March 2016 Clubs can feel confident when they donate to LCIF as for the fourth consecutive year, Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator, recently awarded LCIF four stars, the highest ranking a charity can receive. Based in New Jersey, Charity Navigator evaluates the financial health, accountability and transparency of more than 8,000 charities to help donors be better informed about where they give. The rating confirms what many Lions already know LCIF is a great way to make a difference in the lives of people, says LCIF Chairperson Jo Preston. Our foundation is adept at maximizing the value of the donations it receives from Lions. Congratulations to Lions for serving 25 million youth! Since June 2014, over 23,000 Lions clubs have implemented more than 168,000 youth projects in response to the Engaging Our Youth Centennial Service Challenge. For the month of April, I encourage Lions to implement projects that improve your community and increase your club s visibility through the Protecting Our Environment Centennial Service Challenge. Planting trees, cleaning up a riverbank and hosting a community Earth Day celebration are all great ways to get noticed, meet potential new members and give back. Visit the Toolbox on Lions100.org for more project ideas and resources to start planning your environment project today! I left for my Club visits to Namibia, early on Tuesday 11 March, accompanied by Region Chair, Marius du Plessis. The long drive to our first overnight stop in Keetmanshoop took longer than expected due to 19 Stop & Go s on the South African side of the border. My first official duty was the induction of 3 new members into the Lions Club of Windhoek, Ami Sell, Vera Schatz and her husband Frantz, whose father was a Lion. After the training session in the morning, PCC Holger & Kenlis Sircoloumb treated Marius and I to lunch at Joe s Bar, a legendary Windhoek institution. A guest at the Zone 10 meeting in the evening, was Kurt Johanneson, a past Lion and Melvin Jones fellow. Then it was off to the coastal Clubs, where we were accommodated in style by Henties Bay President Pieter Erasmus and his wife Nauline. I inducted a new member, Wilma Liebenberg, into the Lions Club of Henties Bay in the evening. The following day, the Zone 11 meeting was followed by training, and a trip to Swakopmund with President Christie & Anne Mari Kruger who showed us the Lions Old Age Home. There was a social in the evening which included a presentation by Dr Philip Stander re Saving the Desert Lions. Our next stop was Grootfontein for the Zone 12 meeting, and the induction of Derreck Sherrat into the Lions Club of Tsumeb. Our last Lions stop was at Rehoboth with the re-induction of two ex-lions, Vera and Priscilla. We travelled 4,709 kilometres in ten days, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. The hospitality of the Lions Clubs in Namibia, is legendary, and they definitely lived up to their reputation. Thank you to you all, who made our trip so enjoyable. Page 1
Anyone who has travelled long distances with children will have played such games as I Spy, count the cars and other word games to while away the time. RC Marius and I were no different, particularly concerning language. English is considered one of the most difficult languages to learn. Why? Sometimes the word don t make sense. There is no ham in hamburger. Nor is there an apple or a pine in a pineapple. But one word that makes a lot of sense, especially as used by Lions, is foundation. The foundation of a home is the concrete or masonry that support it. Appropriately, foundation also means a fundamental principle, or supporting material or the base on which something rests. Our forebears made a wise choice in 1968 when they named our grant-making division, Lions Clubs International Foundation. This entity is indeed the man support of what Lions do. It embodies our fundamental principles. It s our sturdy, reliable base for Lions service. Please keep supporting it. 4 leditorial March 2016 It is most disappointing that clubs are not submitting articles for the newsletter. This is a DISTRICT newsletter and is not only for Cabinet Officers but for ALL clubs in the District to show case and share their projects with their fellow Lions. Dept of Useless Information *The word "queue" is the only word in the English language that is still pronounced the same way when the last four letters are removed. *The YKK on your zipper stands for Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikigaisha. The due date for submissions for the April newsletter will be 15 May The newsletter will be distributed before the end of the month. DG Sue has the right to edit articles and decide on what will be published (or not). 6 What an amazing membership growth month new Members! Well done and Congratulations to the Cape of Good Hope Lions Club who inducted 7 members what an achievement. You re Club, Your Way! Part 1 Customizing Your Club Meeting...You have a choice Freedom to structure club meeting. How do you design a meeting that appeals to members and prospective members who want to make a difference in their community, but have little time to commit? And how do you create a club atmosphere that is positive and inviting? You have a choice Your club has the freedom to structure club meetings in a way that best meets your members needs Most traditions are Optional. While many clubs value the traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation, it is good to know that most traditions are optional and members can chose to change the current operation of their club. Members can choose to change the elements, frequency and structure of their meetings to make the meeting more inviting and/or use new forms of technology to keep members connected and manage club business. And, if you find the term meeting unfriendly or boring, consider a new term like gathering or club event to bring energy and enthusiasm back to your club! Next month... General meeting types: Page 6
