1 Volume 86, Issue 3 September 2008 Governor s Message Dear Fellow Lions, We Serve. It has been our organizations motto since 1954 and it is still very appropriate. Along with our International President Al Brandel, we are emphasizing service during this Lions year. It is not all about work though. It is also about having fun and enjoying the company of our fellow members. The first round of Region Meetings is now behind us. If you attended, you know that things were a bit different than in the past. More information was passed in the Presidents & Secretaries meeting (which is open to all Lions) and there were fewer reports given in the General Session. At two of the meetings we had Lion Jim Palacio as Tail Twister to keep us on our toes. I even paid a fine or two. All in the name of having more fun and enjoying our experience in Lionism. Our Fall Conference Committee is working hard to prepare a great event for us. They have planned a golf tournament for Friday followed by an Oktoberfest celebration. We have exciting, hands-on classes planned for Saturday morning. Attending these classes will teach you about our great Lions Medical Eye Bank, about products for the visually impaired, how to apply for a grant through the Charity Foundation and include a demonstration of Project Lifesaver. Following this we will have lunch where we will be privileged to hear as our speaker, Marie Ringler, granddaughter of Dale Carnegie, originator of the self improvement movement. If you have ever had the opportunity to hear Marie you know how inspirational she can be. Of course, in the afternoon we will conduct business as we hold a District Meeting, but then at our banquette we will celebrate the events of the weekend and be addressed by PID Scott Storms, who with his wife Lion Dale will be our guests for the weekend. And let s not forget, we will have hospitality rooms hosted by our candidates for Vice District Governor. These are a great chance to meet the candidates and learn where they see Lionism heading in the future. What a weekend! We Serve. We work hard and that is important. But we also play hard and that is also important because it keeps us enthused and provides balance. So as we work our Miracles through Service, let s remember we have breaks coming and take advantage of them to recharge our batteries and our friendships. Let s play! Yours in Lionism, Lion Doug 1

6 WBLC/ Churchland Youth Exchange Luncheon 17 July 2008 Article submitted by Lion Ray Cicirelli, Youth Exchange Committee Chair This year thirty youth attended the Youth Exchange Camp from Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Croatia, Denmark, England, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Turkey, and the USA were represented. One of the German campers had a birthday on the day of our Youth Exchange Luncheon. This year s luncheon was a little different because the Olive Garden restaurant in Chesapeake Square Mall provided (for free) pasta marinara, salad, and bread sticks. These were well received by the campers and the Lions who were there. This was supplemented by lasagna provided by Lions Monica, Irv, and Duckie, and luscious desserts from Lions Barbara M., Penny, Lyle (actually his wife, Jamie), Carole, Ellen, and Noel. Several lions donated money that was used to purchase lots of hand held fruit. Campers had snacks for the rest of their stay, as they left with all the leftover fruit and deserts. There were a number of Lions at the luncheon to help set up, bring food and drink, help with the clean up, etc. We also had some guests. Lion Barbara M. had two grandchildren there as did Lions Clayt and Barbara S. Lions Ray and Peg had a former YE camper, now an International Student at TCC, Bulgan (from Mongolia), as a guest and helper. Lion Dan was going to be at the luncheon, since he and his family are hosting one of the youth, but work interfered. Lion Penny had her son drop off her goodies and met some of the LIONS. Unfortunately, neither he nor Penny could stay. Thanks to all who helped in any way! Got time to take a survey? 11 Sight & Hearing Van Has a Busy New Year Lion s year was a busy year with 58 days on the road in 50 trips, and Lion s year is shaping up to be even busier. In the first three months the van has 17 trips scheduled for a total of 25 days of screening compared with 13 trips and 18 days for the same period last year. Keep up the good work, 24D!! 28 of our clubs booked the van last year I d like to see that number go over 30 this year. Our drive for fund-raising pledges for van replacement is still underway. I will be happy to come to your club and talk about the van, the new efforts we have underway and what the van replacement fund is all about. Our S&H Van exists to help YOU SERVE your communities you deserve to know what we re doing! Give me a call at home ( ) or on my cell ( ) if you d like a program on the van. There have been some questions about what the van replacement will be. To be perfectly honest, we don t know yet (it s still 10 years away!). We know that there will be some re-arrangement of the interior space to solve some of the crowding we experience in our current van, and that we will address some technical problems such as the inadequate sound proofing of our sound booths. But we re staying wide open for different solutions as our needs may change over the next few years, and we may come up with a different way of satisfying your needs as we listen