The Knights Vision Lions of Virginia District 24-D December Governor s Message Volume 91 Issue 6 Dec 2013 December is here already...wow... where has the time gone. As we spend time with our family and friends please remember that there are those in our communities that do not celebrate the season at all. It is very sad when I see people down on their luck and homeless, or struggling and have no income to have a nice dinner or to purchase gifts for their children. Lions all over the world and especially right here in District 24-D can be proud that we are helping provide food and shelter and making as many as we can know that we care. On December 7th my club, Lion Donnie Johnson Aragona-Pembroke, is holding a LAMP project at the Salvation District Governor Army Rehabilitation Center located on Virginia Beach Blvd next to Haynes Furniture. Wards Corner Lions are again holding a Christmas Party, December 14th, for Norfolk residents providing much needed toys for young children and lunch and could use your help serving lunch to over 300 people. Lions all over our District are showing the true spirit of the Holiday Season by helping others...we do this all year long, not just during the months of November and December. "We Serve", our motto, truly says it all. I wish each and every one of you a very happy holiday season. As we enjoy some time with our family and friends let us never forget how blessed we are to have these gifts. Life is too short...let us always do what is right, what is needed, and respect others opinions. I am very proud to be your District Governor and proud of the work you do for others...happy Holidays!!! Donnie Johnson District Governor
District Blog Wow, has November been a busy month, 12 Official Visits, 3 Region Meetings, judging the Peace Poster Contest, for my club and the district, and a Charter Night. Attending each visit I have learned so much. It is just amazing the differences between the clubs, wish there was a way for all of you to come along. Lion Pam Kidwell 1 st Vice District Governor At the Region III meeting, Lion Jerry Phelps informed us that we no longer will be parking cars at the LPGA Kingsmill Championship Golf Tournament due to the lack of club participation. He said 13,000 cars, over a 4-day period, were parked with only 66 volunteers. What an opportunity for our organization to be missing out on. As our District Governor is near the completion of his Official Visits, I hope he has inspired your heart and helped to motivate your members. Wards Corner is planning their Christmas Party at Granby High School in Norfolk on December 14 th. This is their only service project for the year where they feed the less fortunate and Santa gives each child a toy. They need help this year with bringing in the toys from the cars to serving the many, many meals that will be prepared. This is a very busy time of year for all of us but one that will surely put the season of giving into your heart. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending. The winter storm that put misery into travelers plans this Thanksgiving brought joy into mine. I have been trying to entice my son into joining lions for quite some time; however, he never seemed interested or ready. This past Tuesday, while attending Portsmouth Host s Official Visit, my son attended as my guest. To my surprise and after Lion Donnie s talk, he signed a membership application. I was asked to do the induction at their meeting and Christmas Party on December 17 th ( the more the merrier). I consider this of one my proudest moments and pray this is the beginning of a new trend for our wonderful organization. These young people want to help. We just need to go get them keep those service projects going! Don t forget the cub and Leo groups they are our future! I hope everyone had a blessed and happy Thanksgiving. I know the holidays are a difficult time for some but I do pray we reached out to those in need and performed our motto WE SERVE. LION PAM

Lion Sandy Carawan Received this from a local school nurse I m so glad he thought to share it with the KV. These are the kind of changes we are making in the lives of children and families all over. Thanks Lion Sandy! I wanted to let you know how much you are making a difference. I had a parent call yesterday expressing their gratefulness in the screenings you are providing. His daughter is a third grader here and was found by you all to have a right eye gaze with astigmatism. They took her to the eye doctor and she was found to have a right eye refractive amblyopia. This means she is close to blindness in her right eye. She excels at school and sports and has never complained so they feel without your screening she could have gone completely blind at some point. Thankfully they caught it early enough. Thank you again for all you do from me and her parents. Sarah Scouten School Nurse Cedar Road Elementary

A Poulan 38 inch Riding Lawn Mower was one of the items up for bid during the 4th Annual Bid n Buy Charity Auction. Lion Chet Kramer makes one of many announcements during the silent auction phase of the 4th Annual Bid n Buy Charity Auction. Lion Don Burson and Lion Nancy Cranford sort out items in preparation for the 4th Annual Bid n Buy Charity Auction. Little Creek Lions man the Raffle Ticket Sales station during the 4th Annual Bid n Buy Charity Auction. The 4th Annual Bid n Buy Auction of the Lions Charity Foundation of District 24 D was a remarkable success! With estimates of nearly 200 people in attendance at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Chesapeake, the mood was festive, the participants were active and deals were plentiful! According to auction organizers, this is one of our most profitable auctions yet. In spite of the dreary weather, individual deal seekers were in abundance and enthusiastically bid on over 300 items up for auction. Winners of the of the LCF Charity Raffle were: 1st - Cedric Jones - Portsmouth - $1,000 2nd - Dwight Goodenour - Williamsburg- $500 3rd - Bruce MacIver - Virginia Beach - $250 Several items for the Live Auction Phase of the 4th Annual Bid n Buy Auction are on display in an attractive setting designed by Lion Mary Lou Newman. The support of the Lions Clubs of the District with their contributions of time, auction items and enthusiasm were the ingredients which made our 4th Annual Bid n Buy Auction successful. The Charity Foundation Board expresses our thanks and gratitude to all the loyal supporters. Live auction participants examine a 14 k Gold Ruby Ring up for bid during the Live Auction Phase of the 4th Annual Bid n Buy Charity Auction as auctioneer Lion Irving Meyers seeks the highest bid. Volunteers, including Lion Jerry Phelps, sort out auction items during set up for the 4th Annual Bid n Buy Charity Auction. Lions Nancy Watters and Dick Knox discuss bidding on an auction item as auction participants in the background survey scores of deals to be had.
