The mission of the American Diabetes Association is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Diabetes is a leading contributor to heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, nervous system disease, complications of pregnancy, dental disease and amputations 23.6 million Americans have diabetes An additional 5.7 million Americans do not know they have diabetes At least 57 million people have pre-diabetes Diabetes continues to grow annually to pandemic proportions 1 in 3 children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime, and 1 in 2 minorities if present trends continue

3 Our Present Need for Sponsorship Without corporate and foundation support we could not: Fund research to find a cure for diabetes Have educational summer camps for children with diabetes. Because the annual costs to families with someone with diabetes are so expensive, we take on at least $300 per child on top of what the family pays to attend camp. Financial help is essential to support this important program. Implement diabetes education programs in the African American and Latino communities. We offer the programs free of charge to the community to help reduce the prevalence of the disease. Advocate for scientific research and for the rights of people with diabetes

10 Local Chicago Programs Part of your donations fund our local American Diabetes Association Program Services: Summer Camps provides children and teens with diabetes (ages 4-18) the opportunity to participate in recreational activities while developing independence and confidence in caring for their diabetes. Diabetes EXPO is everything you need to know about diabetes, its management and prevention under one roof. The upcoming FREE expo will be held in April of 2011 at Chicago s Navy Pier. Por tu Familia The program is a year-round diabetes information program for the Latino community. Workshops are conducted in Spanish and focus on the ABCs of diabetes, healthy meal preparation, and the link between heart disease and diabetes. African American Program This initiative features year-round programs for African Americans including Project POWER, Diabetes Days and Choose 2 Live. Workshops focus on exercise, nutrition, heart disease, obesity prevention, the ABCs of diabetes and neuropathy. Family Resource Network (FRN) is a parent-led community-based initiative providing opportunities for families to get information about diabetes and to support one another in managing diabetes everyday.
