2 3. Review of Meeting Notes 4. Chronic Disease Conference 5. Upcoming Presentations for the Rural Health Public Health Conference 6. Program Evaluation Update Meeting notes from the in-person meeting were sent out to steering committee members prior to the conference call date, with no requests to make edits or provide additions to the notes by those present on the call. Conference location: Bismarck Ramkota Inn Dates: May 20 & 21 st (Monday & Tuesday) We are getting close to finalizing all the speakers for the conference. The NDCC business meeting will take place on Monday May 20 th over the noon hour. Monday is the day that has the cancer focus. Registration costs are $50.00 for one day and $75.00 for two days. Scholarships will be available to support travel and lodging costs. We are in the process of applying for CMEs, looking at up to 12 contact hours for the two days. See the attached agenda. The Rural Health Public Health conference will be held June 5-7 th. Joyce and Deanna Askew will be the presenters for one of the concurrent sessions with the topic focused on environmental and systems change approaches. Krista Headland and a representative from Disease Control will be presenting for one of the concurrent sessions addressing strategies to increase HPV vaccination rates. Cancer Patient Survey o The Individual cancer patient surveys are in the process of being collected during the month of January. o Analysis of the responses will be completed in February and will report back on results during the March conference call. o 7 of the 10 cancer centers are participating in this project. Burden of Cancer Report o Kyle Muus, contractor for the project, has begun work on the project. o We are planning for three major products for the burden report; a professional report to be used for grant writing, reports and sharing with decision makers, a general public report that has limited key data points and more personal information and a two page report to be used for meetings, legislators and other key partners who want major data information only. NDCCCP/NDCC Evaluation Plan Activities Workgroup Evaluation o 100 responses o Key results: overall high levels of involvement, satisfaction, and benefits. However, only 79.7% agreement with statement I am actively involved with Jesse Tran 2
3 7. Update on the Special Evaluation Projects committees and workgroups. Individuals who reported working in hospitals, clinics, etc. (outside of a cancer center) reported lowest levels of involvement with a mean of 4.0.Respondents reported major benefits of participating in workgroups as: networking and collaboration (54%), learning and education (39%) and making a difference and accomplishing meaningful goals (30%). o Key recommendations: Assess the ways in which NDCC members are engaged. Offer additional opportunities outside of monthly workgroup conference calls for members to be involved. Incorporate major benefits of networking/learning/accomplishing meaningful goals into activities. Get feedback from those working in hospitals, clinics, etc. (not within a cancer center) on what barriers they face to involvement and what activities would appeal most to them and allow them maimum involvement. Determination of the Cancer Plan Usage and Implementation of Priority Objectives o This project will be conducted via survey of NDCC member organizations and individual members. o Plan to conduct this survey in February. Evaluation of the program (the NDCC sub-contract program formerly known as the community grant program) o This will be done by the Data/Evaluation Committee this coming spring. o Focus is assessment if projects are focused on implementation of priority objectives and inclusion of evidence based interventions. Barnes County ON THE MOVE Evaluation Project o Analysis of the adult focus groups are in process o We can epect a draft journal article by April or early May with these results o Applications to present at a variety of conferences about this program and the evaluation project are ongoing Standing Rock Men s and Women s Cancer Screening Program Evaluation Project o The application to the Aberdeen Area Indian Health Services IRB committee was re-submitted the week of Christmas, we are waiting for a response before we can proceed with any work on the evaluation project Joyce 8. SECAP Study We can anticipate the final results within the net month. Joyce We will be developing a plan to utilize the results of this study for the coming program year. 9. Bone Marrow The pilot bone marrow donor drive will be held on the Fort Krista 3
4 Donor Drive 10. NDCC Website Update 11. NDCC Workgroup Update Berthold reservation in New Town on January 30. It will be a community event with the marrow donor drive as the main feature, but other booths/information will be available for attendees as well We are hoping to get a good turnout of younger people (ages 18-44) who are interested in becoming potential donors. The Fort Berthold Tribal Council passed a tribal resolution in support of the drive and have offered their support, which will mean a lot to the community and encourage people to attend. We will report on the event during our March call. There is now verbiage on the NDCC website that says The North Dakota Cancer Coalition reserves the right to approve all content posted to this site. Coalition members may request to post content, but final approval must be given by North Dakota Department of Health staff. For questions regarding site content, please call This verbiage was approved by the ND Dept of Health Public Information Officer. Prevention o The HPV vaccination subgroup has finished and distributed the two different powerpoint presentations, to be used to educate healthcare providers and parents/students about the HPV vaccination. The group will now begin working with vaccination providers who have low HPV vaccination completion rates to help them implement strategies to increase their rates. o The UV protection subgroup is working on recruiting ND high schools to have students sign a no indoor tanning pledge before prom. We hope to garner some media attention through the pledge drives. o The Tobacco subgroup is working on ways to promote NDQuits to dental professionals, pharmacists, etc. Screening/Early Detection o The screening event toolkit subgroup continues to work on the colorectal cancer screening toolkit. o The Navigating screening guidelines subgroup completed activities for cervical cancer screening, including promotion of cervical cancer screening to all medical association members with the support of Dr. Leitch. They will begin working on components to promote colorectal cancer screening in preparation for March as colorectal cancer awareness month. Treatment o The treatment workgroup will be meeting this month to review the cancer center staff results again and develop a plan for net steps. Krista Krista & Joyce 4
5 12. Environmental & Systems Approaches Training 13. Coordinated Chronic Disease Program Update Survivorship o The survivorship workgroup is beginning the process of looking into possible hospice train the trainer workshops that could be used to train Tribal Health staff from the Reservations on providing end of life care to family members; the Tribal Health staff could then train families to provide end of life care as needed. We are planning to conduct four trainings through June of this year with the first training planned for February 8th in Bismarck. o These trainings will be ongoing over the net two years. See the attached agenda and course objectives. Joyce is in process of applying continuing education with the Board of Nursing. With the departure of Susan Mormann from the Heart Disease and Stroke Program to the Cancer Division, Karalee is transitioning into the role of managing the Heart Disease and Stroke Program as well as continuation as the Division Director for the Chronic Disease Division. Deanna Askew will be assuming the role of program director the Coordinated Chronic Disease Program. None 14. Other Points of Discussion 15. Net Steps NA 16.
