Rowan Tree Cancer Care at their centre based at 58/60 Commercial Street, Mountain Ash, they provide a range of complementary therapies such as Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Indian Head and neck massages, all designed to increase a sense of wellbeing. There are 12 power assisted machines which allow users to exercise with minimal effort; each machine being designed to provide low impact movement so that the user can literally lie back and let the machine do the exercise. This form of exercise, even though suitable for all ages, is ideal for the 50+ age group. With increasing age there is a higher risk of developing one of these conditions. A Cwm Taf Health Check helps find ways to lower this risk. Patients in the age group, without a pre-existing condition, can expect to receive a letter from their GP inviting them for a free Cwm Taf Health Check. Freephone number: or text HMQ to to speak to a member of the Help Me Quit team. What is the Macmillan Activity Promotion Programme (MAPP)? This is a 6 week course run by a Specialist Physiotherapist and a Physical Activity Support Worker. It aims to improve the physical activity levels of adults with a cancer diagnosis, living in South East Wales. You may be at any stage of your cancer journey from diagnosis through to living beyond cancer or palliative care. If you want to be more active we will do what we can to help you. Each session will consist of a health and wellbeing discussion, as well as a physical activity session. The physical activity session will mainly consist of circuit based activities which allows us to tailor the activities to your individual needs. If you have a cancer diagnosis, live in South East Wales and would like to know 6

7 more, please contact our team on ext 6340 or via our address, For the Cwm Taf area, sessions are being delivered at The Muni, Pontypridd. Live Well with Dementia - is a new programme being run by Alzheimer s Society Cymru. The programme is designed solely for people with a diagnosis of dementia and is a safe environment where they can express their feelings and discuss their condition. Carers and professionals will not be able to accompany the person with dementia on the course. The Live Well with dementia programme is designed for people in the early stages of dementia with a formal diagnosis. The person does not have to live in Merthyr Tydfil, but must be able to get to the Voluntary Action centre, as we are unable to provide transport for this service. The programme runs once a week for 7 consecutive weeks and will begin on: Wednesday the 6th of September 2pm-4pm in Voluntary Action Merthyr Tydfil If you know of someone who may be interested in attending the programme then please contact either: Rhia Harris (rhia.harris@alzheimers.org.uk) or Emily McCarthy (Emily.Jenkins@alzheimers.org.uk), on Flu Campaign 2017 Community Coordinators will be actively supporting GP practices in increasing uptake of flu vaccinations for over 65 s and ask risk groups aged below 65. CCs will be attending GP practices and Flu myth busting with individuals to help them make informed decisions around their health and wellbeing. Cwm Taf general information Comic Relief Launch New Active Ageing Grants Programme (UK) - The new Active Ageing: Creating Change in Communities initiative is providing 1.5 million of funding in order to engage older people aged 65 and over from harder to reach groups to get involved in opportunities which use their skills, knowledge and experience to contribute to their communities. Registered and un-registered community based organisations and partnerships across the UK, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man can apply for grants of between 40,000 and 80,000 to support projects, initiatives and activities which primarily focus on benefitting older people, specifically those older people who do not usually participate in volunteering or social activities because they are from a disadvantaged community, or face barriers to participation. Comic Relief is also interested in supporting activities which will have a wider benefit for the community in which they are taking place.the deadline for applications is 29 August 2017 (midday).
