1 Bethke, Donna From: UM SOM PTRS Sent: Wednesday, December 12, :02 PM To: Bethke, Donna Subject: The Chair's Chatter - 12/12/2018 December 12, 2018 The Chair's Chatter 1

2 Happy Holidays! The Chair's Chatter - Holiday Schedule Please note, due to the holidays, The Chair's Chatter will be on sabbatical until Wednesday, January 9th, Department News/Events National Opioid Crisis Community Summit Roy Film, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT was an invited speaker and content expert at the second annual National Opioid Crisis Community Summit at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland on December 11th, He presented a short talk entitled "Nonpharmacological Pain Management: Transforming Care to Combat the Opioid Crisis" and led a workshop to find actionable solutions to the opioid crisis on the local, state, and national levels. 2

3 In attendance at the Summit were US Surgeon General Jerome Adams, Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford, and a group of over 300 health care professionals, policymakers, military leaders, state politicians, and community leaders. Dr. Film spoke with US Surgeon General Jerome Adams about policies to increase the role of physical therapists in the early provision of nonpharmacological pain management for musculoskeletal injuries in addition to or in lieu of opioid intervention. Surgeon General Adams sees physical therapists as an essential part of the solution to the problem of opioid overprescribing and to the opioid crisis in general. The leadership at Aberdeen Proving Ground has invited Dr. Film to return for next year's summit. Over the course of the next year, he will be coordinating an action plan centered on promoting early access to physical therapy and other evidence-based nonpharmacological pain management approaches after musculoskeletal injury.
