This will then run every other week. Newydd Housing Association have organised a chair exercise class that will start on Thursday 7th September am in Mountain Ash Day Centre! It will take place at the same time each week. The event is to raise money for The Breast Care Unit at The Royal Glamorgan Hospital. Tickets are 5 each and are available from The Library Hub in Taff's Well and the Pavilion in the Park. 5 Feel Good Factory Wales is holding an Open Day on Saturday 9th September from 12pm-4pm at their Toning and Rehabilitation Centre in Llantrisant. The session will give you to opportunity to try the power assisted toning equipment, which comprises of 6 bed and 6 chairs that can be used by almost anybody, from those who haven t exercised in years, to even the most fit and healthy. There will also be a therapist on hand offering a taster treatment. There will be an auction and Mrs Carrie Walters has kindly volunteering to have her hair shaved off at the complex for the charity. All are welcome to support this cause. Time Off Group are a very friendly group of welcoming people who have been meeting for over 30 years at the Temple on the Graig, Tuesdays from 1.30pm-3pm. All are welcome to join for a natter, a talk by a guest speakers, a cuppa made to your liking and a biscuit or two. All are welcome to drop in for a cuppa and a cake at any time during those hours. We are hoping to have someone come and give armchair aerobics in the future. Anyone wishing to join either of these groups can ring or Staff from the Lewis Merthyr Day Unit at Ysbyty George Thomas would like to extend a huge thank you to the group who delivered a stack of twiddle muffs earlier this summer. Unfortunately they do not know the name of the group who made them, the only information they have is that they came from a knitting group in Pontypridd. If you are a member of that group or know which group it was, please pass on the thanks from the staff as they are very grateful for the items. The Forum meet a few times throughout the year and provide older people with information and advice and is an opportunity to meet other people and to socialise. An event is planned for early October. If you would like to join the 50+ Forum, please contact Suzanne Lewis-Abbott, Older People and Supporting People Coordinator on or Parkinson s UK - Merthyr Tydfil Drop - In Café and taster sessions for people with Parkinson s are held at Georgetown Boys & Girls Club, Dynevor St, Merthyr Tydfil on the first Friday of every month from 2-4pm Join us for a cuppa and a chat.for more information please contact Rebecca Lydon, Volunteer Coordinator, on or rlydon@parkinsons.org.uk or Jeff Lawrence (volunteer support worker) on Visually Impaired Merthyr will be running a Finding Your Feet course which has been pioneered by Cardiff Institute for the Blind. The course will commence in late 6

7 September, and will repeat at a later date if it is oversubscribed. The course helps Visually Impaired people to access public transport, shopping, money management, media and entertainment and also I.T., telephones etc. The course will also teach relatives and friends how to lead Visually Impaired individuals. The course is free of charge and, if necessary, transport can be provided. The course will be held from to 3.30 on three days at fortnightly intervals. Lunch will be provided. In our Mindfulness Course you can learn a way of being which is helpful in managing stress, combating low mood and dealing with anxiety. Stress Control, starts Tuesday 26 September, 10am am and weekly for 6 weeks at St Matthias Church Hall, Bargoed Terrace, Treharris, Merthyr Tydfil, CF46 6RB. Stress Control is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and teaches skills that can be useful to manage stress, anxiety and low mood. Drink Wise Age Well - Free Alcohol Awareness and Brief Intervention courses at the Orbit Business Centre, Rhydycar Business Park, Merthyr Tydfil on 29th September. This course is ideal for qualified health and social care practitioners, workers who are new to the sector, and volunteers alike. The courses are an all-day event, and free of charge. 16 places are available on each session and later dates are available. Lunch and refreshments will be provided on the day. 8 Actif Woods - Birdwalk and Picnic. Early morning birdwalk and picnic - walk from Cyfarthfa park through Taf Fechan Nature Reserve on 1st September at 6.30am Meet at the bottom carpark near the lake at Cyfartha Park. All are welcome! The Actif Woods Project Merthyr aims to get people engaged with local woodlands to promote the benefits of green spaces on health and wellbeing. These activities are free, however, spaces are limited so please book. World Sepsis Day - 13th September 2017 Staff and volunteers from Sepsis UK are available to provide information and deliver 8

9 talks. Please contact Terence Canning at The Breast Test Wales mobile screening unit is returning to Mountain Ash. The mobile unit will be situated at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon from Sept to end Nov, Women aged between 50 and 70 this year, will receive postal invitations to attend for screening, if they are registered with the following surgeries: Rhos House Surgery, Penrhiwceiber Medical Centre, Cynon Vale Medical Practice, Hillcrest Medical Centre and Abercynon Medical Centre. Women aged over 70 can request an appointment by telephoning Breast Test Wales on Anyone concerned about a breast change should visit their GP without delay. For more information please contact your GP Practice or telephone Breast Test Wales on The Joint Care Programme is a 12 week community based programme targeted at people who are overweight and have chronic knee and/or hip pain. The programme helps support people to lose weight, increase activity levels and improve overall health and well being. The programme is currently available in Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre. The programme offers a two hour weekly session consisting of 1 hour of light exercise and 1 hour of nutrition advice, including some practical cookery sessions. This session is free of charge. To access the programme please speak to your GP/practice nurse/health professional about being referred. The Alzheimer s Society Cymru Programme Live Well with Dementia starts on Wednesday 6th September 2pm - 4pm at Voluntary Action Merthyr Tydfil. The programme is designed solely for people with a diagnosis of dementia and is a safe environment where they can express their feelings and discuss their condition, therefore carers and professionals will not be able to accompany the person with dementia on the course. The Programme is designed for people in the early stages of dementia with a formal diagnosis. If you know of someone who may be interested in attending the programme then please contact either Rhia Harris (rhia.harris@alzheimers.org.uk) or Emily McCarthy (Emily.Jenkins@alzheimers.org.uk), who will be facilitating the programme, on to discuss the referral process. Parkinson s UK Self-Management Programme Places are available for people with Parkinson s and/or current carers of people with the condition and it is free to attend. Delivered over three weeks (5 hours per week) the groups are led by trained volunteer facilitators. These facilitators are either people with Parkinson s and/or current carers of people with the condition. Our experience is that people really value the chance to meet others and talk through some of the bigger questions about life with Parkinson s. People tell us that as a result of attending the programme they feel: 9

10 armed with information and knowledge more confident, positive, in control and able to move forward less alone as a result of meeting others Participants also say they gain: greater self-awareness and insight a personal action plan for doing specific things such as exercise, hobbies and therapeutic activities improved speech as a result of talking in the group The Self-Management Group in Cardiff will meet on Wednesdays as follows:- 27 September, 4 October and 11 October, 10.30am pm at Cardiff & Vale College (City Centre Campus), Dumballs Road, Cardiff CF10 5BF If you have any questions or want to register your interest please selfmanagement@parkinsons.org.uk or cal Eye Clinic Liaison Officer Service A support service for adults and children who have sight problems and for their relatives and carers.
