It was great seeing everyone at the September meeting. Thank you to the hostesses who provided wonderful food. Great job!! I want to welcome Helen Garland, our newest member. She is a friend of Cecilia. Once again the consignment sale was a success! I want to thank everyone who worked, great job! Julie, Vicki, and I couldn t have done it without all the hard work from club members. The girls on the committee, all of you did a fantastic job. The final revenue figure is still pending, but I hope Susan will have an estimated figure at the October meeting. It is time to gear up for the Chili Cook Off. This is a GREAT family event. If you are unable to work, please try to come!! Lots of fun for all. If you know anyone who would be interested in cooking, please contact Tammy Black. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. We will be collecting items for the local shelter. These items in need are tampons, pads, personal care items, gently used toys or books. Please bring as much as you can to the meeting. October is also Breast Cancer awareness month. Be sure to bring a stapler to the meeting to make reminder cards. Thanks Jessica and Cecilia October 2010
2 Conservation PAGE 2 Time to get those yards ready for the winter. It is time to start packing up the lawn furniture and lawn ornaments. There is mulching to do and leaves to rake. Don t forget to use those large brown paper bags to put your yard waste in. They will get mulched up with the leaves when they go to the landfill for recycling. Pull up the old flowers and weeds to prepare for a better jumpstart for the new flowers next year. This is the ideal time of year to plant a new tree and to seed the yard. Find a beautiful day to do this and enjoy all the beauty of the colors, and the wonderful smells of this season. Patti Jo Members on the Move Our members are gearing up for our Annual Chili Cook-Off this Sunday, October 17th. It is not too late to sign up to volunteer or cook! Our help is also needed for the Domestic Violence Vigil being held on Tuesday, October 19th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Our club has volunteered to supply refreshments. The vigil will be located at the Little Baker Chapel at McDaniel College. Please notify Babs Condon, if you are able to assist. All this service does not go unappreciated!! We have two fun evenings ahead... the Barter Dinner & our Holiday Party. Thank you to everyone for all of your continued hard work! There was no Membership Word of the Month, due to me missing the last meeting. Jesse Domestic Violence Vigil The Annual Domestic Violence Vigil is scheduled for Tuesday, October 19, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30ish, in Little Baker Chapel at McDaniel College. The expected attendance is 75. Our club is providing the refreshments. Set up is 5:30; the vigil starts at 6:00 and refreshments will be served around 7:30. Volunteers will be needed to serve 75 people. Please let me know if you can provide anything. Please put your name on the bottom of your plate, if you can t stay until the end. I will return them all the week after. Please deliver your refreshments to the chapel between 5:30 and 7pm. Be VERY quiet if you arrive after 6:00 the vigil is an emotionally moving experience, if you have never been to one and we don t want to interrupt any of the speakers. Thanks so much for your help! Babs
3 Public Affairs PAGE 3 Well ladies, by the time you receive this newsletter, it will officially be fall. What a wonderful time of year, especially in Carroll County. There are so many events at this time of year, you can barely fit them all in. One of those events is the Halloween Parade. It is scheduled for Tuesday, October 26th, at 7:00 p.m. We have the dubious honor of judging the talent that goes by. It is a really great time. If there is anyone that would like to join the women that have already signed up to help judge, please call me or me so I can add you to the list. We really have a great time. Don t forget that you must be there at 6:30 so we can get ourselves positioned, and to bring a pencil, clipboard, flashlight, chair, and to dress accordingly for the weather. If it rains, like last year, the parade will be called off. They usually make that decision by 5:30 p.m. at the latest. This only takes a little over an hour of your time. Thanks to all who have signed up already and I will contact you to remind you when it gets closer to the date. Also, I wanted to start reminding everyone that it is only one more month before we change time - November7 th to be exact. Start getting BC0106 ready for that drastic change. Not everyone adapts well to the lack of sunshine and really needs to mentally prepare for the change. Even your children get off schedule when the afternoons seem so short. Soak up all the sun that you can now, while it is still gorgeous out. Everyone, enjoy your autumn. Patti Jo A Time for GFWC Membership Building upon the previous ACT in OCTOBER campaign, GFWC is initiating a new nationwide membership recruitment campaign Three New Members is a Great Reason to Recruit This Season. As the year-long initiative unfolds, each of the four seasons will focus on a different theme with the goal of recruiting three new members per season. This means your club could end the year with 12 new members! Any club that reports three new members in a season will be recognized in GFWC Clubwoman Magazine. - from GFWC News & Notes, September 21, 2010