to your inputs. What we DO know is that it will take some serious money, and we want to be ahead of the financial power curve when we get there. A really good news story is that we ve been accepted into the South Hampton Roads Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Our number for that campaign is 65444, and we will be listed in the CFC pamphlet as an available choice. If you re in the military or a government employee, you can assign all or part of your CFC contribution to our Van!! Let your military or government friends know as well!! I must say, I goofed up (a little bit) on this I only got us on the Southside CFC; I failed to get us on the Peninsula CFC. But I ll fix that next year! Thank you, Lions of 24D, for your loyal support of YOUR Sight & Hearing Van. Let s make this our BEST service year yet! Lion Sol Sherfey, President of LMSHU Inc. The Melvin Jones Award was presented to Sight & Hearing Van President and Zone C Chair, Lion "Sol" Sherfey for his years of outstanding service to Lionism by District Governor Doug Mueller at the Region II Meeting held on August 20, 2008 Congratulations, Sol! 10

12 Article submitted by PDG, DG Don Colley District 24-C Short History. In June 1978, the International Association of Lions Clubs introduced a program called "Hearing and Speech Action and Work with the Deaf." In response to this initiative, Lion Kenneth S. Hitch from Clifton, Virginia, Immediate Past District Governor of District 24-A, contacted Dr. Robert W. Cantrell, then Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. They agreed to explore the formation of an organization dedicated to Lions-supported research on deafness and hearing. They formed a committee to pursue this idea, consisting of representatives from each of the six Lions Club districts in Virginia along with three University of Virginia medical personnel. A resolution to form the "Lions of Virginia Hearing Foundation & Temporal Bone Bank" resulted from these meetings. The Lions of Virginia approved the resolution as did the University of Virginia School of Medicine, thus establishing a new hearing-research organization. In August 1989, the words "temporal bone bank" were dropped from the foundation s name. Because research had discovered that artificial ear bones can be better used for transplants than human bones without the risk of transferring diseases, the emphasis shifted from being a temporal bone bank (a facility that houses temporal bones) to a research center. The Hearing Foundation is currently supported almost entirely by the Lions of Virginia. Since the formation of the Hearing Foundation, Lions Clubs in Virginia s six districts have contributed about $2,500,000 to the Foundation in support of its objectives. Donations from the general public and businesses are gratefully accepted. Objectives. The principal objectives of the Virginia Lions Hearing Foundation and Research Center, Inc., are To initiate and support hearing research on deafness and hearing problems in all age groups. Basic Research: Ototoxicity (drug damage); noise damage; electrical stimulation of auditory nerves; regeneration of hair cells. Clinical Research: Study of temporal bone anatomy and testing of new surgical procedures and/or implantable devices concerned with ear diseases and hearing disorders. To support the cochlear implant program for the rehabilitation of profound deafness in children and adults. To conduct diagnostic clinical examinations, which may result in surgery (e.g., cochlear implant) or other rehabilitative processes (e.g.. hearing aids) to restore partial or complete hearing to individuals. To conduct informational programs to educate the public on hearing disorders and to encourage hearing protection. To initiate educational programs for ear surgeons on the latest surgical techniques to better care for hearing impaired individuals throughout Virginia and beyond. Lions Clubs International is participating in the AARP National Convention to help get the message out about what Lions are doing. The convention will take place: September 4-6, 2008 Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. Those of you that are planning on attending the AARP Convention 50+, please stop by and visit the Lions Clubs International booth, 1150, for more information and a free gift. 12

13 District 24D Telephone Answering System Please help us once again make this system a reliable means of contact in our communities is listed in your phone directory and costs the District $52 per month, including the line and listing. Maintenance of the system is also paid through the District's budget. Last year this was over $250 for line repair. In the past, community social service people, churches, school nurses, and individuals used the number to reach the appropriate club for referrals but when the system became unreliable and was erratic (for about a year) most finally gave up and its usage dropped off. Last year the District took action to reestablish a reliable system with accurate information and now all updates that are received are made within a couple of days. The cost of the new system was underwritten by the Lions Charity Foundation of 24D(a little over $1500) and operation was reinstated in the fall of last year. We need the $20 requested from each club to keep this community contact system functioning. Please contact: Lion Mike Keelean at mrkeelean@fbw.com or by phone # with any changes, comments, complaints, or