1 The Blue Mantle Knights of Columbus Mater Dei Council Inside this issue: GK s Report 1 Knight of the Year 2 GAS in Numbers 2 Insurance 2 GAS Distribution 3-4 Special Olympics 4 Message Board 5 Calendar 5 The Rosary Hail, Mary! Full of grace, The Lord is with thee; Blessed are thou among women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now, and at the hour of our death. Amen GK s Report Knights Of Columbus Mater Dei Council # Here it is my first Grand Knight s report and I would be late but for the graces of Camille Ng allowing me to wait until after the GAS. This year s GAS was just that! Special congratulations and thanks go to Brother Tom Luxner whose organization and management of the event were superb. Having the extra time to set up and clean up took a ton of stress off and the atmosphere was much more relaxed. Of course, the culinary skills of PGK Don Titzman also helped to make the event more enjoyable. While I do not have a final income figure, I have been told that the gross income was between $13- $14,000. That means that we now have a large amount to go and help those less fortunate than ourselves. My sincere thanks to all who, in any way, contributed to the success of this year s GAS. Later this week, I will meet with our new Chancellor Joe Doane, and our new Deputy Grand Knight TJ Radovich to put the finishing touches on the calendar of events for the coming Columbian year. The preliminary versions are ambitious and I am sure the final will be, too. As soon as it is finalized July 2011 New Fraternal Year the schedule will be posted on the Council website for all to see and find some event to become involved in. If we are to be successful in our endeavor to provide something to attract each of you be a part of, you must do your part and be responsive to invitations to join us for our spiritual and social events and to requests for your effort in our service activities. Having raised four children, I understand the demands on our time, but surely each of us can find some time to step up and be part of our Council s activity schedule. Let me make my first invitation. We will install the new officers on July 16 following the 5:00 pm mass with a reception to follow in the Trumpet Room. Mark the date and plan to attend! Details will be on the website later this week. God Bless each of you, God Bless Holy Mother Church, God Bless Mater Dei and God Bless America!!! Vivat Jesus! Fraternally, Peter Anton Zaudtke, Sr, PGK, FDD Grand Knight
2 Page 2 July 2011 The Blue Mantle Knight of the Year Brother Knights, As one of my last acts as Grand Knight of Mater Dei Council, it is with great pleasure that I relate that I have selected Tom Luxner and Dick Bianchi as Knights of the Year for Columbian Year 7/1/10 to 6/30/11. I am also selecting the Luxner and Bianchi Families as The Families of the Year for the Council. During the past year Tom and Dick have been tireless in their efforts on the behalf of the Council. Their work, advice, and Prayers have sustained me. I want to thank their wives, Melissa and Elizabeth, for sharing their husbands with Mater Dei Council during the past year in which both Tom and Dick were away from their families long hours on behalf of the Council. Tom and Melissa have two daughters, Jane and Kate. Jane is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and recently received a Masters Degree in International Development from the London School of Economics. She is working for Senator Casey of Pennsylvania this summer in Scranton and pursuing a position in the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the Fall. Kate is a student in architecture at the University of Maryland. This summer she is studying in Italy. Dick and Elizabeth have a son, Matt, a physician, who is engaged in research and the practice of Medicine in Boston. Matt is a graduate of Brandeis University and earned a medical degree and a Ph.D in neurology from the University of Michigan. - Ted Tate, PGK Mater Dei Management Graybeard Gives Recent GAS High Marks Don Novotny, long time manager of Mater Dei's successful Tootsie Roll Campaigns, manager of last years Garage to Attic Sale, and enthusiast in getting Knights involved in Council activities, provided Grand Knight Ted Tate with the following notes on the recent GAS. - Total volunteers, 150, including 56 KofC members, 29 wives/widows, 21 youth; thus, 44 other, walk-ins. Prev. year, it was 55 knights, and 141 in total. - Total sale attendance, incl. workers, appr. 800 this year (thank you, Bill and Pat for doing the count); last yr, when we also had a head-count of MOST of the attendees, the total, incl. workers, was estimated at Men who this year deserve special mention are: Joe Matelis (who has seldom participated in events before, but this year was EVERYWHERE, offering to help, and enjoying it!); Brad Braford who at last minute took on housewares with his wife Melissa, and did excellent job; also, Gene Kelley, tireless, too, and not even/(yet?) a Knight; Daniel Rueda-Posada, who worked furiously in furniture, but elsewhere too as needed; and of course Jim Bogart. Also Kathy and Bob Stauffer, who come specially from PA every year (relatives of the Della Pennas), who helped LOADS for two solid days again this year. Also Eric Baumgartner, not currently member, but