Our mission from the beginning has been to end domestic violence and create a society that is intolerant to all types of violence. ACADV has helped victims and their families rebuild their lives through non-violent means. We strive to empower victims and to eliminate the re-victimization of domestic violence by individuals, organizations, and society through education and collaboration. The Banquet will honor community leaders, employers, political figures and media agencies who strive to end domestic violence. The banquet will follow the networking reception on October 20th at 7 p.m. CONFERENCE FEATURES The Book of Remembrance Pledge to end domestic violence by signing this book to honor the memory of domestic violence homicide victims. 3 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Governor Bob Riley was sworn into office for a second term as Alabama s Chief Executive in January 2007, following a successful first term marked by great progress for the state. During those first four years, Gov. Riley made good on promises to improve education and to put Alabama s economy on the right track. Governor Riley successfully changed Alabama s economic development model. Alabama achieved record low unemployment rates, experienced the creation of more than 100,000 new jobs, and attained a record budget surplus. In fact, Alabama s strong economy has gained national recognition. Alabama s economic development was ranked number one of all 50 states and declared the best of the southern states for four consecutive years. Carole Warshaw, M.D., Executive Director of the Domestic Violence & Mental Health Policy Initiative and Director of the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma & Mental Health. Dr. Warshaw chaired the committee that wrote the AMA Guidelines on Domestic Violence and was a member of a National Research Council Committee on the Assessment of Family Violence Interventions. She is also a member of the AMA National Advisory Council on Family Violence. Dr. Warshaw speaks about domestic violence, trauma, mental health and psychiatric disabilities both nationally and internationally. She has published numerous articles and chapters on these issues and her writing has been translated into several languages. She is on the faculty in the Department of Medicine at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois. Oliver Williams, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Institute on Domestic Violence in the African American Community, and a Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota, in St. Paul. He is also the Director of the Safe Return Initiative that addresses the issues of prisoner reentry and domestic violence. He has worked in the field of domestic violence for more than twenty-nine years. Dr. Williams has worked in battered women s shelters, developed curricula for batterers intervention programs and facilitated counseling groups in these programs. He has provided training across the United States and abroad on research and service-delivery surrounding partner abuse. Dr. Williams extensive research and publications in scholarly journals and books have centered on creating service delivery strategies to support battered women and reduce violent behavior. Dr. Williams received a bachelor s degree in social work from Michigan State University; a Masters in Social Work from Western Michigan University; a Masters in Public Health and a PH.D in Social Work both from the University of Pittsburgh. Patti Bland, M.A., CCDC, currently directs the Train the Trainer Project for the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault in Juneau. Ms. Bland served as both advocate and lead chemical dependency counselor for New Beginnings, a shelter and community-based program in Seattle, for over 12 years. She developed the Domestic Violence/Chemical Dependency Outreach Project for King County at the Alcohol Drug Help Line in she served as the Domestic Violence Trainer for Providence Health System Family Violence Program in Washington State, as Adjunct Professor at Antioch University. Ms. Bland provides training and technical assistance addressing the intersection between domestic violence and substance abuse for programs across the nation. She has published several articles on chemical dependency and domestic violence and completed development of domestic violence curricula for the Washington State Medical Association and the Perinatal Partnership Against Domestic Violence. Recently Ms. Bland coauthored, with Debbie Edmund, Getting Safe and Sober: Real Tools You Can Use, an advocacy teaching kit for working with women coping with substance abuse and interpersonal violence. She is also the author of Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Curriculm for Advocates.
4 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Casey Gwinn, J.D., serves as the President of the National Family Justice Center Alliance. Casey has been recognized by the American Lawyer magazine a one of the top 45 public lawyers in America. Casey served for eight years as the elected City Attorney of San Diego from 1996 to Prior to entering elected office, Casey founded City Attorney s Child Abuse & Domestic Violence Unit, leading the unit from 1986 to 1996-prosecuting both misdemeanor & felony cases. In 1993, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges recognized his Child Abuse/Domestic Violence Unit as the model domestic violence prosecution unit in the nation. The Unit s work was honored for playing a major role in the 90 percent drop in domestic violence in San Diego over the last twenty years. Casey has served on the U.S. Attorney General s National Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women and the American Bar Association Commission on Domestic Violence. He has authored a host of articles on domestic violence and has co-authored two books on the Family Justice Center movement. Peter G. Jaffe., Ph.D., Professor in the Faculty of Education and Academic Director for the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women & Children at the University of Western Ontatio. He is the Director Emeritus for the Centre for Children & Families in the Justice System (London Family Court Clinic). He has co -authored nine books, 25 chapters and 75 articles related to children, families and the justice system including Children of Battered Women, Working Together to End Domestic Violence and Child Custody & Domestic Violence. Peter was the founding Chairperson of the London Coordinating Committee to End Woman Abuse and is currently actively involved in research on the impact of domestic violence on children. He has also been instrumental in the foundation of the Battered Women s Advocacy Clinic and is former chairperson of the Board of Directors. Peter has provided leadership in the development of violence prevention programs within the school system. Appointed to the Joint Committee on Domestic Violence to provide advice to the Attorney General on the implementation of the jury s recommendations. He is a founding member of Canada s first Domestic Violence Death Review Committee through the Office of Ontario s Chief Coroner. Sarah Tucker, a Technology Safety Specialist with Safety Net: The National Safe & Strategic Technology Project of the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV). Through training, technical assistance, and policy advocacy, she addresses all forms of technology that impact survivors of stalking, sexual violence and domestic violence. Over the past nine years, Sarah has worked to end domestic violence at the local, state, and national levels through outreach and education focused on underserved populations. She has provided hundreds of trainings to local, state, national and international audiences and has co-authored several articles on the use of technology and violence against women. She has fifteen years of experience providing computer literacy training, as well as experience in website design and maintenance. Ben Atherton-Zeman. Ben is a spokesperson for the National Organization for Men Against Sexism ( and is a public speaker on issues of violence prevention. He has performed his one-man play, Voices of Men in 43 states and Canada. He has given other presentations in several other states, China and the Czech Republic. Ben has spoken and performed at colleges, high schools, military installations public theatres, conference, houses of worship and juvenile detention facilities. For the past seventeen years, Ben has worked as a prevention educator for rape crisis centers, domestic violence programs, and state coalitions. He is an advisory board member for the White Ribbon Campaign in the United Kingdom.
