1 Minutes of the October 12, 2005 Meeting 5:00 pm until 7:30 pm Barry T. Brown Health Education Center Voorhees, New Jersey Present: 26 members of whom 5 were new members Ms. Maria Clark, joins as an individual who comes from a family very much effected by cancer and who want to build a family response. Ms. Pauline Cellier is a Breast Cancer survivor, and the founder of a new boutique and a new 501C3 Begin Again Breast Cancer. Rev Tom Johnson-Medland with the Lighthouse Hospice, Mr. Peggy Griffiths of the Parish Nurses Council, and Ms. Colleen Thornton from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society attended for the first time as well. Thank you for all members who survived traveling through the thunderstorms, and joined us for a wonderful dinner and meeting at the Barry T. Brown Health Education Center in Voorhees. Agenda: 1. Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez was unable to attend because of illness. Ms. Ann Biondi, Director of Personal Health Services at the Department of Health and Human Services addressed the group, and updated the members on the Camden County DHHS programs in Health Education, Prevention and Screening. There will be the launch of a year long campaign with the Goal: To increase the proportion of Camden County residents who seek early detection procedures that can save lives through information, education and empowerment. There will be a kick-off event the first week in November. Our Camden County Cancer Coalition Workgroup on Eliminating Health Disparities / CEED Workgroup is part of this initiative. (see below) 2. The Prostate Net s First Annual In the Know Awards for Eliminating Health Disparities recognized with an Honorable Mention, Doug Marshall, from Fox Chase Virtua Health Cancer Program. Doug was not able to attend the New York breakfast on September 9 th. We were able to surprise him with a presentation of the award, knowing it is very true that Doug is recognized for going beyond the routine to change health disparities of all kinds within medically underserved or minority communities by his demonstrated leadership, implementation of novel strategies and/or commitment in time, energy, and resources. 3. Workgroup Reports: a). Eliminating Health Disparities / CEED Workgroup met in August two time to discuss how we will use the NCIS Consumer Health Profiles to do a pilot project in the county using the marketing strategies from the profiles. Next meeting for the Eliminating Health Disparities / CEED Workgroup January 9 th 10:00 am until Noon 3 Cooper Plaza free parking in the garage at the 3 Cooper Plaza Building Decision: The Coalition members agreed in a consensus vote to having the pilot project for increase cancer screening. Goal: To increase Cancer Screening Rate in Camden County for Breast and Cervical Cancer in women; Prostate Cancer in men; Colorectal Cancer in men and women. Plan: Target the three largest marketing groups of medically underserved men and women over the age of 40. One of these groups includes Camden City and near by municipalities for 15,203 persons and the other two groups target 14,296 persons in scattered areas of Suburban Camden County. Baseline: We have the BRFSS estimates for Camden County based on the NJ BRFSS of those two years. We will have the Camden County BRFSS, the first time a sample is drawn only on the county, with special reference to minority and ethnic groups, particularly in Camden City. (see handout of BRFSS given out at the meeting) Start Date: February 2006 Strategies: As part of the Camden County One-Year Campaign, the CEED program and the County CA screening efforts will be part of a quarterly visit to the six largest municipalities in the county: Camden City; Cherry Hill; Gloucester Township; Winslow Township; Pennsauken; Voorhees. We hope to include
2 Mammography Vans for these site visits. We may use those shopping malls that have County Stores and programs for residents. CEED will participate in the Flu Campaign sites with literature and some site tables. b.) Lung Cancer / Smoking Cessation Workgroup met to define further the Pilot Project on Adolescent Smoking Cessation which will be school-based. Confirmed schools for the project are The Camden Center for Youth Development, the former Juvenile Resource Center and the Brimm Medical Arts High School, both in Camden City. Appointments are set with the Assistant Principal at the Haddon Township High School and another school in Winslow Township. The program that we will use is Youth: Quit2Win which is part of a UMDNJ project for Adolescent Health Care in New Brunswick. Patricia Hearey, Camden County DHHS has been trained and teachers from the other schools are also being invited for the training. The discussions to have a Smoking Cessation program sponsored by the FQHC CAMcare which would work with the Quit Center at Kennedy are continuing. Next Meeting for Lung Cancer / Smoking Cessation Workgroup: December 6, 2005 Tuesday 12 noon to 1:30 pm Lunch will be served Barry T. Brown Health Education Center, Voorhees, New Jersey c.) Tri-County Workgroup presented their flyer to Hold the Date! The name of the educational and information event is: The Big C: Current Trends in Cancer Control. Date: Thursday April 27 th 2006 Place: TBA Target Group: 200 Primary Care Health Providers with CMEs available The next meeting of the Tri-County Workgroup is December 21 st 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at CPAC, 6981 N. Park Drive, East Bldg 3 rd floor, Pennsauken, NJ Contact: Hilary Colbert to join in the planning of this event. d.) Camden City Urban Cancer Initiative of the American Cancer Society has had two planning group meetings in September. The names of the Camden County Cancer Coalition members who expressed interest in March 2005 in this ACS Cancer Initiative have been submitted to the planning group. The idea of having a special workgroup to help with the initiative and as a part of the contribution of the Camden County Cancer Coalition has been represented at these meetings. 4. Discussion about Future Coalition Dates: It is apparent that having meetings at early breakfast time; lunch time; or supper evening time brings about the same number of members. Decision: to continue to rotate the time for the quarterly meetings. Please keep these dates free! January 25, 2006 Wednesday Time - Breakfast Meeting 8:00 am until 10:00 am Virtua Hospital April 26, 2006 Wednesday- Lunch Time 11:00 to 1:00pm Cooper Hospital July 26, 2006 Wednesday Evening Meeting - 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm -Virtua Hospital October 25, 2006, Wednesday Breakfast Meeting 8:00 am until 10:00 am Cooper Hospital NOTE: The Workgroups will set their future meetings at their next meetings given above, usually on a monthly basis or as needed. 5. Member Sharing: We heard from Ms. Pauline Cellier and the new business, through her boutique, is to help women get started again after the treatment of Breast Cancer. Rev. Tom Johnson-Medland spoke about the initiative which was started with the Gloucester Cancer Coalition. A Youth Health Ambassador for Cancer badge could be part of Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts or any youth group e.g. R.E.B.E.L. The concept paper has been developed with ten steps to be eligible as a Youth Ambassador, and is being considered at the state level. He also stressed the need to include Long Term Care providers in the Cancer Coalition efforts. Thank you to everyone for their participation. Minutes prepared by Jean F. Mouch, MD, MPH
