Opportunity and potential are peaking, and there is freshness with the re-start. This year, I will be traveling abroad for the first time. In September I am flying to Prague, a city full of beauty, culture, and outstanding health care! The trip is part of my studies for the health care focused MBA program I am enrolled in. I plan to learn a thing or two and bring it back here, for all of us to enjoy. If you have any tips for successful travel to the European countries, feel free to stop by. I don t plan to make any resolutions this year perhaps I have accepted my imperfections. I am curious to know, what resolution did you plan that stuck? Do you have any? I ve yet to be successful past March in my attempts. 2 As we begin a new year, I would like to write about safety and fall prevention. According to the CDC, Nursing Notes 1 out 4 people over the age of 65 will fall 1 out 5 falls cause serious injury such as a broken bone or a head injury Each year, 2.8 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries. Falls can happen to the best of us and it also can be life changing. What can you do to prevent falling? Talk to your Doctor. Have your Doctor review your medications. Medications can cause side effects such as low blood pressure, dizziness, drop in blood pressure, coordination problems, vision problems, and muscle stiffness. Notify your Doctor if you are experiencing symptoms. Do strength and balance exercises- Ecumen offers instructed exercise classes three times a week. A Nustep is available to use as well. Take time to exercise. Exercise can make your legs stronger and improve your balance. Have your eyes checked. Yearly checkups are encouraged. Make your home safer. 3 This Valentine s Day we are offering to deliver a special valentine to your loved one. Valentines can be sent to anyone who lives or works at Ecumen Oaks or Pines. The valentine includes a single carnation, a mylar balloon and personalized note card. We are offering the Valentine s at the low cost of $8/each because we would like to see everyone receive a valentine! 5 Recreation Recap What a great quarter we have had! From trick or treaters, honoring our veterans, to our holiday party, it has been filled with excitement. During our Veteran s Day program, our local Quilts of Valor chapter honored our veteran s with locally handmade quilts. Each quilt different than the other. In the week before Thanksgiving, the staff and residents of Oaks & Pines participated in a food drive to benefit the McLeod County Food Shelf. Together we donated 118 pounds of food! We have much to be thankful for this holiday season. Our buildings have been filled with countless caroling groups spreading the holiday cheer to all. Our Annual Holiday Party occurred the weekend of December 9 th and 10 th. Special thanks to Santa for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit with our residents and family members, Benny s Meat Market for the donation of the pickled herring and to Hutchinson s McDonald s for donating the punch for all to enjoy. This year s holiday party was extra special through a generous donation honoring Ida Mae Kenning. This year, we have begun holding monthly free educations which are open to the public. Recently, we learned how to make apple pies Melanie Zelm (complete with samples), we educated with a Dementia Life Enrichment Supervisor Friends training and learned the basics of social media. Be
