3 YOU ARE NEEDED!!! I Need Shares, Articles etc. to put onto this page. me colind@aaer.co.za Often, we just want to sit and do nothing. And why not. We go to meetings, work the Twelve Steps, read, make new friends. All this takes energy and means taking risk. Haven t we earned the right to just sit and take it a break from it all? No! In the past, we avoided life. Now we re becoming people of action. We take risk. We re becoming people who get involved in life. We practice caring about people and caring about ourselves. At times, we may complain, but we do what is needed to stay sober. We gain skills by doing. Why? We do it to save our lives. How? By trusting. We now trust that our Higher Power and friends will be there for us. They will help us push past our fears. As we practice daily how to stay sober, our skills grow. Prayer for the Day: Higher Power, Yours is a spirit of action. Allow me to become skilled at being active. Action for the Day: Today, I ll work at being active and alive. Maybe I ll start a new friendship or try a new meeting. 12 Promises for Beginners 1. You will know your full name and address. 2. You will be able to shave yourself, or put on your makeup, whichever pleases you. 3. You will be able to dress and undress yourself. 4. You will know the town, the state, and the country you live in. 5. You will be able to find socks that match, or nylons without runs. 6. You will be able to smoke without burning yourself, your clothes, or the furniture. 7. You will lose the fear of food. 8. You will be able to walk a straight line and pass the drunk driving test. 9. You will spend less time in the bathroom and be able to brush your teeth without gagging 10. You will lose the fear of police cars. 11. You will be able to answer the door without having to look through the peep hole. 12. You will realize what a hell of a mess you were, and thank God, or your HP for AA. A.A. Thought For The Month A.A. also helps us to hang onto sobriety. By having regular meetings so that we can associate with other alcoholics who have come through that same door in the wall, by encouraging us to tell the story of our own sad experiences with alcohol, and by showing us how to help other alcoholics. A.A. keeps us sober. Our attitude toward life changes from one of pride and selfishness to one of humility and gratitude. Am I going to step back through that door in the wall to my old helpless, hopeless, drunken life? I for one, will not!. A Member Shares: I'm Steve, an alcoholic. For years, my God was booze. I rejected God and religion at a young age. I felt I could never live up to the religious folks' standards, so why bother? I'd do it my way. I knew right from wrong, but my default was to do it the wrong way like I was powerless to overcome my defects even before I drank. At times, the only thing that saved me was the ability to b/s my way out of trouble until, in the end, I couldn't think straight and couldn't manage my life. I was screwed. I ended up at AA as desperate as the dying can be. Amazingly, I arrived at my first meeting 42 days off the drink knowing I needed to change, but no idea how I was going to do it. I had an idea that AA's way worked better than mine, so it was simple blind faith that what AA had would work for me if I applied myself. Unbeknown to me at the time, I had taken Step Three. Thank you for material that has been send to me, please try keep it as short as possible (without losing the message). I will keep them for future publication. Please keep it coming, we on the ER do appreciate it. Colin D. Eastrander Editor / Website Editor - colind@aaer.co.za

4 ARCHIVES EAST RAND - OUTREACH FOR ARCHIVE MATERIAL AA co-founder Bill W in a letter dated 1957 that AA s past was still veiled in the deep fog, he expressed a desire to preserve the Fellowship s original document and artefacts. We are trying, he wrote, to build up extensive records that will be of value to the future Historians it is highly important that the factual material be placed in our files in such a way that there can be no substantial distortion. In this light, it is important that we document our collective histories : - 1) so as not to forget where we come from; 2) as well as to inform the fellowship (especially the newcomers) of our rich heritage and history, 3) so that, against the background of this information, we are able to map out future strategies for our fellowship, 4) In order to effectively carry out our message Do you or your group or its members have material deemed to be historically valuable, administrative reports and minutes, personal correspondence, newsletters, books, photographs, etc., for inclusion into archives? We are the current custodians of AA's history. We need to compile our history so that future AA members will know of our glorious and miraculous past. You might not consider something of significance, but run it by your local archivist and he will determine whether it s of archival value or not. We have a common past - lets document it together! Like carrying the message to the still suffering alcoholic Let us carry our heritage as well... How it was? What happened? And what it is like now? Yours in Service Divia East Rand Archivist Mobile: Fax: divia108@gmail.com A Member Shares: Hi everyone, my name's Scott, and I am most definitely an alcoholic. I have 27 days today. 28 days ago, I was suffering really badly, and although I didn't drink, I shook and rattled for almost five days. This morning, I woke up and actually smiled. Not one of those paintedon-for-effect smiles either. It was a real, honest-to-god happy-to-be-alive smile. I have had various periods of "dryness" in AA, dating back to I was nineteen back then, and hadn't done a lot of "yets." I have done most of them today, lost count of the jobs and relationships I've lost, my kids don't bother to call today, all except one that is, and I don't get to see my grandkids. But I am sober. The difference in me today is I want to be here more than I need to be here. That's a big difference. Faith is important to me today along with my desire to be sober. It's taken me seven long years to get back after my last real drinking spree. I had three and a half years of sobriety and I blew it. I couldn't stop after that, and I got sicker and sicker. But today I took a nap. It was a contented sleep untroubled by dreams or nightmares, and it lasted five hours! My sobriety is something worth cherishing, and I cherish it very much. Thanks for listening. If you have any other ideas about the Eastrander or Website please let me know via colind@aaer.co.za
