1 The Knights Vision Lions of Virginia District 24-D August Governor s Message Volume 91 Issue 2 Aug 2013 Well I can truly say June was a very busy month for me. We left for Germany on June 29th from Norfolk International in route to JFK for the first leg of our journey. We were almost an hour late leaving Norfolk so when we got to JFK we had less than 30 minutes to get on the plane. Thank god for a very nice airline Captain who lead us to a shortcut and we were able to hop on one of those carts to take us to our terminal at the far end of another terminal. We were the last ones on that plane. Got to Amsterdam and only had 10 minutes to spare to catch the flight to Hamburg. Finally there in Germany...there was a huge bus waiting...and we were the only ones on it in route to the hotel. All of the Virginia incoming District Governors stayed at the same hotel. While Lion Donnie Johnson there we bonded more than we had before. We laughed...we District Governor walked...and walked...and walked all over the city near the hotel. Found a local restaurant...(they are all German Restaurants)...in Germany...lol...and they served all the traditional fare of the German people. We ate there 3 times while there it was so good. Met up with the rest of the Virginia Lions who were staying across town one night for dinner and fellowship. The local arena was named the O2...that is where we listened to Laura Bush address us all...and got a mini concert from Andrea Bocelli who was AWSOME. We were asked to sit and eat lunch and dinner with other District Governors from all over the world. And finally it was time to return home. Had my first official visit Monday, July 15 on the Eastern Shore at Central Shore Lions. Two days later, I was at I-PDG Stans home club Thalia. As I write this article the 1st Cabinet Meeting will take place tomorrow. I can see all the pieces working together now and am amazed at how much hard work is done changing over from one year to the next. I want to say a very special Thank You to my Cabinet Secretary, Sharene Nolan, our Webmaster Sol Sherfey and his Assistant Don Fuller who have worked very hard to make changes to forms and to get the data you need on our website. I also want to say a very special thank you to PDG Donna Weiler and her helpers PCC Gary Rapier and Lion Bernice McElroy for doing an awsome job with the directory and trying to get the information as accurate as possible. I had the honor of watching the Youth Exchange Students at their talent show and they were very impressive with the amount of talent and teamwork as they went through the show. If they can learn to get along this quickly...would not it be great of countries could do the same without all

2 the violence. Keep up the good work of Lions and know...we do make a difference. DG Donnie Johnson District Blog First, congratulations to Lion Donnie as our new District Governor. He has put a lot of thought and heart into this coming year and it should be a great one! It seems like just yesterday that I was elected as your Second VDG and now I have attended my first International Convention and serving as your First VDG. Hamburg had approximately Twenty five thousand lions in one city; they rolled out the red carpet for us, large welcome signs everywhere. So many countries represented, nationalities and customs displayed. The Parade of Nations Wow costumes, bands, so many beautiful colors. The highlight was the award given to the Virginia Beach Town Center Blind lions club and accepted by Lions Beth and Mac Stevens. The club was one of the Lion Pam Kidwell 1 st Vice District Governor makes the dream work! Positive Attitudes Motivate! top three finalists and won the The World of Service Award. It was such a pleasure getting to know Lions Beth and Mac and I am looking forward to working with them as well as all the clubs in District 24D. As we go forward in this coming year, please remember teamwork Lion Pam Kidwell 1 st Vice District Governor Lion Ray Yannello 2nd Vice District Governor Fellow Lions, It s tip time. Well the dog days of summer are upon us. Heat, heat, more heat, and something your Treasurer should be looking at, taxes. For all but one club, the tax year ended on June 30 th, so you might think Treasurers should be busy putting everything together. Not true. Clubs with less than $50,000 of income & assets need only file the e-post card to complete your clubs requirement to file taxes. EVERY club must file a form EVERY year. Don t skip a year thinking you only have to file every 3 years. The law is that you lose your 501c(3) non-profit status for not filing for 3 consecutive years. Another tip involves the Monthly Membership Report or MMR. A monthly requirement, but nothing says you have to wait to file. File on the 1 st of the month, then resubmit if there are any changes.

3 There are no limits on the number of times you can submit an MMR during the month. In the words of our Chicago politicians, file early and file often. Think I made this tips on my own. No way, I m not that fast. I learned this tips during visits to our clubs on Traveling Leo visits. A great way to expand ideas and spread the wealth is our Traveling Leo program. Visit another club, small or large, near or far, and you too may learn different ways to do things more efficiently. Hope to see everyone at the New Kent Shrimp Fest or upcoming Zone meetings. Have a great summer. The Knight s Vision is more than happy to promote any event within the district. If your club is having an event don t hesitate to submit a flier or announcement for publication BUT, for maximum impact and district participation it must be in at least a month and a half before the event takes place. Especially, if your function is within the first two weeks of the month. ~District Governor Lion Donnie Johnson Last month I placed a 67 th Anniversary Announcement for Lion Bob Tolbert and his wife Dot. This is a couple that has inspired me since I met them and I was happy and honored to do it. This year I reached out to the district and asked, should they feel moved to, send a brief message of congratulations And you did, so many I could barely fit them all in! We ll one came just too late to make the deadline, and rather than leave it out. I m including it below. Thank you all for participating YIL- Lion Tucker Lion Bob and Dot: Congratulations to you both for many years of togetherness and happiness. Not many people can say they have been together that long. You are both great people and we are blessed to call you a friend. Love and many more. - Lions Dave and Debbie

10 Remote Area Medical Remote Area Medical was held for the 14th year in Wise Va. There was over 1,500 volunteers there from all over the country. 24 D did not take the sight and hearing van, but Lions from our district were there. Lions John & Nancy Watters, John & Nancy Cranford, Stephen & Linda Eggelston, Fran Scott & daughter Brennan all worked the vision area. Lion Jill Morefield was in Registration, Lions Monica Brickell & Linda Southworth & a friend of hers worked where ever they were needed. Over 3,000 patients were seen over the 2 1/2 days. Dental & Vision are the largest groups there. Lions prepared food and fed the volunteers breakfast & lunch. A local church provided bag lunches for all the patients. The local church fed the Lions on Thursday evening with a spaghetti supper. The Appalachia Lions did a cook out for all the Lions on Saturday night. A special thanks goes to Lombart instruments for loaning us enough eye equipment to set up 6 stations for Dr's. A very special thanks to Lion John Watters for driving it all there. Once again we came home tired but had a light heart, so much good is done in those 2 1/2 days! Lion Nancy Cranford 24 D Lamp Co Chair
