1 SOUTH SHROPSHIRE ACADEMY THE LINK Edition 19, 1st February 2019 Dear parents and carers, Well, it appears that we have escaped the worst of the snow this week, with school able to remain open and students continue with their learning. Phew! It is hard to believe that we are now approaching the half way point in this academic year. With only two weeks remaining until half term, time is running away as students continue working hard towards their challenging targets. Year 11 students have only 64 school days until the start of the summer series GCSE exams and should therefore be engaged in revision at home, along with utilising the support that their class teachers are providing. For Year 9 students, internal subject examinations are fully underway providing them with the experience of sitting the assessments in exam conditions. This will be followed shortly after half term by the Key Stage 4 Pathways Evening, during which students, along with parent/carers, will be able to hear about the Pathways subjects we are planning to offer for their Key Stage 4 courses. Please be assured that we will endeavour to open and remain open wherever possible but I do have to be mindful of Health & Safety both on site and more importantly, on the journey to and from school. We do take clear advice and guidance from our transport companies relating to the safety of travel. School Closure before school If we are faced with inclement weather before the start of school and I make a decision not to open it will be broadcast on BBC Radio Shropshire and other local radio stations as early as possible on the morning concerned. We will also post a message on our website under the News tab on the Home page, in the drop down Announcements before 07.00am whenever possible. Early Closure during the day If the bus companies determine that they need to make journeys earlier in the day due to bad weather we will send students home early. We will attempt to inform parents of these arrangements via BBC Radio Shropshire and other local radio stations; the school website home page and through In Touch, which will leave a message by and text. If you do not wish your child to go home early please inform us of the arrangements you wish to make for his/her safety and journey home. Colleagues who are local will stay in school to supervise students until (but no additional travel arrangements can be made). Decision to re-open following closure The school will open the following day after closure unless a notice is posted to the contrary on our website; and on BBC Radio Shropshire. Please check these sources early in the morning if in doubt. Many thanks Young Voices 2019 Young Voices was such a great experience.it was full of great songs and people, I had an amazing time. Getting to be in the biggest school choir was such a great memory and one to remember. I would recommend for everyone interested to tag along. The feeling of people famous sitting in these seats as they are performing ahead of you. All in all I and many others had such a fantastic time. By Niamh Offerman Young Voices 2019 was really quite remarkable. There were extraordinary guests, incredible dancers and unbelievable songs. It was a very memorable moment and I really enjoyed it. By Wioletta Sewry. On Friday 18th January a group of excited Y7, 8 and 9 students travelled to Birmingham to take part in Young Voices. We had been practising 14 songs since last Autumn and we were all word perfect. It was an amazing experience. The highlight of my night was when Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet came on stage and sang their hit song 'Gold'. We arrived back in Church Stretton at 11 o'clock tired but very happy. Careers in the NHS stretch far beyond Nursing and Medicine Dear pupil, Maintenance Engineering Therapists Scientists HR Finance IT We d like to invite you and up to two guests to an NHS careers event arranged jointly by The Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust & Shrewsbury Colleges Group on Wednesday 13 February from pm at the Shropshire Education & Conference Centre. The NHS is the largest employer nationally and locally with a wide range of jobs and careers that include catering, business, estates, as well as the caring and medical roles. The event will give you the opportunity to meet a variety of staff from the hospital trust and to find out about their job roles, have a tour of hospital facilities and discuss advice and guidance with College staff. This event will also provide you with guidance on apprenticeships and how to apply for posts at the hospital. As well as stands and hands-on activities there will be talks every 30mins: the NHS will showcase the routes into their diverse job roles including work experience and apprenticeships, and Shrewsbury Colleges Group will highlight the many qualifications and course packages we can offer for these careers. Parking: there is limited free parking at the venue with additional spaces in the hospital main car parks where charges will be covered (more information to follow booking). Alternatively there will be a shuttle bus in operation from the College s London Road Campus (approx. 15min journey).
