Pathways developed the highly successful Housing Firs: program that provides immediate access to permanent supported housing to individuals who are homeless and who have mental health and addiction problems. The program uses a person-centered harm reduction approach to housing and services. The success of this approach has created a paradigm shift in the operation of supportive housing. Pathways' Housing First programs now operate across the US, Canada and Europe. The program is included in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration's (SAMHSA's) National Registry of Evidence Based Programs. Pathways' has received recognition and numerous awards including the American Psychiatric Association's Gold Award in the area of community mental health. Dr. Tsemberis is a clinical-community psychologist and is 011 the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center. He currently serves as principal investigator for several federally funded studies of homelessness, mental illness, and addiction, and has published numerous articles and book chapters on these topics. He recently published (Nov. 2010) the Housing First manual by Hazelden Press. Plenary Friday June 10, ~m Susan Musante, LPCC Susan.Musante is currently the director for Soteria-Alaska and CHOICES, Ine. Both of these programs are peer-run stand alone rron profits and are considered alternatives to the conventional mental health system in Alaska because of the beliefs and values that drive the services. Ms. Musante believes that all people can recover from mental illness and that people should have choice and decision-making powers regarding their own road to recovery. Susan has more than 25 years working experience in mental health and recovery and has made numerous presentations on recovery, rehabilitation and empowerment. Teaching manuals that she has written include: Peer Practuioner Training: A Learning Partnership and NM Behavioral Health Services Benefits Tech/lira! Assistance Manual, Supported EmpJoymmt Handbook. Prior to moving to Alaska, Susan was instrumental in barring the passage of a Forced Outpatient Treatment bill through her involvement with the New Mexico Advocates for Treatment Solutions and the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Association. She has also been involved in the start up of several mental health peer provided services including The] eff Revels Albuquerque Drop In Center and the Peer Bridger services at the University of New Mexico Mental Health Center.