suggestions you may have. Changes WILL be made quickly. Please identify your Club and the specific change requested when calling. Lion Mike Keelean - District Sight Conservation Chairman Oceanside Lions Club Charter Meeting Gov. 15 A letter from Lion Lee Talley - Portsmouth DAC Center Children First Lions Club Fellow Lions, I am writing to urge you to support HB-83, the autism insurance reform bill that will be before the State Insurance Mandate Commission for consideration September 29, This bill sponsored by Delegate Robert Bob Marshall, will end insurance discrimination for children with autism and provide them with the necessary medical health coverage they need. Facts about Autism 1 in 150 children is diagnosed with autism 1 in 94 boys is on the autism spectrum 67 children are diagnosed per day A new case is diagnosed almost every 20 minutes More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes & cancer combined Autism continued: Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. Autism costs the nation over $90 billion per year, a figure expected to double in the next decade Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases Boys are four times more likely than girls to have autism There is no medical detection or cure for autism I can attest to the need for intensive early intervention. My son has made amazing progress with intense therapy; however, we are going under with the intense financial burden. All families no matter of socioeconomic status are hit equally with the same intense financial burden. We all continue to do what we can because our children are worth it. They deserve to have the best life possible. You can make that happen. This bill is a common sense and fiscally responsible way of helping families in Virginia access health care services that they are currently excluded from due to their child s autism diagnosis. I urge you to help end this blatant discrimination by supporting HB-83. Please call the following legislators and urge them to support this bill: Senator George L. Barker (D) district39@sov.state.va.us Senator A. Donald McEachin (D) district09@sov.state.va.us Delegate Terry G. Kilgore (R) deltkilgore@house.state.va.us Delegate Clay Athey (R) delcathey@house.state.va.us Delegate Tim Hugo (R) delthugo@house.state.va.us Delegate Tom Merricks (R) deldmerricks@house.state.va.us Yours in Lionism, Lion Lee Talley Portsmouth DAC Center Children First Lions Club To learn more about Autism, visit the National Institute for Mental Health web site at: 15

16 Lions of Virginia from all over the state gathered for the annual Remote Area Medical health fair to help the less fortunate of Appalachia. This was the 9 th year we devoted our efforts to screen for sight and hearing defects, provide complete eye examinations and dispense prescription eye glasses to any in need. Elsewhere in the Fair Grounds the Virginia Dental Association was filling teeth, extracting teeth, and providing dentures. The University of Virginia was present as well providing medical care and diagnostic testing. Each year since the summer of 2000, Ken Lombart, owner of Lombart Instruments of Norfolk, has provided the Lions of MD24 with the vision testing equipment for the eye care pavilion at no cost. This amounts to 6 examination lanes of instruments with a value of over $126,000, and is entrusted to us with no strings attached. The Lions of Virginia can never thank him enough for his generosity. Of all the Lion from 24-D who attended, special thanks must go to Lion Roy Stockdill who has driven our Sight & Hearing Van to the RAM Project each of the nine years. Lions Nancy and John Cranford as well have worked with Lion Roy to see that all the borrowed equipment from Lombart Instruments, as well as the recycled eye glasses, are loaded in the van and transported safely to and from Wise. Left to right, International Director Lion Wayne Davis, Lion Clark Erickson, PDG Lion Hauser Weiler, PCC Together with the vans from 24A and 24C, 1152 vision and 1006 hearing screenings were done in two and a half days. The team of Lions from 24D is to be commended, once again, for their accurate and efficient patient screening many veterans of all 9 years of R.A.M. Dr. Vicki Weiss, in charge of vision section of RAM, and Stan Brock, CEO of RAM, at Wise County. An astonishing 1088 complete dilated eye exams were performed at R.A.M., by 7 ophthalmologists and 9 optometrists and optometry students in 2 ½ days. This was the most efficient year yet in the eye pavilion and we now have our protocol set for the future. From these examined patients, 1003 received glasses on site. Thirty of these actually got two pair. Those that could not be fit with new or recycled glasses were given vouchers to go to LensCrafters for new glasses. This was a successful year, again setting records. The piece on 60 Minutes this past winter on last years R.A.M. prompted a great deal of interest within the state and nation wide. The Governor of Virginia was there, as were several national networks and crews from Europe and Australia. The writer and producer of the program on 60 Minutes were there with their families and cameramen to work and write and film. This fall or winter there will be a follow-up program which should prove interesting. Those interested in R.A.M. 2009, the dates are July 24 th WISE, VIRGINIA JULY 25 27, 2008 Patients waiting for treatment at LAMP/RAM at wise county. through July 26 th.
