1 TRANSGENDER YOUTH desperately need our help. A national survey of middle and high school students found that 75% of transgender youth feel unsafe at school. They also had significantly lower GPAs, were more likely to miss school out of concern for their safety, and were less likely to plan on continuing their education. As a result of the bullying and transphobia they encounter throughout their childhoods, they are far more likely to experience self-loathing and depression. According to one study, 1 41% of transgender individuals will attempt suicide at some point in their lives, compared with just 4.6% of the general public. We at North Jersey Pride believe no child should have to fit into a binary gender box to get the love and acceptance they deserve. RAD Kids, NJP s social support network for families of transgender and gender-fluid youth, offers gender-creative youth an affirming space for self-expression and empowers them to take their place in the world exactly as they are. By connecting parents and youth with other RAD Families, both can receive help and support as these children navigate growing into their authentic selves. Since its launch in 2015, RAD Kids has seen attendance grow exponentially, with families coming from all over North Jersey, including Essex, Sussex, Bergen, Middlesex and Hudson counties. Events have included an endof-summer beach party; bingo and potluck dinner; an afternoon at Jumpnasium; a facilitated discussion with a mental health professional specializing in gender issues; and most recently, a holiday party that drew more than 80 attendees. In the following pages, you can read all about the impact RAD Kids has had on families, our winter gala fundraiser, will take place at the Grand Summit Hotel on Feb. 24th, A whimsical ride back in time to the Roaring 20s, the Ball will be a celebration of life and love for more than 300 guests, with live entertainment, an open bar, plentiful hors d oeuvres, buffet and silent auction. 2 READ WHAT PARENTS HAD TO SAY ABOUT RAD KIDS: RAD Kids is a safe place to land no matter where you are on this journey of raising a transgender or gender creative kid. It s a community that truly meets folks where they are and says it s okay to not fit into the world s boxes! That s something that s not easy to find and is quite literally life-saving to many trans and gender-creative youth and their families. For my child, RAD Kids provides a place to see other kids like him and to have fun. Sometimes after a RAD Kids hangout, on the drive home, we are able to have some of the most open and honest conversations about the challenges and pride that comes with being a transgender, non-binary or gender creative kid. We are not sure how our gender fluid child s journey will go but I love knowing my RAD Kid community will be there for us along the way! It makes us feel like we are not the only ones on this journey and that there are amazing kids, and adults, standing by our sides, even when at times we feel alone. RAD Kids is a safe haven, invaluable resource and an incredibly important community for my child and so many others. As a child was leaving our very first gathering, he turned to his mom and said, I want to grow my hair long. I know I can now because Caleb did.