Navigating the Membership Straits Over the past few months, you ve probably heard many Lions talking like a pirate shouting arrrggghhh, yo ho ho, ahoy matey or calling DG Donnie Captain. Did everyone go mad? Debatable, but we were really just having a little fun with our Zone H membership treasure hunt. Everyone knows that a good pirate will always seek more membership bounty since volunteers are definitely worth their weight in gold. Thanks to this adventure, the Thalia Lions Club and the town Center Blind Lions Club are a little richer in new member gold. We welcome aboard the seven new Lions who pledged to plunge into our community service projects. Our culminating event was held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the Lions Medical Eye Bank in Norfolk. Thirty-three Lions and nineteen guests voyaged to the Open House to learn more about the community service jewels of District 24 D. Lion Sherry Atwood, Past District Governor, extended a warm welcome to our guests. Later, PDG Sherry shared her personal story about receiving a cornea transplant which restored her eyesight. (If you never heard Lion Sherry s story, it s inspiring enough to warm the heart of Blackbeard himself.) Lion Beth Stevens, Zone H Chair, outlined the Lions history, organization s purpose, district projects and accomplishments through a photo PowerPoint presentation. Lion Tucker Casanova, Hospital Community and Education Coordinator, spoke about the Lions Medical Eye Bank. A brief ceremony was held to induct our new members. Then, the group proceeded to the Eye Bank offices for a tour of the facility. Lion Dr. John Watters, Eye Bank Board member, presented the medical aspect of cornea transplants during the tour. Finally, guests enjoyed refreshments and displays of the clubs, youth services programs and the Eyeglass Recycling Center. My sincere thanks to the Lions from Aragona Pembroke, Bayside, Kempsville, Oceana-Lynnhaven-Golden, Thalia, Town Center Blind, Windsor and Woodstock who all heaved ho to make our treasure hunt a big success. You all make me proud to be a bucko. Lion Sherry Atwood, sharing her experiences with Cornea Transplantation and the profound effect it s had on her life. Inducting Our New Lions
Region III Had a Halloween of a Time, we had good food and fun. The meeting was buzzing and no one know what was going to happen next. The DG had his Elvis glasses and hair when it all started, (Did not get a Picture). All meeting should be relaxed and get as many members to join in on the fun. All the clubs are busy bee's with their service projects, fundraising and membership drives. Region III is moving forward and having a good time doing it. 11 The area Girl Scout Troops have been collecting eyeglasses as one of their service projects for months and they had expressed an interest in learning more about the "life of donated eyewear". The Eyeglass Recycling Center was contacted and asked to participate in this project. Naturally we were delighted to help and to expand our recycling activities. On 4 consecutive Saturday's in November the Girl Scouts, along with their sponsors, various family members, the Scouts Public Relations Manager Katlin Smith and the Colonial Coast Manager Donna Farmham toured the building & Van, sorted, cleaned and graded donated glasses. We had 93 visitors and over 345 glasses donated. Everyone participating was impressed with the operation of our Center and several children have asked to come again. Many thanks to the Lions participating in this project. We could not have actively participated without their support. Twenty two Lions from Thalia, Bayside, Woodstock, OLG, Kempsville, Princess Anne, and Oceanside Lions clubs worked from 10am -1:00pm screening 88 children. Fourteen children were referred for further examination. This holiday occasion is a wonderful way to partner with Pembroke Mall and is always a fun and rewarding event for Lions!
