1 2012 ANNUAL REPORT CELEBRATING THE UNIQUE SUCCESSES OF LIFE HOUSE YOUTH
2 Life House programs build a strong community by helping homeless kids develop essential life skills. Our staff focuses on each youth s unique strengths to ensure our kids success. Youth like Sarah A year ago I didn t even have enough money to survive. Lacking family support, for Sarah drugs and violence were replacements for love. By age 14, Sarah was on the streets, sleeping in friend s basements and even in a pop-up camper with other homeless kids. That s when Sarah found Life House. SUCCESS IS... Without Life House, I would still be on the streets or dead. I don t like to think about it Today, with help from Life House programs, Sarah lives independently, renting her own safe and stable home. She s been employed at the same job a full year even saving up enough money for a trip to New York City. It was great seeing the Statue of Liberty in person, and not on some TV, says Sarah, smiling. While visiting the East Coast, Sarah applied to a few colleges and recently learned she s been accepted to her favorite! Today, Sarah still works with Life House for help with finding financial aid. Life House helped me learn about myself, and taught me what I need to do to succeed. CELEBRATION OF SUCCESS Life House youth were recognized by the community for their achievements in education at the annual Celebration of Success held in May of 2012.
3 LIFE HOUSE: HELPING HOMELESS KIDS SINCE 1991 For over 20 years, Life House goals are to help at risk, homeless youth become healthy, positive adults. Our emergency youth services are located in the LIFELINE Building, two blocks from the public transit center, downtown Duluth, Minnesota. Today, Life House is the only drop-in center for homeless kids in Northeastern Minnesota OUTCOMES AND ACTIVITIES 602 youth ages served meals provided 275 youth ages connected with Life House programs. Of those youth: 91% of youth who accessed affordable housing remained stable for at least 6 months 76% of youth served achieved success in their educational goals (high school, GED, college) 75% of youth served obtained employment &/or job placement with local employers 97% of youth served increased health levels through on-site &/or local health resources/ services Without Life House I would be homeless with nowhere to go. Now I have a place of my own and help with finding a job. Jermaine