Centennial Report (PDG Paula) With 28 months left and 12M people served through vision projects, we are at the halfway point of the Centennial Service Challenge - congratulations! We are confident that Lions will achieve the goal of serving 25M people through vision projects by June 30 th, 2018, but only if everyone reports their projects to MyLCI. To ensure that we reach our goal, please see the examples below for tips on accurate reporting in MyLCI. Tip 1: Screenings: When Lions conduct screening activities, it is important to report the total number of people screened because everyone benefitted in some way, even if a referral was not necessary. For example, if 100 people were screened, all 100 should be reported. Tip 2: Lions clinics/foundations: Lions clinics and foundations offer vital eye care services on an ongoing basis. Remember to report the number served each month. For example, a large clinic that serves 3,000 people in the month of March should report all 3,000 people. Tip 3: LCIF funded projects: When Lions receive LCIF funding to implement sight-related projects, the number of people served each month through these projects should also be reported in MyLCI. In addition, Lions should continue to submit their detailed progress reports to LCIF staff. Together, we can reach our Centennial Service Challenge goal of serving 25 million through vision projects by June 30 th, Every club needs to process their service projects on a monthly basis. Vision is our core project yet Vision is reported as the least number of people served out of the four Service Challenges INTERNATIONAL CENTENNIAL SERVICE CHALLENGE BY THE NUMBERS AS AT END OF JANUARY ,147,069 Million People Served 24,998,864 people benefited through Engaging Our Youth 12,094,082 people benefited through Sharing the Vision 15,425,754 people benefited through Relieving the Hunger 19,628,369 people benefited through Protecting Our Environment 56% of clubs are engaged in the Centennial Service Challenge 93,110 Sharing the Vision projects completed 2,032,335 trees planted through the Protecting Our Environment campaign 47% of clubs have implemented an Engaging Our Youth project 16,782 communities positively impacted through Relieving the Hunger projects Page 7
LCIF CHAIRPERSON IPDG MOIRA THERON LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION (LCIF) EMBRACING THE SPIRIT OF SERVICE by contributing to our Foundation! Although we are four months off the end of the 2015/2016 year I wish to remind those clubs who pledged donations to LCIF (see below) at the MYC, that they need to settle their commitment before the upcoming District Convention in Ballito in May. Cape of Good Hope - R1000 Durbanville - R1000 Malgas - R1000 Malmesbury - R1000 Merriman - US$754 Newlands - R10,000 Wellington - R1000 Windhoek Alte Feste - US$500 According to the latest statistics from LCIF, 19 clubs out of a total of 45 in District 410A have contributed a total of $3,949. I look forward to receiving the above pledges in order to improve upon this figure and ask the remaining 18 clubs who have either not pledged or contributed, to please consider donating to our foundation. Once again, I remind club members and Lion Presidents around our District to start giving thought to their year end club awards, by way of: The Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF):Recognizes donations of US$1,000. It is the backbone of LCIF, providing 75 percent of the foundation's revenue. As recognition of humanitarian work, an MJF is an honor presented to those who donate US$1,000 to LCIF or to people for whom a donation was made by others. Honor Roll: The LCIF Honor Roll recognizes individuals who donate US$100 or in whose name a donation was made. Recipients receive an Honor Roll Certificate and their names are added to the Honor Roll at International Headquarters. Clubs may consider their club President for the Honor Roll or clubs may get together and consider their Zone Chairperson. District Certificate of Appreciation: Districts in which every club donates to LCIF in a fiscal year receive a Certificate of Appreciation. The District Governor and LCIF District Coordinator also receive a certificate. Page 8

Club News Gordons Bay Club INTERNATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST PRIZE WINNER JOEL GREEK SPONSORED BY THE LIONS CLUB OF GORDON S BAY. Visually impaired SA boy beats odds to win writing competition A 12-year-old boy from Kuils River who has spent his life in and out of hospitals has beaten the odds to win an international writing competition that will see him going on his first overseas trip. Joel Greek s 500-word essay on the topic of Share Peace was picked over entries from children in about 100 other countries. The event was organised by Lions Clubs International, an organisation that focuses on working with visually impaired people. The bright and history-loving boy, who is blind in one eye, wrote his essay in just one day. Joel has optic glaucoma, a degenerative condition that was a result of a brain tumour when he was just 6 months old and saw him go for chemotherapy. Due to delays acquiring their passports and visa s Joel his mother Inge and Barbara Davis school coordinator arrived in New York on Friday 11 th March 2016 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel while Lions guests were enjoying a welcome drink. We had to be ready the next morning for the bus leaving from the hotel for the UN Building at Joel had to read a portion of his essay to the delegates, he confidently thanked Lions Clubs International and at the end added a quote from Martin Luther King to the delight of the 750 delegates present and received a standing ovation. On his arrival on the 15 th March in Cape Town he received a huge welcome by +_ 60 pupils from his school, teachers and principal also present was Tanya Nefdt and a photographer from the ENCA news that interviewed the school principal and myself, Joel and his mother was also interviewed, watch out for the ENCA news perhaps on the 16, or 17 th March. Paula and I were truly privileged and honoured to accompany Joel and to attend the Lions Day at the United Nations. This competition has changed Joel s life and has put the spotlight on the Athlone School for the Blind. LP Jimmy Lang Lions Club of Gordon s Bay Page 11

Bergvliet Lions Club Annual Easter Egg Project Our club has been lucky enough to have 3 schools collect Easter Eggs for us for over 20 years. Bergvliet Primary, Westcott Primary and Monterey Pre Primary children and parents contribute so generously to this cause. We thought we would not get so many this year as there has been a sharp increase in the price of Easter Eggs. This was not the case we received just under 7000 eggs of all shapes and sizes. Our beneficiaries include Children at Risk, Cafda, Victoria Hospital, homeless in the area, children and families at CHOC House, local Church youth programmes, HIV support programme, Meals on Wheels, old age homes and the WC Cerebral Palsy association. All in all about 30 groups benefited this year. A glimpse of some of the eggs we received Sorting the eggs Distribution of Easter Eggs at Victoria Hospital Page 13
