Discovering Headway During our 44 year history, making connections has been part of what has made Headway Emotional Health Services the effective, responsive organization it is today. Our staff s connectedness along with their passion, innovation, focus and continuing desire to learn have contributed to our continued success and growth as a highly responsive human service nonprofit. Because of this, 2013 was no exception. In fact, it was a year of incredible growth because of our successful connections, including partnerships with several new schools and school districts and expanded relationships with others, for a record 37 schools served by Headway therapists. We also partnered with other quality community-based organizations such as Youthlink and the Minnesota Aids Project to provide creative, efficient, and effective services that mean a greater likelihood of success for the clients we strive to help. Patrick Dale, CEO Our focus on connectedness also resulted in marked growth in the number and diversity of the people we served in We helped nearly 15% more individuals and families across our program spectrum with a greater proportion than ever coming from communities of color and diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. The single most important reason for our success in 2013? Our staff. Meeting the needs of individuals and families requires passion, empathy, creativity, and teamwork and the dedication and commitment of our staff in those arenas is indeed inspiring. In 2013, feedback from our clients, those who refer them to us and from our community partners shows that the people of Headway make an extraordinary difference in the lives of those they are helping. We are grateful and indebted to them for their dedication to making a difference for everyone who walks through our doors. Charlotte Frank, Board President, Ernst & Young LLP We are also indebted to our current supporters who have helped us continue our mission to make a difference this past year in thousands of individuals and families lives. We trust you will remain committed to Headway after reading and experiencing the difference your support is generating. We are extremely excited and optimistic as we move forward in We are innovative and passionate professionals Swho serve emotional, mental, and relational health needs throughout the community. Our programs and services support children, adolescents and adults who are looking for understanding, hope and stability. PAGE Annual Report

Connecting the Dots When Students Need Help, Headway is There With the addition of several new or expanded school contracts last year, Headway therapists now serve children and adolescents in 37 schools in five school districts and individual schools around the metro area. In 2013: Anoka-Hennepin School District 11 contracted Headway to provide outpatient therapy to develop and run a school-based mental health program expanding from one to 15 full-time licensed clinicians who work collaboratively with school staff in 19 schools. Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 renewed and expanded its contract with Headway for the fourth year in a row so that 15 of our therapists now provide mental health services in 15 schools. Perpich Center for Arts Education/Crosswinds Arts and Science School contacted Headway about creating a program split between the two campuses, and has since expanded the program. Our onsite presence means families no longer have to arrange for clinical mental health services outside of school, rearrange work schedules, or take time off to bring the child to the appointment. A student s health insurance pays for the cost of therapy, but if they are uninsured or underinsured district funds cover it. Conflict I had second therapy session this week with a young girl whose parents are in the middle of a high conflict divorce situation. She has been exhibiting a great deal of anxiety and could not calm down at all in session on Monday. Today we met and she created a collage of safe, calm pictures. We used this to do a guided meditation with her using one of the pictures to create a story about her walking through a snow covered forest into a little house with a fire in the fireplace and having some hot chocolate and curling up with a great book. After the meditation, her eyes were sparkly and bright and she said That was so nice! Headway School-Based Therapist to Calm 2013 Annual Report PAGE 3

Personally Connected Record Staff Expansion Means Greater Reach to Families and Individuals Ultimately, reaching more people who need help simply means having more staff to serve them. In 2013, Headway grew our case management and outpatient staff from 99 to 143 our largest staff expansion ever which meant we could help more than 21,000 struggling individuals and families in the Twin Cities metro area and beyond. Chaos Sean* was referred to Headway for Case Management services due to severe childhood trauma. Initially, Sean would not talk or sit still with his case manager, preferring to stand, jump around and climb things wherever they were meeting. He attended several different treatment centers and with the help of his Children s Mental Health- Targeted Case Manager, he is now mainstreamed in school and is able to have calm, competent conversations with others. Mother of Headway Client *name has been changed Hurting I have worked with Kyle* as his Children s Mental Health-Targeted Case Manager for three years now. When I started working with Kyle and his family, Kyle s mental health issues were so severe that his mother was unable to hold employment due to his frequent hospitalizations. Now, Kyle has been attending school at an alternative center, and his attendance and behaviors are such that he is set to transition into his mainstream school. With this turnaround in his mental health, his mother is able to work again and support the family. Headway CMH-Targeted Case Manager *name has been changed to Calm to Thriving PAGE Annual Report

Community Connections Headway Helps Partners Fill the Gaps Headway has always sought ways to partner with other organizations who help people in our community who need it most but have a hard time accessing it. Last year, we formed or continued the following partnerships that contributed to a record number of free or reduced-fee therapy hours we provided to people in the Twin Cities metro*: MN AIDS Project helps Minnesotans understand the risks of HIV and helps those living with the virus obtain care and services that improve outcomes and prevent new infections. Offerings range from HIV testing to case management to increasing access to healthcare. Two Headway therapists now see MN AIDS Project clients two days each week, four hours each day, providing intakes and individual therapy. RS Eden provides residential and outpatient chemical dependency treatment for men and women throughout the Twin Cities metro. Headway continued its commitment to the organization dedicating the same therapist there, 30 hours per week. Oasis for Youth provides resources and services to homeless and precariously housed youth, 16 to 21 years of age, in Bloomington, Richfield and Edina. Since 2013, Headway has provided onsite mental health services at their Bloomington location. YouthLink operates a drop in center, housing units and has a wide variety of programs that work with homeless young adults (ages 18 to 23). Since June 2013, Headway has provided mental health services and chemical health assessments for their clientele. *Headway collects third party insurance fees when possible so that we can provide services free of charge to those who don t have insurance. My daughter s journey with Headway has been long and successful. She was able to receive good grades, which never happened in the past. She was able to exercise leadership by being a role model for new adolescents that came into the Day Treatment program again, something we hadn t seen before. In addition, we have seen more emotion and more conversation from her, another first. So we would personally like to thank you, your staff and the teachers for their part in our daughter s success! 2013 Annual Report PAGE 5

How Did We Measure Up in 2013? At Headway, we measure success by our ability to connect with and heal the people who need us. Take a look. 17,000 hrs 8,500 people $11,500 54,000 Number of service hours we provided throughout the Twin Cities. 21,000 Number of individuals and families we served. $310,000 Value of free and reduced services Headway provided to uninsured or under-insured clients. 1% 7% 1% 16 schools 2068 youth 4% = 93% Percentage of former clients who felt Headway helped them succeed. 51% Percentage of our clients 18 years old or younger. 94% Percentage of caregivers who felt we were doing an excellent job helping their children. 61 Number of schools which received Headway services throughout the metro area. 3,018 Number of youth served by our in-school therapists. 17% Percentage of in-school services provided for free to uninsured or under-insured children and their families. 83% Percentage of children and adolescents we worked with who improved their school attendance. 89 youth 102 teens 478 Number of children and adolescents for whom we provided Case Management. 1,061 Number of teens for whom we provided Adolescent Diversion Services. 8 2013 Board of Directors Headway s mission is advanced by our dedicated Board of Directors, who not only share a passion for transforming lives and strengthening our communities, but give their time and resources to provide us with oversight and direction. We cannot thank them enough for their tireless efforts and assistance. One day when I was meeting with her, she decided to go running not for exercise, but to get away. I decided to meet her on her level and meet her where she was at, and so I ran after her and we went running together. It may not seem like much, but during our little run, the walls between us came down and she opened up to me and we were able to connect and I was able to help her get what she needed. Now my client is in school, is passing her UAs, and has a job. Children s Mental Health Targeted Case Manager PAGE Annual Report