huge helper. Many others, BIG effort. Fraternal Benefits WHY BUY LIFE INSURANCE? Why should you buy life insurance anyway? Because if your wife does become a widow, funds are created automatically, immediately, and at the least possible cost. only life insurance will provide a steady income a guaranteed amount month after month. with a check coming in monthly, she can budget accordingly. life insurance gives her a precious freedom of choice: She can work if she wants to, as a hobby, not as a necessity. She can live with her grown children if she pleases as a welcome visitor. She can call on charitable agencies if she likes to offer help not to ask for help. Life insurance is nothing less than an expression of your respect, your concern and your love of your wife and your family. Just ask any widow. Call me today for an appointment. Fraternally, Rick Morin, FICF, LUTCF Your Fraternal Benefits Advisor
3 Page 3 July 2011 The Blue Mantle After the GAS - Where Does It All Go? ReStore resale outlets provide an environmentally and socially responsible way to keep good, reusable materials out of the waste stream while providing funding for Habitat s community improvement work. The mission of A Wider Circle is simple: to help individuals and families lift themselves out of poverty. Wow! What an event we had this year! While the proceeds and particulars of this year s GAS is still in the process of being tabulated and formatted, this might be a good opportunity to discuss how the donated items were preserved, packaged, and respectfully passed on for further use by other charities. It was thought that the spirit of these donated items that would become left over from GAS needed help for them to find other outlets for further use by others in need through other charitable organizations. Further, it might result in a win-win for the quick restoration of the Parish school and facility to its normal busy usage, and that left over donated items could still find purpose that would be most appreciated and gratifying to another organization. A number of groups were contacted before three were able to step forward to accept the invitation to be available to participate. They were (in the order of acceptance): ReStore from the Habitat for Humanity; A Wider Circle; and AM- VETS. Habitat s ReStore resale outlets sell reusable and surplus building materials to the public. Each day A Wider Circle provides basic need items to families transitioning out of shelters or simply living without life s necessities. They also go into low-income schools and shelters to lead educational workshops on topics ranging from healthy selfesteem and stress management to resume writing and financial planning. A Wider Circle recently be named one of the finest small charities Greater Washington has to offer by the Catalogue for Philanthropy. The Examiner described A Wider Circle as an all-inclusive reservoir of support for those in need an example of the grassroots movement at its best. AMVETS is one of the nation's foremost veterans service organizations (VSOs). It stands as a strong and influential advocate for America's veterans on important issues such as employment and training, mandatory funding for government-provided health care and other benefits to which they are entitled. AMVETS is a 501(c) 19 organization. AMVETS is dedicated to supporting veterans The ReStore outlet on on Gaither Road in Gaithersburg focuses on home improvement goods like furniture, home accessories, building materials and appliances. The ReStore outlet accepts donated goods which are sold to the general public at a fraction of the retail price. The proceeds help local Habitat affiliates fund the construction of Habitat homes within their communities. Promoting reuse and recycling and active military, providing community services and preserving freedom. But helping others is not limited to our fellow veterans. AMVETS members in more than 1,400 posts nationwide also promote and support quality of life community-service programs ranging from Special Olympics and ROTC to scouting and organdonor projects. Additionally, AMVETS returned on Monday (6/27) and took a few remaining items as well. As you can see, these groups reflect very much the charitable thoughts and efforts much like our own. It was an honor to pass on donations made to (Continued on next page)
4 Page 4 July 2011 The Blue Mantle our GAS to find new opportunities to be used. At the end of the GAS it is a very exciting, but terribly exhausting time to package and move materials left over from the initial setup and sales. To be able to receive assistance from other charitable organizations from having agreed to send a truck and perhaps volunteers to actually arriving and fully participating was an awesome site to behold and to be a part of. God Bless the Organizers of the 2011 GAS, and to this year s charitable organizations: ReStore, A Wider Circle, and the AMVETS. Please consider contacting them and/ or providing donations to their cause as well, and be on the look out through the year for programmed talks by representatives from these groups regarding their work, volunteer opportunities, and the like. Best Wishes and Peace. TJ Radovich, DGK (elect) Special Olympics First picture on the left: PGK Ted Tate, Pam Yerg / Area Director Sp.
