Box Phoenix, AZ Special Regional Conference Wrapup Issue President s Message by Sharon Brause, CPPB Aloha AZ-NIGP members, By the time this newsletter is issued, the 24 th annual Regional Conference & Vendor Exposition will have come and gone, and all the hard work by the committee members will just be a memory. I d like to take this time to personally thank the committee members Valarie Erwin, John & Jane Albin (lovingly renamed the A-Team ), Kristy Garcia, Mary Talerico, Irma Guzman, Bill Munch, Gary Barkman, Susanna Hernandez, Bertha Whitby, Sara Stravers, Heather Hodgman, Myrna Quihuis, Jess Romney, Vicki Fitzpatrick, Barbara Smith, Peggy Ferrin, Cheryl Rentscheler, and Angela Bennett. And special thanks to our adoptee, Rick Kahn, from Arizona Correction Industries for all his support. We had a tremendous turnout, both from our record number of registrants attending our training sessions (241) and visited our Product Expo to our walk-ins (87) that we were able to capture and took the time to sign-in so we know they came to visit with new and existing vendors. Both members and end-users showed up in record numbers!! Thank you everyone for encouraging your departments and staff members to support the product show after all, without the vendors there would be no show! And again special thanks to our Gold Sponsors for 2013 Plus6 Technologies and 1GPA, as well as our Silver Sponsors, and the other vendors who helped make this show a success. On a personal note because I know he THINKS he s retired I d like to thank John Albin for all his dedication and hard work in helping to make this a successful event for our Chapter. Because of his hard work, we have become one of the leading Chapters with regards to Regional Conferences and definitely Product Shows, and had attendees from out of state this year!! For the first time ever, we have 37 spaces already pre-sold for our 2014 Products Show. If I didn t think it would go to his head, I d tell him how very proud I was of him!! Our next training event is scheduled for November 19 th at the Edna Vihel Center in Tempe. We ll be co-hosting the White Paper seminar We No Bid and I ll Tell You Why session with the Grand Canyon Chapter, sponsored by the National NIGP Business Council. A lite lunch will be provided after the session. Please go to to register. There s no fee to attend for AZ-NIGP members, Grand Canyon Chapter (GCC) members, or members belonging to other chapters; however, there is a small fee if an NIGP member wishes to attend. Winding down 2013, we have our last opportunities to Pay it Forward to our community. On October 27 th, Valarie Erwin your incoming President is hosting a Walk for Autism-Team NIGP at the event being held at Tempe Beach Park. November 2 nd, our most ambitious volunteer, Steve Troxel, is still looking for more volunteers for his Team NIGP rest stop/water station (at Mill & Curry) for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) event. Continued on pg. 2 The Purchasing Exchange
2 President s Message continued from page 1 And between now and our Transitional Board meeting / Luncheon on December 10 th to be held at the Phoenix Airport Marriott, the Outreach Committee is collecting New Socks for Men & Women to be donated to the JustaCenter for homeless in downtown Phoenix. Cheryl Rentscheler and several other ladies visit this center on a monthly basis, wash their feet, and replace whatever was on them (if anything) with brand new socks. If you re unable to purchase socks, we will have our typical coffee bucket at the luncheon and will accept donations as well. Also has been our typical fashion for the past several years, we will be having a canned /dry food drive for a food bank on the Westside. We will have a local set up for donations at the December luncheon, as well, or you may contact Barbara Corella to coordinate pickup. Finally, on a more personal note, I would like to thank each and every one of you for trusting me enough to be worthy of serving as your President for two years. It has been a very rewarding experience for me, I ve made many new friends, changed employers (would like to sneak a happy retirement, boss in here), and had come be out of my comfort zone but I wouldn t trade any of it and I owe most of it to you, my fellow AZ-NIGP members. Thank you! As always, any comments or suggestions, please contact me or any of the other officers and we would be happy to listen. 4 Election of 2014 Executive Board Election of the 2014 Executive Board were held electronically in October. The results were announced at the Regional Conference on October 10, Congratulations to Irma Guzman of Maricopa County Purchasing for being elected as the Vice President of the Arizona State Capitol Chapter of NIGP. Joining Irma on the Executive Board pictured left to right are: returning as Treasurer, Kim Clark, advancing to President, Valarie Irwin, back row Sharon Brause now moving to Immediate Past President, Irma Guzman, Vice President and Re-elected as Treasurer, Gary Barkman. Community Outreach Events 2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes Sat, Nov 2, :00 AM - 6:00 PM Tempe Town Lake Attached is the Volunteer form for the 2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes event. If you re interested in volunteering, please contact