2 From the Convenor Hey there! In November 2017, UN Youth New South Wales is hosting the inaugural Junior Leadership Weekend for 100 students from across NSW. These Year 7 and Year 8 students will get to experience engaging workshops, watch inspiring guest speakers (including Minister for Education, Rob Stokes) and learn practical leadership skills to make changes in their community and the wider world. The theme for Junior Leadership Weekend is Bridging the Education Divide and we will be focussing on education inequality on a national and international level. My name s Georgia, and I m the Convenor of Junior Leadership Weekend. I m joined by four of my brilliant colleagues who form the Organising Committee: Olivia, Nicole, Han Joo and Nicola, and we re all incredibly excited to tell you more about the conference. Over the weekend of the 25th - 26th of November 2017 you will join us, and 100 of your peers, in what promises to be an educational, engaging and exciting weekend! We ll try and answer some of the big questions: Why is education so important? Who currently suffers from education inequality? What can we do to help? This pack will provide you with some more information about the weekend. You ll find some details on the itinerary, costs and information on our welfare procedures to ensure we keep everyone safe while we are at the conference. 3 About Us About UN Youth Australia UN Youth Australia is a national youth led organisation, coordinated entirely by young volunteers aged We are dedicated to educating young people about international relations, providing an avenue for the expression of youth opinion and empowering young people to engage with society. Through its eight divisions in each state and territory, UN Youth Australia provides an impressive array of events each year for secondary and tertiary students centred around global affairs. 5 How do I register? Simply head to the website below to fill out your registration form: Welfare Policies At UN Youth, we are committed to ensuring that all participants at our events are safe and supported. We have a comprehensive welfare policy that applies to all our events; it can be found at unyouth.org.au/legal All volunteers at our conference will have a Working With Children Check. There will be a Welfare team at JLW (comprised of a: Welfare Arbitrator, Head of Welfare and Welfare Officers) who will all have Senior First Aid Training, with some also having Mental Health First Aid Training. UN Youth also prepares risk management plans for all of our activities. It is important that all welfare information is disclosed to us so that we can arrange things and ensure that the facilitator team is able to assist everyone in having a positive experience on the conference. These details will be required upon registration.
