AREA 1- FIRST QUARTER REPORT DAISY P. ARCE Area 1 Director I am pleased to submit the First Quarter Report for Area 1, District 17 covering the period June 1 through September 30. Training of Officers and Members Barely six weeks from the International Convention in Torino, Italy, Area 1 together with Area 3 had its Officers and Members Training on September 1, 2012 at the Metropolitan Club in Makati City. Ninety-four (94) members from Area 1 attended the Training Session. The general feedback on the training was good - the participants found the topics relevant, the speakers knowledgeable and the District goals appropriate. Administrative Matters Meetings The Area 1 Presidents had three meetings for the period, viz., on July 26, August 16 and September 27. It was also agreed that, except for the August 16 meeting which was held earlier to address matters relating to the Training Session, all Area 1 Presidents meetings will be on the fourth Thursday of the month at 3 p.m., at the Metroclub Coffee Shop, unless another venue and time is earlier advised. Club Visit Zonta Club of Greater Rizal 1 August 15, Talked on the District Biennial Goals Club Activity Attended Zonta Club of Manila 1 - Launch of the Retrieve or Grieve Over Mother Earth Environment Project, with a Poster Making Contest on September 2, 2012 at the Club s Tondo Livelihood Center in Manila. 2 The Clubs have various projects, in advancement of the goals of Zonta International. I have classified the projects and set out the particular club s accomplishment as follows: Education All of the clubs in Area 1 have projects related to Education. For this biennium, ZC Manila 1 led the pack with the selection at the beginning of the school year of the 80 recipients of the Club s scholarship grants. ZC Quezon Cityinitiated and conducted a talk at Miriam College in Quezon City on the topic The Best of You Brings Out the Best of Love. Centered on the dignity of women and their contribution to society, the activity was a prelude to the chartering of a Golden Z Club in the college. 114 students participated. In similar fashion, ZC Marikina initiated a Forum on Peace in celebration of the International Day of Peace. Attended by 1,000 third year high school students from the Sta. Elena High School in Markina City, the forum had Undersecretary Yasmin Lao of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process as speaker. In the last biennium, ZC Manila II constructed a multi-purpose building on Anacleto St., in Sta. Cruz, Manila. The Club utilizes the building to continue with the day care facility and nursery school for the children in the community. ZC Mandaluyong San Juan II continued with its annual distribution of school supplies, books and reference materials to students of the San Juan Elementary School as well as to those in Maly Elementary School in San Mateo, Rizal. Books and reference materials were also distributed to high school students in San Juan City. And, at its flagship project in the Correctional Institution for Women, the Clubdistributed books and school supplies for the day care center and the library there. ZC Baliuaginitiated what is proposed to be a continuing lecture series on various fields of endeavour to make children aware of the different career opportunities open to them. The Club started with a lecture on Journalism for selected Grade 4 and Grade 6 students. Women s Health On August 16, ZC Greater Rizal II conducted a free pap smear and breast examination on 50 women in Marungko Health Center in Marungko, Bulacan. ZC GR II member Dr. LupeLazaro delivereda lecture on regular breast examination and its benefits to the same women. Page2
On September 19, ZC Greater Rizal I, as part of a two-fold seminar (Health and Advocacy), the Club sponsored a Breast Cancer Awareness lecture by a professional from the Department of Health. The club distributed blankets and vitamins to the women attendees of the seminar. On September 22, ZC Quezon City, in partnership and collaboration with ZC GR 2, conducted an Anti-Cancer Clearance for Women at the Sta. Maria de Mattias Mission Center in Bgy. Culiat, Quezon City. ZC Greater Rizal 2 Dr.Divina Lupe Lazaro and IPP Lolita Sy(a registered nurse) together with ZC QC members attended to 95 patients. The patients underwent breast examination and pap smear. This will be followed up with the showing of a film on Personal Hygiene, Wellness and Awareness of the Zonta Advocacy on October 6. General Health ZC EDSA and Its Environs conducted a medical mission at the CecilioApostol Elementary School in Caloocan City. One hundred (100) children underwent a general check-up and were provided with vitamins. In cooperation with the office of Pasay City CouncilorIleana Ibay, the club conducted feeding programs in two feeding centers in Pasay City. In collaboration with My Health Clinic of the JCI chapter of San Juan City, ZC Manila III joined the Jaycees One Flu Shot and Give One Free to an Underprivileged Child. The club donated 30 flu shots. Recipients were children from ages 6-10 from Barangay St. Joseph in San Juan City, identified as the poorest of the 10 barangays in the city. ZC Manila III also initiated talks with the Bgy. Captain, Nelly Duka for a health and sanitation program to be put in place in the community, spearheaded by the club. On July 3, ZC Antipolo, in partnership with the Rizal Provincial Government, conducted a medical and dental mission at the Ondoy Resettlement Area in SitioSumilang, Bgy. San Jose, Antipolo City. The mission ministered to 400 patients (both children and adults). While the medical mission was going on, there was an emergency call and club PP FelyDupaya, a registered nurse delivered one of the residents in the resettlement area of a baby girl. Truly a great human interest moment! On July 9, ZC Mandaluyong San Juan II brought qualified resource persons to help the children in the Welcome House, in Paco, Manila. The Welcome House is a shelter for victims of violence, abused women and their children. The Club also distributed gifts to the children at the Welcome House. Page3
