3 From the President s Desk... Hi everyone, Another busy week as usual. The Primary School Speech Contest went really well and I was very impressed with how well it was organized. My thanks go to Michelle and Terry. Our guest speakers Corazon and Bruce Argyle entertained us with The Art of Speech. Last Thursday the club gave Di Moore a good farewell. The story of her contributions to the community were inspiring. Emma is settling in well and on Tuesday was invited by Alison Gommers to experience an evening with HICCI. Graeme Chester and Ian Tinney are currently in the process of enrolling Emma for Lady Somers Camp. On Monday the board met and covered a lot of ground. Thank you to all our board members for your contribution. The club s Public Relations Committee plays a very important role. The better our club looks to our community, the more new members we will attract. One way of doing this is by way of enhancing our club s activities via the media and focussing on more projects that meet the needs of the community, such as the issue of homelessness in the val- ley. The promotion of our club should always be in the context of Rotary s values of fellowship, integrity, ethics and diversity. I am happy to announce that Don Mc- Donald has agreed to be the chair of the Public Relations Committee. This is a great appointment as he has Rotary took the opportunity to extend thanks to long serving community member Di Moore as she prepares for shift to Ballarat a wealth of experience in this field. He will be joined by Don Fitzgerald, David Lau and Eckhard Wellner. This committee, like the Membership Committee before it, is now formalized. On a serious note, could members please take the time to check their outgoing address books and ensure they are up to date. Club communications can sometimes contain confidential subject matter and it is my duty to ensure that our communications only reach the intended recipients, to avoid potentially harmful or embarrassing situations from occurring. Your co-operation is appreciated. Our new membership applicants Lawrence Webb and Michael Hardinge have been enjoying the fellowship of our club meetings. Tonight Ronald Sanders, who is showing a very keen interest in joining Rotary, will be attending our meeting again. Please make him feel welcome. The club is holding a high tea for the wives/female members on Sunday 17 September. Please see the ad in the bulletin. Please note that there is a limit on numbers so if you would like to attend, please contact Michelle Shafran by 7 September. The meat tray raffle will be reviewed at the end of September. 4 Last week s meeting - August 10th President Sam Halim welcomed Di Moore, she is moving after 40 years working for and serving our community from Healesville to Ballarat to live with her family. Sam Halim recognised and honored her work: Di Moore was one of the founders of the Mountain Views, established many aid centers and was councilor since 1988, for Healesville and the Shire of Yarra Ranges until her retirement in 2005, but she continued as committee member of many local organisations. Sam presented a letter of appreciation and a gift from our Club. Thanks Di Moore, farewell and best wishes for the future with your family! We greeted Lawrence Webb the Rotarian from Castlemaine, who will become Club member in 2 weeks, also Michael Hardinge, a potential Club member. We did not have the French flag handy, but Emma de la Morinerie got a warm welcome too. She enjoys being here, playing footy and dining at Sam s. For getting new members into our Club a new membership committee has been formed with Ray Jarvis, Sam Halim, Michelle Shafran, Robert Chippindall, Terry Hill and Don Fitzgerald. Di Moore addressed our Club, expanding on many details of her service to the community of Healesville and her time as a councilor. Di expressed her joy having worked together with the people and the organisations in Healesville and the Shire of Yarra Ranges. This is a marvelous community to live in, but now she is looking forward to live with her family in Ballarat. Di appreciated our company, thanked the Club for the invitation and promised she will occasionally come back for visits to Healesville. Secretary Michelle Shafran: The Club is involved with the Primary Schools Speech Contest, the winners will be presented at the meeting on the 17 th August. Terry Hill - Youth: Our Club s aim, to establish and support a local female footy team is getting closer as Tony Luman, the president of the Footy Club committed to organise this next year. Guest Speakers Cora Zon and Bruce Argyle: The Art of Speech We welcomed our 2 guest speakers, who arrived in the meantime. Cora Zon is passionate about giving young people confidence and skills with public speaking. She let Bruce Argyle tell us about their involvement in the art of speech at Toast Masters who meet every fortnight Page 4 and the Art of Speech Festival which they are planning. They have a proposal for the Art of Speech Festival - planned for the weekend 6 th to 8 th April 2018 in Healesville at the Memo-Hall featuring public speaking with children, youth and adults covering poetry, story-time, soapbox, any debates and improvements of the art of speaking. An important opportunity is visualised for community groups and clubs to talk about the satisfaction to become a member. We have so many amazing clubs and groups here in Healesville. There will be workshops held about the making of speeches, all-day speech competitions and a dinner evening with comedians and famous speakers. A program will be made available. Zoe likes the Rotary motto Making a Difference and she is hoping that this festival is not only enhancing the art of speech, but also provides a communication platform for young and old people. Bruce concluded: We are very glad to have already some advisers, participants and helpers who make themselves available, but we would like to get you Rotarians involved as well. We are planning to advertise this event and also promote through Yarra Valley FM 99.1 from the 11 st September onwards during 6 pm and 7pm with a program called A Strange Business featuring the strangest people we can find in our area. Vote of Thanks Graeme Chester thanked Zoe and Bruce for informing us about this potential community event which is unique and will be well appreciated. This is a chance to learn moving back from typing into your handy towards talking to each one in person again. 5 Invitation to High Tea On Sunday 17th September, from pm, we are inviting Rotary s special angels to a high tea at Sanctuary House. This is a special invitation for our Rotary wives, as a way of saying thank you for your tireless support. Even if you do not attend any of the meetings we know that you are the backbone for our members and there would be no Rotary Club of Healesville without you. Tea will be served from 12.30pm in the Sanctuary House restaurant and there will be a special gift for every lady - your very own angel reading, personal to you, courtesy of the wonderful Teresita.
