4 FROM THE FIRST VICE-DISTRICT GOVERNOR Hello Fellow Lions, May is Recycle for Sight Month. Get your recyclables turned in and make your donation to Sight First. May 15 was the deadline for the Leo Club Officers and membership forms (Leo-72). It was also the deadline for sending in the PU101 s. We have most of the PU101 s. Those Clubs that have not, please send them to Lion Norman Drakes, P.O. Box 1195, Grand Bank, NL, A0E 1W0. The MD Convention in St. John s is now history. We had a good convention with D.G.E., 1st V.D.G. and 2nd V.D.G. training. It was a busy four days, but very informative. The get acquainted party took us back to the sixties where a lot of the male Lions all of a sudden had black hair again, the cigarettes stuck behind their ears, and their jeans rolled up. The ladies with the Can-Can skirts, white bobby socks and doing the jive, the Limbo and the Twist. A great time was had by all. Environment month is coming. Make sure we get our clean-up done and report it. The Diabetes Cavalcade is to be held in Bonavista June 12. Make plans to attend and bring your donation. See you there! Lion Morgan, DGE Lionism - Kindness in motion FROM THE 2ND VICE-DISTRICT GOVERNOR Lions, The first thing that I have to do is apologize for the May District Governor s Newsletter being so late this month. It was almost finished and then my computer played a trick on me losing the May 2011 newsletter and all the photos and reports that were sent to me. This is an abbreviated issue and if what you sent is not in this issue, please re-send it and I ll make sure it s in the next one. District Governor Elect Morgan has already explained that the Multiple District N Convention that was held in St. John s was a tremendous success. Aside from all the training I received, I most enjoyed meeting Lions from the other parts of MD-N P.E.I., New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and western Newfoundland and Labrador. All the participants in the schools had an opportunity to visit Government House and meet with Lieutenant Governor John Crosbie and Mrs. Crosbie. Past International Director Patti Hill took this opportunity to induct both of them as Lions. Pictures of this momentous occasion can be found on page 10 of the newsletter. Yours in Lionism, Lion Gail, VDGE

7 ATTENTION ALL LIONS At the Gander Convention I spoke to you about the Disaster Fund we are attempting to set up for emergencies that may occur in our District or our sister District N3. We are attempting to get clarification as to the right way to set up the account, whether it should be a FOUNDATION, TRUST Account or use the FOUNDATION account we already have. I have had some conversations with a number of people in that regard and at present I am looking for a legal opinion. Having said all that, we do have over $2000 already set aside in the District account ear marked for our fund. I suggested that for now any club who wishes to make a contribution to the District Disaster Fund can do so now just send your donation to the District. Cheques should be made out to Lions District N4 And in the area of your cheques at the bottom you can write in Disaster Fund then the CST will know what the cheque is for. I would urge you all to look at getting this started this year as it was at the direction of DG Lewis that this came into being so it would be nice to have the fund started during his year. REMEMBER we never know when another Igor might come along and cause a lot of damage. Let s check out our budgets and give what you can. It will all come in handy should an emergency occur. I thank you in advance for your assistance. Yours in Lionism Lion Sam PDG Sam Wells District Disaster Fund Chair

8 Hello Fellow Lions, Well, the end of the year is drawing near but before the year is over we have one more big Lions social function our Lions Diabetes Cavalcade. This year the Cavalcade is being hosted by the Bonavista Lions Club with the help of the rest of the clubs in their zone. The Cavalcade on Sunday, June 12 will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Fort Point Lions Club and continue on to Port Rexton, then to Port Union with a coffee break, then concluding at the Bonavista Lions club where there will be a lunch served. The big difference this year is the addition of the Meet and Greet dance the night before. At the Bonavista Lions Club on Saturday night, June 11, there will a Meet and Greet dance starting at 8:oo p.m. with finger foods and refreshments served. Also, the Bonavista Lions Club will be open on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. for any out-of-town guests arriving and needing directions to where they are booked to stay. Why not use this opportunity to get together with some old Lion friends before the year is over and, who knows, maybe meet some new Lions? Once again this year, the Clothesline truck will be attending the Cavalcade, so I would like to encourage everyone who is attending to please bring along some old clothing that you no longer need. What a great way to get rid of some old clothing and make room for a whole new summer wardrobe. Say goodbye to those old winter sweaters and say hello to those nice new summer shorts! A list of places to stay was picked up by all clubs, or a representative, at our last District Convention. If you need any help, the chairperson is Lion Alma Gough. Her phone number is , or you can Lion Sharon Keel at awkeel@msn.com or by phone at , or you can contact me at or mike_foot@hotmail.com. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE, and don t forget: DON T BE BLIND TO DIABETES. Lion Michael Foote District Diabetes Awareness Chairperson