On July 12, ZC Greater Rizal II visited Barangay Rosario, Pasig City. Club members shared 200 bags filled with grocery items with the residents of the barangay, and for their children, they distributed 200 bags of schools supplies. The club also donated three wheelchairs. But the best sharing done by the Club was imparting knowledge on Solar Water Distillation. With the knowledge of distillation, the community is assured of clean water supply. A matter of teaching a man how to fish and not just giving him fish!on the same occasion the Club equipped the barangay with complete canteen facilities and a karaoke machine. Health applies to the mind and well-being of a person, after all. On many a warm evening or for barangay affairs, the community had access to a karaoke machine to make the occasion merrier and foster camaraderie among the residents. On September 9, ZC Baliuag, in cooperation with the Parish Pastoral Council joined a Dental Mission held at the Parish Hall of Angat, Bulacan. Six members of the Club serviced 10 patients, and also gave them antibiotics and pain relievers. Economic Empowerment As its flagship project, ZC Quezon City conducts a Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS) for an average 275 OFWs each week. The seminar, directed to prepare them for eventual travel and employment overseas, is conducted in collaboration with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, from Monday through Friday from 8 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon. As part of project PDOS, the Club, in cooperation with Philippine National Red Cross, QC Chapter visited the training center of Mirben International Manpower Services, Inc. and met up with 130 prospective applicants last September 11. ZC Mandaluyong San Juan I has a continuing project for a series of financial lecture sessions for the women micro-entrepreneurs of San Juan. Early in this biennium, the Club made arrangements to conduct its first lecture. ZC of Pampanga & Environs conducted last July 28, an orientation for the Parent- Teachers Association of the public high school on direct selling of Natasha Beauty Products. This would afford the women the opportunity to augment their income.the Club also entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Starfish Barangay Water, a company with office and plant inside the Clark Freeport Zone. Under the agreement, Starfish would provide the free supply, installation and maintenance of water purifying water stations in coordination with the local community. The local community will provide the site, structure and personnel to operate the stations. A quota is set for the number of gallons sold and the revenue generated will be shared by the parties to the Agreement. Out of the profits generated, a certain percentage will be set aside for Page4
community development and service. This ensures availability of funds for Club projects within the same community. Community Service In the wake of Habagat, ZC Quezon City with the Philippine National Red Cross QC Chapter, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Youth Ministry, the Santa Rafael Maria House of Spirituality and the Cassanova Maternal and Child Development Center, brought food packages and ministered to more than 100 evacuees at the Cassanova Maternal and Child Development Center along Cassanova Drive, Bgy. ZC Antipolo, responding to the havoc of Habagat, club organized relief operations. Relief goods were distributed to 75 families in SitioSucaben, Bgy. Mambugan, Antipolo City on August 10. Page5
Not to be outdone, ZC Pampanga and Environs, the baby club of Area I, conducted relief operations in Bgy. Dalayap, Macabebe, Pampanga. Packages of rice, canned goods, quick cook noodles, biscuits, purified water, soap, shampoo and clothes were distributed to at least 200 families. Truly, the Zontians of Area I showed the world it cared. Livelihood In partnership with Bgy.Culiat, ZC de Valle Verde sponsored 20 students for the 3- month Cosmetology Training Program being conducted by TESDA trainors. The Club distributed cosmetology kits consisting of scissors, combs, barber s capes, curlers, nippers and other necessary accoutrements for the training program. The training will lead to the students being TESDA certified and qualified. This opens them to work opportunities. Environment In its own response to the tragedy of Habagat, ZC Manila I, through its Z Club in Raja Soliman, launched an information campaign for environment awareness in the light of what happened during the 8 days of Habagat. The launch started with an on the spot poster painting at the Tondo Livelihood Center of the club with the theme Retrieve or Grieve over Mother Earth on September 2, ZC Baliuag, as part of its outreach program conducted a lecture on Environment Protection to parents, mostly mothers, of the residents of Bgy. Piel, Baliuag, Bulacan. Advocacy ZC de Valle Verde conducted the first Advocacy project for this biennium in Area 1. And rightfully so! The home club of District 17 Advocacy Chair Marilyn Alentajjan had a Forum on Violence Against Women and Their Children at Barangay Culiat, Quezon City. With the 150 participants were Barangay officials who not only listened to Ateneo Human Rights Center Director Ray Paulo Santiago but interacted with the participants and the guest speaker. ZC Greater Rizal I conducted a seminar on domestic violence last September 19. Speakers from the Women Help Desk of the Pasig Police Station apprised women of Barangay Pineda, Pasig City of their rights under the law and where to seek protection given certain circumstances.