our NIGP coordinator, Steve Troxel ( SteveTroxel@cox.net ) or Sharon Brause ( Sharon.Brause@MesaAz.gov ). It s important that you complete the form and get it back to us, as there is no listing on here for the rest stop / water stop we will be manning. You ll need to fill the form in and note on it that you are part of the Team NIGP group so that we all stay together. It works better when we re trying to take pictures for our AZNIGP website and Newsletter!! The course map lists the rest / water sites as a triangle, roughly located on Mill Ave where Washington (on the Phoenix side) and Curry Road (on the Tempe side) intersect almost directly across the street from the Marquee Theatre (there s a small park on the SE side). More details will be out shortly. In order to make this another successful volunteer event for AZNIGP, as well as to fulfill our duties, we need to have a minimum of 30 volunteers but as always, more is better. Any teens who need Volunteer Hours for high school or any older children who would be interested in helping are always welcome to join us. Note: if the teens need their volunteer hours signed off for school, please make sure they have their forms with them and one of the NIGP folks will sign off for them. Sign-up on our website here but it s also important that the form be completed and scanned/ ed to Steve Troxel and/or Sharon Bause in addition to registering on the AZNIGP website. Please make sure to list your contact phone # and somewhere on the documentation. Thank you in advance for helping AZNIGP pay it forward!! The Purchasing Exchange

We want to thank our sponsor vendors for their participation and support. Gold Sponsors, 1GPA sponsored our breakfast and Plus 6 Technologies sponsored our luncheon. Silver Sponsors, National IPA, A to Z Equipment Rentals and Sales, Waxie Sanitary Supply and Dave Ban Associates all sponsored our afternoon break snacks. Without the assistance of these sponsors, and participation of all vendors, our members would have had to pay a higher registration fee for this event. 18 October 18, 2013 AZNIGP Scholarship Committee & Board President PO Box 1466 Mesa,AZ Dear AZNIGP Scholarship Committee Members and Board President, Thank you for the AZNIGP scholarship recently awarded to me. This has been a great help in obtaining my CPPB. With the many demands placed on our day to day life, the costs associated with testing and educations sometimes weigh on our decisions to move forward. I was delighted when I was informed that AZNIGP had a scholarship system. That if I took the CPPB exam and successfully passed, there was a good chance of receiving an AZNIGP scholarship to offset the costs. Thank you for the opportunity. To my happy surprise, I was awarded the $600 scholarship which fully covered my fees for the application and the exam. I am grateful for the help and support that I have received from AZNIGP since I became a member 1.5 years ago. I find this to be a wonderful organization, filled with persons who are excited to mentor others and move forward the profession of Public Procurement. Everyone is warm and friendly. I cannot express enough how happy I am to have joined this organization. I would like to personally thank Mr. Bill Munch for encouraging me to join the organization, to thank Mr. Larry Larson for his encouragement to take the CPPB exam, and to thank Mrs. Teena Ziegler for being an excellent mentor and teacher of the CPPB Review classes. There were challenges in my life this past year, and at times I felt like postponing my testing. But with the encouragement of many of the AZNIGP members, I forged on and took the testing as planned. And I was delighted when I found out I passed! Having the CPPB certification has changed my life. I am received with a greater respect than I could have imagined. Although I had knowledge of my profession in the past, this Certification is the attestation to others of my Education and Experience. It is the ultimate acknowledgement of my competency in the public procurement profession and recognition by my peers. I am honored to be recognized by NIGP and UPPCC. Since receiving my certification,i have been acknowledged through my organizations news release and through the newspaper of the local community. I feel such pride to be a part of this great organization and hope to be of service to AZNIGP and to give back what I have received from my peers. I encourage all to apply for CPPB or CPPO. With this wonderful group of members, you will have all the support necessary to achieve your goals! Sincerely, Laura Szymanoski,CPPB Purchasing Administrator Dysart Unified School District The Purchasing Exchange

A must for all of us! A company s quality response to the bidding process says as much about the agency issuing the RFP/IFB (Request for Proposal/Invitation for Bids) as it does the supplier. If companies choose not to bid, is your agency and your constituents getting the best products and value? Join the NIGP Business Council as they present this engaging, thought-provoking, and enlightening topic through the combination of a presentation and round-table discussion. Retirements Katherine Babonis has retired from the State of Arizona after serving for 27 years. Katherine is a Past President of the Arizona State Capitol Chapter of NIGP.