11 DISTRICT LIONS ALERT COMMITTEE DISASTERS OCCUR: WHEN THEY DO PEOPLE NEED HELP For decades Lions have provided humanitarian assistance to people affected by disasters. The mission of the Lions ALERT Program is to provide Lions with a standardized structure and network to deliver needed services to people in emergency situations. There are three levels of emergency: A Level One emergency affects a few people. As a local emergency, a local response is needed. A house fire or localized flood may be an example of a Level One emergency. A single Lions club may provide the affected people with assistance and supplies such as drinking water, food shelter, or clothing. A Level Two emergency affects a larger geographical area. A tornado, hurricane or mudslide may be an example of a Level Two emergency. We have had a severe rainstorm in Placentia, an ice storm and hurricane Igor within the last two years. A coordinated District response may be necessary. At this level Governments and other response agencies such as our Red Cross may become involved in the relief effort as first responders. Stephenville received a grant from LCIF as a result of severe flooding. A Level three emergency affects hundreds or thousands of people. One or more Multiple Districts would need to become involved to provide aid for victims. All relief agencies such as Governments, Red Cross, even Lions International would need to become deeply involved. Examples of past emergencies are the earthquake in Haiti and hurricane Katrina. District Committee goals: 1. To explain the Alert Program to Lions 2. To help form an Alert Committee for each Club/Zone 3. To have a District Committee to communicate with Clubs, District and Multiple District Committees. 4. To contact other agencies who are well versed in disaster relief efforts so that Lions can assist in the overall relief effort 5. To become a resource when Clubs are creating an Alert Team 6. To help with organizing fund raisers for the three levels of emergencies Rewards to LIONS ALERT TEAM members: 1. Certificates of Appreciation 2. Lions Alert Banner Patch for any club/zone that submits a Lions Alert plan to LCI 3. Team members should wear Lions Alert Vest (Club Owned) Continued on page 12

12 Continued from page 11 Chair Lion Dave Arnott Vice PDG Lion Sam Parsons Lion Gerald Antle Lion Steve Hewlin Lion June Petten Lion Lloyd Andrews CBS Goulds Our Committee Members Mt. Pearl Pouch Cove Garnish Baccalieu At our last meeting we discussed the problems associated with hurricane Igor. Our communities and province were not prepared to deal with such an emergency. To deal with these situations, we have to better prepared, by making emergency plans. This is where Alert Committees may offer assistance. We can offer our building as emergency or command centers. Several Clubs in our District are designated for such a purpose. Clubs should have access to an alternate power supply such as a power generator, if it is used as a command center. We can offer our assistance to groups such as the Red Cross, Fire Departments and Police agencies. As we are affected by weather change, we can be assured of more frequent and severe weather. We can prepare for this by developing an emergency plan and having a 72 hour emergency kit available. Information is available on the internet for developing plans and compiling an emergency kit. Emergency kits will provide the basic necessities of food, water etc. to help us in the event we become isolated for a few days. Our main focus for the next few months: 1. To have each Club appoint an Alert Chair, hoping for 100% participation. To date we have only 6 chairpersons in place. 2. Each Club Chair or Club to appoint an Alert Committee by May Each Club to develop an emergency plan by Oct Our Lions District is in the process of forming an emergency fund. This may take a few years to build it up. This fund would be readily available to assist people in the event of an emergency. Many Lions Clubs have contributed to disaster appeals in the past. Lions Clubs and their family and friends would surely contribute to this type of fund. Sometimes it takes weeks and months before any funds are given to people affected by disasters. With our own fund and Alert Committees in place, we can suggest to our District Governor as to where funds may be distributed. At least we could provide the people in our communities with their basic needs. We are planning to have one Lion from every zone as part of the Alert Committee. This Lion will in contact with the clubs in their district in forming Alert teams. We need a Lion from Zones 1 to 6 to have every zone represented. Please put your name forward to be part of this very important committee. Also please support the Emergency Fund. My is davearnott@nl.rogers.com or telephone # Alert District Chair N4 Dave Arnott
